[Newegg] Radeon 7950's are out

1. matches or betters the gtx 580
2. matches gtx 580 price point
3. uses less energy
4. runs cooler
5. 3gb of ram and yes this will matter

i dont see what the butt hurt is all about. gotta pay to play. go big or go home. there are still plenty of products out there in the mid range for mid range $$.

actually 3GB doesn't matter, 1.5 is plenty for any game out there right now, look at the results on 2560X1600 (which is the only resolution where it matters anyway, you don't need more than 1GB on resolutions lower than that). The only thing 3GB might matter for is 3 monitors but not many use that setup.

so a year later, same price, same performance (maybe a little better in some games), no that is not a good deal! See technology has always had the same trend: price can stay the same (or even go up a little) if there are big performance increases or features, otherwise price needs to DROP. Look at CPU chips for example, or Monitors and TVs or phones, why should GPUs be any different?

What I think needs to happen is a third competitor needs to start making GPUs, Intel? Apple? Samsung? anyone? we need it like we need a third party to run for President :D

a year later their Second fastest single gpu is as fast or faster than the competitors fastest single gpu.

you forgot "no pain no gain"

and if you've had the misfortune like I have of dealing ATI/AMD drivers when a new game comes out, followed by 6 months of buggy betas before AMD finally pulls their head out with a stable release, you too would be butthurt. but i've learned my lesson and now I stay away, far far away strictly because of the drivers. and if tests are showing that AMD can't even beat NVIDIA at a particular performance/pricepoint with a new gen card then that's pretty sad since it buys NVIDIA even more time to tweak their Fermi SKU's.

I think they're just maximizing profit before Kepler.
They may be maximizing profit per card sold, but they are hurting themselves by not undercutting the GTX 580 by $50 or more. Right now its a no brainer to get the mature card with better driver support for the same cost or $25 more unless you have a raging hardon for AMD.

Like I said.. they are undercutting the 580 3GB by $100. When the 7950 1.5 GB comes out it'll undercut the 580 1.5 by $100.

Obviously you didn't get the memo. I'm rocking 480 SLI, playing Clear Sky Complete and my framebuffer is averaging 1450 MB...sometimes going over 1500 MB. And I play 1920 x 1080. BF3 is about the same.

3 GB is a must for BF3...and i'm sure for other games coming up.

Well, there are other advantages to the 7950 over the 580... it consumes less power, runs quieter, and runs cooler. But yes, I agree... nVidia driver support makes up for all of that.

They are running a business here, not catering to Joe Gamer's newspaper route budget. Both companies wisely stopped engaging in price wars many, many years ago.

The prices don't surprise me. I mean, obviously the prices are a lot higher than I would like to see, but I don't blame them. Until demand drops.......

I think the problem isn't high demand but rather too low demand. If video card demand was high we wouldn't see HD4000 and GTX400 series cards still in stock.

Video cards are not that popular and that is why pricing is so high IMO. If everybody bought a video card I'm sure the pricing would be much lower.

NVIDIA hasn't been making money for awhile now and I think that is why they are focusing on getting into the mobile device world. In order to make money NVIDIA needs to sell a product in MASS quantities. Everybody has a mobile device now a days.

Well if you want people to upgrade a system, you make it worth while to them not only on a performance stand point, but with their wallets too. Right now it's almost not worth it to upgrade to those cards, when last generations CF/SLi cards that are cheaper in pairs out does them. Sure CF/Sli might have some issues with drivers and what not, but a single 6970 is getting the job done just fine and considerably cheaper.

If I was in the market for a new gaming system, it would be a 6970 setup w/ 2500k.

Also one must take into consideration all the hot deals on used or refurbished video cards.

This is very true and it's usually done by both companies to maximize profits. While there's some fans who are AMD/ATI and others who are NVIDIA and others who don't care either way... the CEOs are sitting side-by-side in their luxury recliners with a trophy girlfriend on each arm of the chair deciding together whether they want to be nice or cruel to the gamers or make a decision to maximize profits.
