Commodore is bringing back the C64, sort of.

Its a C64 case (remake) with an Atom + ION 2 and 2gb of ram. It also includes a bluray drive, 1tb HDD, memory card reader and hdmi/DVI and wireless N.

It will come with Workbench OS 5. A linux based distro with an Amiga OS look and feel. It also features C64 and Amiga emulators.

They are also releasing PCs based on the Amiga 1000, 2000 and 3000. It seems you will be able to buy the case only.

No prices or realease date yet.

This comes up periodically and it's essentially old news.

This was announced about a couple of weeks ago.

I do like this better than the Amiga X1000 or the NatAmi. (which are completely different products)

Actually I've been waiting DECADES for something like this. I don't think I'd go for a C64, but the amiga 1000 and 3000 cases do look nice.

In the end it will depend on price and features/performance, but IMO it just might stand a chance.

Overestimated nostalgia I think. If they are even manufactured, which is really iffy, there's not a big market for these. It's a tiny niche product. That doesn't stop people who would want to buy these from enjoying it, but meh. Not interested.

FWIW, I have 2 original Commodore 64s with drives that work and a lot of software.

The horizontal case layout is way outdated.
they should just make towers.

Here is my Amiga 3000T that I'll hook up every couple of years and play some games on it for a day,

I forgot how tall that case was. I had an A4000T back in the day, that thing was huge.

it's also super heavy. this one was used for graphics and audio production.
68040@25mhz, 26MB Ram, Studio16 card and 2 SCSI drives.

Those stats sound awesome. Until you compare em to modern computers. Still that must have been the shiznit in its day.

Speaking of the Commodore 64, I have my Dad's old Commodore 64 in my bedroom closet. Never tested or tried it out though as I have nothing to hook it up to. Maybe that old TV thing that is well older than I am in my other closet?

I honestly really, really like the idea of the Pheonix, and I've been wondering why a product like that hasn't been out in the modern market place...however, the specs on it look dated and it lacks HDMI and DisplayPort...plus the fact you still can't actually buy them yet.

If they do release the Pheonix, with modern hardware and at least an HDMI port, I may very well pick one up...as long as its reasonably priced.

EDIT: This should really be moved to a more active board...all models are running Intel chips, why is this thread here?

This sounds like a complete waste of time and money to me. It is more likely someones insane hopeful wishes. What would be the point?

I miss my 500 and 2000 but not anywhere near enough to buy the new ones.

What I would like is to try a live cd version of their new workbench distro.

Good thing I stored all of my C64 games!

They can never truly bring the c64 back. I loved my c64 wish I had never sold it.

The most important part in all this is that it's a MECHANICAL KEYBOARD with cherry switches! At least they didn't cheap out on that and it will have a vintage feel.

Extremely nice.
Completely unjustifiable.
All great things come to an end.
Let "C=" R.I.P.

That's sort of like saying that building an X-arcade system to play old school arcade games is unjustifiable, though. I for one wouldn't mind a remade C64 just to reminisce, I miss alot of those games and it's hard to play certain ones on an emulator using a PC keyboard layout. This looks like it has a stock C64 layout for the built-in keyboard and you probably use a PS2/USB keyboard when using it like a PC.

i miss my amiga 500+. I literally had 300 games for that mofo.

dang i gotta find me some "quest games now"

and cannon fodder

I wish this post had been made back in late May. I had to get rid of stuff I wasn't using when I moved back in June, and I threw out a working C-128; 1571 drive; and a shitton of floppy disks. I would have gladly sent it your way for cost of shipping. Damn shame.

Remember "Blood Money"? I never owned an Amiga, but a family friend did and I spent hours playing that fucking game. I was so amazed by the opening intro with the "3D" asteroid field.

The funny thing is, I don't remember any C64 models having clicky keyboards. The later model VIC20s didn't, either. But my Dad and Uncle went halves on an original model VIC20 back when it first launched, and i'll be damned if that early model VIC didn't have a click style keyboard. I hated it because I used to sneak into the computer room to mess with it and type programs in without parental supervision (I was 5 or 6 at the time) and I always got caught because they keyboard made alot of noise. I'd have been golden if it had been the later model.

Even though it was a click keyboard, typing on it was a bit annoying because the keycaps didn't have any indentation at all, they were semi-glossy and absolutely flat.

I had one of the original C64's and had a ball learning how to program it.

they could at least bring back the A1000 keyboard, that thing was sweet to type on. friend had the A1000 which i couldnt afford so waited and got the cheaper A500 and that keyboard was junk.

What Noo! A piece of history lost! *cries*

I hear you bro. Sold both my NES and C128 and now I wish I didnt. :(

And about this new C64, this is basically a PC with linux installed and running C64 EMULATOR. It doesnt even have the SID chip for authentic sound, that is emulated on the emulator too.

I really fail to see the point. Just download C64 emulator and you are good to go.

I still have my Commodore64 is it worth anything?

Fully working with PSU and maybe even couple of games, its worth few ten bucks on ebay. (ignoring the prices set by resellers who try to push the value up by asking ridiculous prices)

C64 is completely obsolete, same as design. It was good back than, but that's all. Time to give up.
