OK, I want to know. The rules are: no price limit, top of the line, personal preference, (not specifically for gaming) just supreme quality daily home/office use: GFX Artist-writing-Website Owner-Downloading- some gaming-music-video editing-etc/etc..

Code:
1.Best Power Supply and cost:

2.A 2nd quality Power Supply at a lower cost:

I dunno about you guys but I LOVE my Silverstone ST60F-P - apart from the rattle the fan had when it was new. I guess I broke it in? Silent, completely modular, 1x 8pin pci-e and 5x 6 pin pci-e, you can power any two GPU's that need 2x 6 pin connectors and still have two spare PCI-E connectors. Minor con: no rear power switch.

It's a pretty good PSU, but by no means a candidate for top of the line.

That was great input, whether it was "top-of-line name brand", in his experience it best fits his needs which is top of line for him; regarding #2. ;)

Great, now I know which Power Supply I'll want.

Corsair AX1200, HX1000 (older version)
Nope.

@OP, the Seasonic Platinum units and the SuperFlower/Kingwin Platinum units(as stated already) are up there with the HCP 1200 which is still the best.. pretty much everything else currently available is inferior(to various degrees).

Thanks point taken. Right now I'm just oggling the motherboard I posted about in another thread. And now I'm going to do the same thing with the power supply.

Probably starting with this one

Seasonic Platinum-1000 or Kingwin Lazer Platinum 1000W.

And then moving down the list.

860 plat
1000 plat(also used in the xfx 1000 plat)

zippy emacs

enermax

the revolution galaxy 850/1050/1250

super flower

golden king 550 and 1000

m750d and m850d(used in the xfx 750 and 850 modular series)
They still are. It is now the XFX PRO850w XXX edition and I feel this is a Powersupply to consider in your list. Great quality for the price and is very stable when delivering power to the componets (little Ripple)

3 in particular stand out for me.
  • PC Power & Cooling 1kw SR
  • Thermaltake ToughPower 1200Watt
  • Corsair HX1000

I'm still nostalgic about my PCP&C 510 Turbo I had custom built for me with adjustable pots on each line.

That frigging thing ran my PC (which was a phase change on the CPU, watercooled GPU's SLI beast) for four years, then was put into service running 24/7 server for a business for another two, and used in an exchange server until last year. It was still working great when the server was decommissioned. It was a totally awesome psu.

My Zippy 700w was pretty awesome as well.

It's not 2008 y'know ;)

I realize this. But I haven't needed to purchase a PSU in a very long time. I know the AX1200 is pretty good, Paul liked the Thermaltake ToughPower 1500watt he just reviewed, etc. But I have no experience with these myself.

What makes a power supply "the best"? Doesn't it depend on your specific needs?

I don't think you'll find anything as robust as some of the units from the PCP&C glory days were(TurboCool, Zippy Emacs, some Seventeam units, etc).. but current high ends offer far better electrical performance, efficiency, connectivity and they're generally a lot quieter;)

Of course platinum certified offerings as of late have been exceptionally good PSU's....so when I think of all time best, I am thinking of power supplies that had a loyal following of hardcore users, and had a solid reputation. Because chances are, none of the power supplies from yesteryear can really hold a candle to something like the Seasonic 1000w platinum.

So, with that in mind, I think the unit that had the best "rep" back in the day....and was most often recommended was the PC Power and Cooling Turbo 510. Everyone wanted one...hell, I wanted one. I think if you look back at all the PSU's...that unit alone had more hardcore users then anything else. Of course the brand has since gone to shit, but the Turbo 510 will always live on as one tough beast.

Other PSU's of note:
The original Corsair HX series is what built the PSU brand for Corsair, and that's when everyone and their mother started buying Corsair PSU's.
The Seasonic S-12 series was also good because it was amazingly quiet, especially during a time when most PSU's were amazingly loud. This was around the time that 80 plus popped onto the scene...I remember getting my S-12 520 and being amazed at how quiet it was (and efficient :p).

And a few years before either of the above, I remember the Antec True Control PSU's were often highly regarded...that is before their redesigned version had the fan recessed too far in the grill and couldn't cool itself. They also had a bout of terrible capacitors in some of their True Power series. But I still remember seeing the True Control 550w PSU's and thinking they were badass...especially the little bay adapter with the voltage control!

Yea! I've got a Seasonic S12 and feel it's the best PSU i've ever owned.

I've kept looking for any reason to upgrade to a Seasonic Platinum-1000 but my Antec SG-850 Signature has just been bulletproof since the day I bought it.

It wouldn't be much of an upgrade.. better efficiency but worst output quality than your SG 850 offers ;)

PC Power & Cooling 1 Kilowatt if you can handle the noise.

PCP&C Silencer 750 runner up (i've ran at least 6 of these total. several at fairly high load without a hiccup)

My vote goes to Corsair 1200. I'm running on an SR-2 board and used up almost every connection available to get my system going and I can't be any happier with the results. Look at my sig and look at the required connections on the board and you'll understand why. Triple 580's, 6 HDD's, and a motherboard that requires 2 x 8 pin connections.

I'm at the point right now where I'll avoid PC P&C. They're a part of OCZ and every OCZ product I've ever owned broke after a few years.

I thought this was about the all time best? Not those that are technically the best right now. For their day, those were all excellent units. Nothing today would be as awesome to me because it hasn't offered years of faithful service under the most difficult conditions.

HX1000 has been holding up great. I've gone through 3 systems with this PSU, multiple power surges (I live in South Florida so it's extremely common) SLI, Tri-SLI, CrossFire, CrossFire 5870s + GTX 275 for PhysX, i7 920 stressed to 4.2ghz. 8 HDDs, 2 disc drives, water cooling. This PSU is just amazing for anything I need it to do.

y'know, the OP asked "All time best" :D

If you read the OP and not only the title you might find out he's looking to maybe buy a PSU, listing also its intended use... though, nothing stops you from going back to the industrial revolution or maybe the recently discovered DC ceramic batteries of Ancient Egypt... at least you're not spamming the classic "I have a Corsair xxx unit that's been running Russia's North Atlantic commercial fleet for half a decade and it's still going strong" ;)

The best PSUs are the ones that do exactly what you want them to do and work so well you never even think about them once they're installed.

If a PSU works right, you should be able to completely forget about it until it comes time to build a new system in a few years.

And it should have a tiny Corsair logo on the fan. :D

YES, FINALLY, instead of stamped into the metal using big fat letters like on your cases, then just have a tiny logo somewhere, like on the back of the case :D

I really like that idea RedBeard, now go tell your colleagues :)

I couldn't agree more on the first part. On that last part, I sense some bias. :p

I have the PC Power and Cooling 1KW Quad SLI. The multiple rails haven't caused any problems. Very clean power, almost no ripple. Compare the reviews. Better then the AX1200 and Seasonic Platinum 1000 in that respect. But it was much more expensive, not modular etc.

My new build is going to use the Corsair AX1200 built buy Flextronics I think. The design of the AX1200 looks more robust then the Seasonic. The only negative about the AX1200 is the +5VSB drops to ATX specs when pushed to the limit but stays steady up till then, meaning I will never have that problem.

There are plenty of shitty PSUs that fit that description.

It's a push with the in ripple/noise versus the Seasonic but much worse voltage regulation, and efficiency. Not to mention, noisy as hell. ;)
