Lately NASA has been providing some excellent night time imagery from space, which makes me wonder what they are up to. It must be time to petition Congress for a budget increase. :D In any case, we are receiving the benefits of their ongoing efforts. Check out the entire series, paying attention to the Northern Lights.

pretty cool how you can see all the oil rigs off the mouth off the Mississippi.

I always love these pictures of planet Earth during nighttime. Its interesting to see how the populations are distributed over the continents

Cool...I think I'll find a dark spot and move there, that way I can see the starts at night again.

While the pictures are nice, it also shows just how bad light pollution is. Some very cheap and simple adjustments could reduce that glow by probably half and still leave as much light on the ground where it is needed.

Actually some observatories have had to cut back on their research work because the skies near them have become too light polluted for their telescopes to be useful for certain types of work :(

Yeah, my 5 year old was absolutely amazed at how many stars there are when we took a trip to Carlsbad NM, coming from Houston, TX.

It's pretty sad when I remember growing up in Oklahoma and camping out at night under the stars in our backyard (lived in the country). Down here it feels more like camping out under a constant soft-glow...

Only in most areas. Check out North Korea. Pitch black there but they've got a large population too ;-)
