Funky Deal: 16GB Samsung SSD for $18.99

for the Z68 SSD caching, you need at least 18.7GB of space

other software/hardware solutions, dunno?

Wow I did not know this. They have some really tight requirements for SSD caching I guess, not less than 18.7 which means 20GB, not more than 64GB. Only works on Z68, unfortunate and no wonder why it is not more popular.

Page file is disabled. I did some digging and 10 GB of usage is in a folder called "winsxs", which is apparently service pack and update install/uninstall crap. There's supposed to be a cleanup tool built into Win7 that I will try and report back.

EDIT: Got it from 10 GB down to 6.7 GB. Not bad, especially when you're using an SSD with limited space. Here's the information if anyone else wants to try it:

I realize this is somewhat off-topic but for anyone buying this it could be very useful.

Thanks for the info

I just bought one to use in my pfsense box. It currently has a noisy 40 gig drive in it that has been driving me crazy.

The question is, can you do this at install time? You wouldn't be able to do the full installation then prune it down to this on a small drive...

This would be nice in an external enclosure for storing drivers, app installs, maybe even a Win7 install disc.

Let me bring you up to speed. Based on what I've seen, this command only does something for you if you install the SP manually or through WU. If you installed Win7 with SP1 integrated, you get absolutely no disk space back.

Would this be useful for placing a single game on it? Such as Skyrim? Or would the speed increase be negligible over a modern 7200RPM HDD?

Edit: Never mind, I guess, as the listing has ended.

Yeah, that's probably true. Then again, with SP1 integrated the install is probably not as large, but I can't verify that.

As for the first question, I'm guessing you could install Win7 but probably not use Windows Update.

how good would these be for a small windows 7 install to do basically nothing but folding?

In for 4 will work great for ESXi 5.0 (SSD Caching as well as a OS Drive instead of USB)

Bought a 10 pack....3 for Shuttle machines running Untangle, 4 for my home media box OS drive, then 3 in my ESX and Xen boxes, 1 in the car for music!

you can get the free version off dreamsparks, or MSDN or MSDNAA, it is not bad 50$ per device license

no, what you thinking is Windows 7 Compact Edidtion, aka WinCE7

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/campaigns/compact7/default.aspx?WT.mc_id=van_c7

while Windows Embedded Standard 7 is base of same Win7 desktop....please do your googling first
I know exactly what it is. There is absolutely zero way for anyone to get Win7 Home shaved down to the size of Embedded so why even bring it up? It's not like someone could downloaded it and have the same functionality so it is completely irrelevant in this conversation. Thus my reason to question possibly trolling.

Downloaded and installed windows thin pc, 2.95gb used on disk, uses about 337mb at idle with all the visual doo-dads turned off. I got it in a VM running F@H. It is erily like a winixp install in terms of weight and system use. I am going to play with it more tomorrow and see if I can dump any services to get it smaller.

in for 2. One for my NAS box and the other for a boot drive for my ESX 5.0 server. I noticed these drives were made sometime in 2009 from the sellers screenshot. I hope the write speed is decent (like 40-60MB/s) and read speeds over 100 M/Bs

what do you mean? it is free for student and dev, or you can buy device license for 50$

jsut because you can't get it or dont know where to get it, does not means it is irrelevant, as other point it out it is idea for making Fold box, you can easily create a Win7 box for the specific purpose you need, if you read into Win embedded you will know cheap module can be disassemble even with standard desktop win7, there are alot of documentation on how to do that in MSDN

Just picked up a pair in the 2 for $35 auction.

I plan on replacing the 160GB 5400RPM laptop drive in my ESXi system with one, and then I'm not sure what I'll do with the second. Probably too slow to be useful as L2ARC.. either put it into an old laptop I've got to revive it as a small XP client or maybe save it for the bedroom HTPC. We'll see.

would I be capable of installing windows 7 on this or would I need to opt for a 32gb model to do that? Thinking for my next computer having the os on an ssd and everything else or an standard hdd

sweet, he added a 2 for $35 deal. that made me bite. gonna try pfsense and untangled with these.

He only has 5 drives left total in the singles auction. I just bought 2. Deal is almost dead.

And I just bought four. If anyone was waiting to buy one of these, I think that there is only one left. I emailed the seller about a deal for buying 4 at once and he said that he sold over 200 in the last couple of days.

I would not try to use this for a Windows 7 OS. Linux and Unix should be fine.

Not sure why you wouldn't use it for a win 7 install.

My win 7 Install on my HTPC is only 8.6 GB, with all the codecs, players, etc installed.

In for one, replacing the old 40GB PATA drive running my HTPC now. Hopefully this makes the menus in media browser much more responsive.
