Mobo is a GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H

It had 2x2=4GB of DDR3 1600 memory (G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBNQ) and memory was running at default 1333 9-9-9-24 CR 1T

I added another 4GB kit of the same memory (total 8GB) and now it’s running at default 9-9-9-24 CR 2T

Is 2T normal or should I set it back to 1T in the BIOS?

I think thats normal. Its harder for it to do 1T with that much memory. This is one of the reasons some in the past preferred to have less memory. You can try setting it back, it wont hurt anything. Youll know if it is capable if it boots up and doesnt cause crashes.

Thank you. The 4GB kits (2 sticks only) will easily run CL 8 @ 1600. Is Gigabyte just being very conservative? How do you know if it's stable at 1T -- Memtest is enough?

I use a program called HCL Memtest. It runs inside Windows, but I found that it uncovers instabilities far quicker than Memtest86+.

Being conservative for minimal performance impacts while greatly improving stability is in the manufacturer's interests. 1t vs 2t timings have minimal effects in real life usage. Same with CL9 vs CL8.

I agree, performance improvement from CL8 vs 9 and 1T vs 2T are trivial.

Should I just crank up the speed from the mobo default of DDR3 1333 up to the memory modules’ max of 1600? Or is that trivial too? Somehow I doubt that Phenom II CPUs can really take advantage of memory speeds above 1333.

Probably true. However, if your RAM can run at 1600MHz, you may as well do it.
