i just recently got a new 64gb torx2 from them for $64 shipped. So i guess this is an ok deal if you aren't afraid of refurbs

Shipping was $9.38 for me and was a deal breaker. Good deal if you can get cheaper shipping though

I kinda want to get a bunch of these and put them in RAID 5...

Just means they're being discontinued.

They were probably discontinued a year or so ago actually. I'm sure thats why they are selling off the drives that they had in case of rmas. I think that its a good deal for something that you surf the web with but thats about it. I wouldn't go putting a bunch of these in a raid array.

Honestly, I think you'd be fine if you put them in raid.

Why would you? Small ssds are generally quite a bit slower than a larger model. So a 128GB Patrot Torx which is quite a bit faster than these 32GB drives to begin with is also quite a bit slower than something like a new drive like a 120GB Crucial M4. So you're going to be buying five or six of these to maybe match the speed of a new drive. Its going to cost you the same and take up a bunch of sata ports. Then to make things worse the drives in raid won't have any trim support so they are going to have to rely on garbage collection alone which I have my doubts about. On top of all of that there is reliability. Five or six refurbished second gen SSDs are going to have a higher chance of failure than a single new SSD.

Like I said I can't think of one good reason to throw these in raid. Its a good drive to throw in a netbook or laptop to surf the web with, thats about it.

Two of these drives for $60 + shipping (let's call it $70) will take up all of 2 SATA ports and offer 64 GBs of storage. That is enough space for an OS install. The cheapest SATA 3 SSD on Newegg as of this writing was the M4 at $105. The M4 in benches is going to be much faster, but for a normal OS drive for a typical user a 2nd Gen SSD is going to provide a noticeable difference over a mechanical drive. The $35 in added speed that the M4 would provide over two of these in RAID 0 probably would not be noticeable to most users in their typical day to day activities. I personally would spend the extra money because OCZ sucks balls as a company and I don't trust their new products, but for a non crucial OS drive the price is very good.

im just looking for a drive to install windows and maybe a couple games to. wont be any big games sine its an htpc/server running a 5570. maybe 1gb installs max. i think last i checked a brand new win 7 install took about 23GB? i dont have a lot of other programs other than steam, vlc, utorrent, etc on this box. it can be very slow at times due to the use of a 5400rpm drive for OS (on a 100GB partition, rest is data). i have 3x2TB and 1x3TB in there using all 4 sata ports so i think i'll have to take one out to put in an os drive. :/

think this drive is big enough or should i look for a 60gb? other option is to use the 160gb 7200rpm drive from my gaming rig and get a new 120-256gb drive for that computer, but those are still so expensive...

Just to weigh in on how good of a deal this is...

I bought the Torqx 2 64GB for $80 (-$25 MIR = $55) from newegg over the weekend. They're now out of stock...but something to consider if you were thinking about getting the 64GB one.

The 32GB one seems like a pretty solid deal though.

I bit, $34 shipped. I did mine with Priority Mail. Thanks op. This would be nice as a boot drive.

Without a page file and hibernation I think that a Windows 7 install is actually under 10GB. I'm not recommending that you disable the page file but you could always limit its size or move it to the HDD. You just have to keep in mind that this is one of those drives that you don't want to fill up all the way. Still I ran a Windows 7 install on a 30GB drive for a while, its enough.

yeah 23GB could be way off, maybe i was thinking 13. i know i couldnt do it for my gaming rig with all sorts of programs and a few ~10GB games, but i think it would do for the htpc. ill have to think about it. thanks for posting this. :)

EDIT: uh oh, just made front page on SD so get em while you can. will be dead soon. OP why do you think the 64GB for $54 is not as good of a deal?

You can get a 120GB SATA3 drive for $120 AR these days...the whole point of this deal is that its not much money for a drive just big enough to boot a computer, which sometimes is all you need.

ah gotcha. yeah i think thats what im gonna do for my htpc/server. i'll find a bigger one for my gaming rig later when theyre a little cheaper and i feel i really need it. its just running my fileserver on a 5400rpm drive is getting a little aggravating.

Because its a refurb and you can find newer 60-64GB drives like the Agility 3 for around $70, sometimes less after rebate.

Then there is this.

this would be a decent drive for z68 caching action... very cheap. definitely flash to the v3 fw if it ships with an earlier one. 4k performance is still pretty bad.. but for the price I reckon it's ok.

wouldn't even use 4k blocks. Now a days I only format either 8k or 16k.

ok, I bit. for $33.71 shipped, it's hard to pass up a drive that could possible speed up my everyday tasks.

I was also considering this for a z68 ssd caching. Anyone else's thoughts? or about ssd caching in general?

What about using these as an SSD cache on a Z68 system?

Just last night I was bitching about how I really need to replace the old 120GB and 80GB drives in each of my two media PC's. Both sittings are sitting at about 20GB used on the C: drive. These will be perfect, bit on two for $63.34 shipped! Under $1 a gig is right where I want to be, thanks OP!

Tempting... since I only live 10mins from directron.... but I think 32GB is too small for everything I need it for....

Yeh, I am going to try it for a Z68 SSD caching since it really only needs 20 gb ssd drive for that.... I had a OCZ Vertex 60gb that quit on me after a few days (they are junk!). I hope this works just fine for this caching.. Hard to pass up for that price, even if it fails after 6 months, it was worth the 34.00 for that small time...

Where is Directron anyways? I noticed I had to pay sales tax (10%!) in Texas so they must be close.

They are in Houston. Texas is gigantic, I don't think their presence there automatically means they are close ;)

Thanks OP - I picked up 2. (63.34 shipped priority)

Going to try and talk the GF into letting me install one in her laptop and then replace the small drive in my media center.

i bit. for 30 bux man itll be alot of fun to play with. hopefully itll be reliable

Drive is suppose to be here today via UPS.. (1 day shipping ... not bad).. I will hook it up and see what it does.....
