Millions Caught Up in Android Botnet

Those retards need the walled garden. Those are the same kind of people that have virus infested PCs. Then again there are plenty of people not dumb enough to download crap like NAKED WOMEN SOLITAIRE,

Then again, maybe they think the tradeoff is worth it. In the walled garden, there is no choice at all (appl doesn't allow such things).

So now it's apple vs android...instead of how to get rid of the malware.

Hey you apple folks...your talk wont make any difference. Android will overtake the tablet and phone market and apple will do nothing but cry and hire lawyers to sue the manufacturers. It's just the way it is.

Someone missed all the Apple sales records articles.

I think Verizon is taking a hard stance on not adopting WP7 and putting them on their shelves. I'd just get an unlocked phone since ... You know ... Us being [H] and willing to spend hundreds of dollars on video cards and such...
Verizon is supposedly getting the Nokia Lumia 710 at some point in the not-too-distant future.

T-Mobile payed Nokia a nice chunk of change to get an exclusive on the Lumia 710's launch. Once their exclusivity deal is up, Verizon can start selling it too.

I'll be sitting over here in the malware free zone then...

So I take it you don't have a smartphone then? And I guess your only computer is a Chromebook?

Someone missed all the Apple sales records articles.

You mean the ones where Apple continues to lose market share against Android and isn't catching up? :p

Millions of Android users contract a trojan -- which as others in this thread have pointed out, is representative of their intelligence.

And people in this very thread continue to think this is malware when in reality it isn't. Symantic is retarded. This is an ad network, not a botnet. http://blog.mylookout.com/blog/2012...the-‘apperhand’-sdk-aka-android-counterclank/

Google doesn't have walled garden, just a bunch of cleaner guys who go out when some dog pees on the walkway.

Android Market on other side is not reviewed and malicious apps are removed after they are reported. The whole process of getting app on market is pretty much this - sign up, pay the fee, upload your apk file together with the app/new revision info and it's available (sometimes it takes few hours to go through all the caching and search to pick it up). Cost to the developer is a one-time $25 fee.

Google doesn't have a review process, true, but they *do* have more than just a bunch of "cleaner guys". Malware in the Android Marketplace is incredibly rare - which isn't a coincidence. And a person looking at the app doesn't reduce the chances of the app having malware - it's not like Apple has a bunch of engineers decompiling and inspecting every app that gets submitted. It's just a bunch of random call-center level employees running through a checklist. If you think Apple or Microsoft's approach means their respective stores are malware free and always will be, you are incredibly stupid (and forgetful, as Apple's app store has already had malware)

Wait, I'm confused... this malware is on the official Google marketplace, which means it's inside Google's own walled garden.

This isn't an open platform vs. closed platform issue, it's a marketplace vetting issue.

This.

It's one thing if you download pirated .apk's from some shady website.. but this is inside the walled garden of the official Android Market.

I posted the same link in post #4 in this thread and nobody other than you might have noticed. It's not a big enough headline to cause controversy like the Symantec one ;). So don't expect them to bother with yours either, lol.

That walled garden of apple's isn't looking so bad now, is it?

Just because people are retarded and make terrible choices, doesn't make the removal of choice look better. If anything this exemplifies why people need to actually "Learn" something about how to use their technology instead of continuing to exist as the "average idiot user". Eventually even "walled garden's" will be compromised and those who relied on big brother to protect them instead of knowing how to protect themselves will be the ones who really get screwed.

This.

Please remember, it's an open source licensed market. To be expected, no worse than installing non-microsoft produced software on windows.

Has anyone noticed the elitism has shifted from people that use iOS to people that use Android?

"I'm better than you because I have an Android! It means I can have widgets!!!"

No? Just checking.

Holy shit, the Android defenders are as bad as the Apple defenders they complain about.

Welp, live and let live I always say. Enjoy running out of bandwidth every month because some of you guys can't get your head around the fact that all platforms need to be secured these days.

Even Microsoft finally figured it out and locked down Vista and 7. Google's version fragmentation and their hands-off approach when they, of all companies, should know that the internet is very unsafe and unsecured will be the cause of their inevitable demise some years down the road. Quite a few GenMay'ers are disenchanted with Android already.

I really hope WP7 and soon WP8 gain some more grounds soon and compete side by side with iPhones.

I have noticed.
I wonder if the same people that give the Android Market a pass for not adequately policing the malware in free apps, would also give Origin or Steam a pass if malware was found to be in a free to play game containing malware?

I currently still prefer Android over iOS, and WinMo but I have a feeling Win8 mobile will change that. The lack of apps, and until recently, any phones I wanted to own, kept me away from older versions of WinMo. I want something equivalent to my Galaxy Note on WinMo.

I'm going to go with no.

I take it you still haven't realized this isn't malware, then?

I could say the same about those who insist on blaming Android for things that haven't happened. The original article is flat out wrong, but you are more than happy to take it as an excuse to attack Android. Even worse, when people point out that the original article is wrong, you slam them as "Android defenders" and say they are worse than the "Apple defenders they complain about".

How about you start basing your criticisms in reality with facts instead of a fantasy land that only exists in your head?

I take it you still haven't realized this isn't malware, then?

This time, the fact that it was adware and not true malware is meaningless to my point. Don't get me wrong I am not bashing Android or Google. My Glaxy S was great, so was my Infuse, and I am really digging my Galaxy Note.
Just making a point about certain blind defenders. The ones that instantly jumped to Androids defense, not with "this is adware, not spyware", but with "FREEEEEDOM", or iOS hate. Which is odd, because I am an Apple hater. Well, I would not really say a "hater", but more of a "dismisser".

Some them are yes, however blaming android for a "user" problem makes this article a bit laughable.

Root, Mod and practice safe downloading (you know that thing you should be doing on your PC) and you have just as much if not more security then Apple or MS's offerings. Honestly these people that just go out and download some of the incredibly stupid crap they do (see the stuff in this article) are just as bad as people who go out and get a $10 hooker off the street then wonder how they got an STD.

I find it funny how people are feeling smug about being in their "apple garden of eden" after reading this. It's like the Amish feeling smug about being in their little town after hearing about a plane crash or dot com bubble burst. I think I will now refer to Isheep as the digital Amish.

Your analogy doesn't work. You're comparing visiting rogue websites and shady random download locations to using a centralized app store.

I would like to think the centralized app store has a higher degree of security than downloading apps from freeappsandpr0n.net.

One would think that, but it wasn't how the mac is bettorz because its safer started.

Its still based on security through obscurity for OSX. If the market share was 90% they would have gone through the same pains that the windows environment did/does.

MS is the best a patching, and offering free tools for av.
