Steve Jobs may be gone, but his legacy of patent infringement lawsuits lives on. The latest is against the Galaxy Nexus to ban the sale of the smartphone because it allegedly violates four Apple patents.

Apple's Steve Jobs thought Android was a knock-off of his company's iOS operating system and famously said Apple was "going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product.

Apple is just following their late founder's "dying wish" to destroy Android. :(

Either the US Patent Office is run buy a mass of frog-fish-squirrels with the combined intelligence of a 2x4....or they never even bother reading a patent before granting it.

Either way. The result is this BS. I should patent walking on 2 legs.

Anyone else remember the original Star Trek when Spock”s brain was stolen to run an entire world?

Screw Apple. They can't block my purchase, it's too late. If they want it so bad they can pry this awesome device from my cold dead hands.

Fun fact: The galaxy nexus actually has a 4.74" screen not the advertised 4.65". The screen is entirely taken up when watching movies.

Another reason why I don't purchase Apple products and never will.

Yep, one more reason, as if there needed to be another. I wish they would just stop. They obviously do not believe enough in their products to compete, they want a game where they are the only player because they know they can't win in a fair fight. And to think that they EVER complained that Microsoft was anti-competitive.

instead of compete,. act scared, and patent things that didnt exist at the time of a phones release, then sue....

Nah. They are voraciously defending what they view as their intellectual property. They are doing what every big billion-dollar level company does. Not that that makes it acceptable, mind you.

Their intellectual property? What are you talking about? They're coming up with patents that they submitted about technology that existed long before they even created a phone or submitted the patent, like the slide to unlock and the data completing patent. You can't toss on "on a touch screen device" to make a valid patent.

Huh, tap to call shouldn't be patentable since it is just the same thing that has existed on the computer world for years. I mean, i don't know about you guys, but my computer recognizes emails and phone numbers and gives the option to "activate them" (call/open a mail program), just by clicking them. The fact that it is now on a phone with a cpu instead of a standard desktop/laptop shouldn't matter at all.

Sure you can, as they did. They paid the USPTO for a patent...and the USPTO gladly rubber stamped it. You can patent a number, or a configuration of atoms. The blame in this isn't on Apple. It is on the USPTO for allowing these kind of BS patents, seemingly no questions asked, in the first place.

The "data tapping" feature, which, for example, lets users tap on a phone number in an e-mail to automatically make a phone call, got Android-handset maker HTC into hot water last year, when the International Trade Commission ruled the company had violated Apple's patent and said it would enforce a ban on HTC's products that use the feature. HTC quickly said it had developed a workaround.

The loss of cutting-edge features in a mobile device due to patent issues can, of course, hamper the device's competitiveness. It's possible however, for companies to devise workarounds that avoid legal problems but approximate desired functionalities.

Looks like they had the power to avoid this

This right here. Can't blame Crapple for gaming the system when the system is designed to be gamed. "I patent a phone that is square, but has rounded corners and is between 4 to 5 inches..." /patentgranted #failsauce isn't on Crapple it's on the antiquated patent laws.

The motion, Mueller says, is based on four patents: a "data tapping" patent, a patent involving Siri and unified search, a new slide-to-unlock patent, and a word-completion patent for touch-screen entry of text.

So basically Apple claims they have patents on parsing strings, voice search (which Android has been doing for years?), and word completion.

...what assholes.

The us patent office keeps itself afloat by with patent fees, so they basically have to accept every patent application if they want to survive... stupid i know.

Because the people buying the Galaxy nexus would have most certainly bought an iPhone if it didn't exist.........

Apple is losing market share and is trying to prevent that through any means necessary. They don't want to cater to a niche in the phone market like they do in the PC market.

They should invalidate all patents older than 10 years. Make them public domain and stop stifling ingenuity in favor of legalese.

Pretty much. This case is just stupefyingly ridiculous. Word completion/predictive text has been around for AEONS. My Nokia 6160 could do it and my first Sony Ericsson had it as well. Voice search? Even that is as old as dirt and it's been in Android for quite some time way before Siri to be sure. All of it has been done years before Apple even thought about it.

You know I hope all of those freaking patents are nullified and hope that someone investigates why on the few chances I went to Best Buy that all of the Android tablets were mysteriously out of stock.

wahh apple wants to rule the world, wahh sue sue sue whomever gets in their way..

:p

Only one thing comes to mind after reading this. Needless to say I just previously watched the trailer for "God Bless America"

Pretty funny considering that Apple stole the idea for its OS from Xerox .. and then Unix/Linux.

F U C K Apple.l I wish they would burn in hell for all these frivolous lawsuits.

Apple has turned into SCO. What a joke. Protecting IP is one thing, suing others to keep your market is bullshit.

I agree. People are so awestruck by this phone. Plus since i purchased it at costco i got the extended battery free!!!!!!

I think Apple may need to start taking a chill here or they may be headed for some major PR problems especially in context on their Foxconn problems. Apple doesn't need to look like another greedy uncaring corporation in today's environment.

(Rhetorical) I don't see how any can defend Apple, even the sometimes rightfully coined fan boys. This is beyond logic and just boggles the mind.

Well plenty do because many think that Apple's products are vastly superior than the competition. While I would say the iPad is a good better than the competition overall for now I don't think that's the case in phones. There are Android and even Windows Phones that every competitive with the iPhone. But the mantra of Apple gives it that special aura, that nothing is even close. That has a lot more to do with the price of Apple's stock the the their actual products.
