We are in need of a physical asset inventory control system.
We have the following requirements.

-We wish to track laptops, desktops, printers, etc.

-We need the ability to tag assets with specific custom attributes based off what account code they were purchased from. (title 1, Grant, Title 3, SPED, etc) This must correlate with a PO number that we can cross reference with the asset.

-The system must support the ability for an asset to be decommissioned and replaced by a new asset (serial number) while still maintaining a relational link to the old asset it replaced.

-We need the system to have native barcode support.

-The method by which we scan barcodes and keep track of assets needs to be wireless in nature. We require the scanners to be handheld and do not need to connect back to a PC. IE, when an asset is scanned it is transmitted realtime to the tracking software. (we have 100% wireless coverage so the scanners must be able to use our existing wireless networks)

-The software must support AD integration for user and permissions control.

-The software must use MS SQL as it's backend. Nothing rinky dink like Access or some proprietary database.

-We will only be tracking about 5,000 assets.

We are not sure of our budget at this point. We expect an enterprise solution to be costly, but we can't afford something like $100,000. We are thinking our ballpark is somewhere near $30,000 but that is not a hard number at all.
We routinely get audited and when we can't produce accurate assets reports we get fined so the goal is for the asset system to pay for itself eventually.

You stuck on MS Sql? Or will My SQL suffice?

I can think if one that would come close to all of those requirements. GLPI + OCS Inventory. Runs on Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP. We have it running inventory against about 75-80 machines and servers. Reports back a slew of information. I think you can customize information and attributes to meet your needs

We are not interested in Open Source solutions.
Nor anything that runs on Linux.

MS SQL is a requirement.

Track-IT doesn't seem to have real time inventory control.
We don't want something where we have to scan and then go dock a scanner with a PC and reconcile.

You could easily kill a couple stones with one using a Managed Service Provider type Remote Machine Management solution. I currently use GFI Max and can monitor the health, software licensing, full asset management, and have alerts in real-time when something happens to that machine be it a drive failure or what have you. Basically rolls out to $3 max per workstation OS and $15 max per server os. You can deploy the agent through simple active directory group policies so basically inside 24 - 48 hours you can have a full Asset Report, Vulnerability Report, Software license Report, and overall system health report.

PM me if you have further questions about it I can certainly provide you some sample asset reports.

We have web demos scheduled with 3 companies so far.

GigaTrack (limited AD integration, has SQL backend, has realtime scanning)
Track-IT (AD integration, SQL backend, does NOT have realtime scanning)
ASAP Systems (ad integration, SQL backend, realtime scanning)

So far before doing any demo's I am liking ASAP Systems. Their GUI looks nicer than the other 2 and they are the only ones so far to meet all 3 big requirements of ours.

spiceworks ticketing system can be used as an asset tracking system or you can be the hero and make a quick access database

I too am not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for or if it does everything you would like the program to do, but I know they customize their program for each client and are really workable and knowledgeable and customer friendly: CG4 Solutions: Asset and Inventory Tracking
