hi all i am trying to daisychain 2 procurve 1810g 8 port switches
i got the cable i need to connect them but i just want to know what kind of settings i have to change on the switches to have it run as best as it can.

None? Just use a straight-through cable and it should work without any config.

It'll work fine as long as the default settings are on the switch. I have one of them at home.

connecting two switches together for normal use requires nothing special. Just connect them and away they go. you only have to worry about settings when you want to set up vlans, priority or stuff like that. but for normal single network switching there is nothing to configure for switches.

Technically you would use an x-over cable but most modern (gigabit) switches support auto MDIX so the switch is doing the work for you. But it's still important to know what's going on behind the scenes.

"Technically" you would not use a crossover cable if both devices support MDI-X. In fact, some GigE devices will drop down to 100 meg if you do.

You would only use one if the devices had trouble handshaking at GigE with MDI-X.

All gigabit should auto MDI-X...it's part of the gigabit standard. Crossover cables have become extinct..gone the way of the ISA bus, 9 pin serial port, and floppy drive....followed the dodo bird.

Most ProCurve models pickup an IP for their web admin interface from DHCP by default...so an IP conflict should not be an issue.

if you are running multiple vlans, you will want to tag all of them on the ports you are using to connect to each other.

example - you are using vlans 1,2,3,4,5
you are linking port 8 on both switches

SWITCH1 - on port 8, tag vlans 1,2,3,4,5
SWITCH2 - on port 8, tag vlans 1,2,3,4,5

if you are only using the default vlan 1 and you haven't really made any other changes, you can just hook up a crossover cable (or straight through if you must) to port 8 on both switches and it should work just fine assuming you have a different IP address set for VLAN 1 on each switch

I had a client who decided to install their own HP switches. Called me saying they didn't work - all I had to do was assign IPs. I believe these were from the 1800g series - too.

I knew they were gigabit, that's why I said a regular straight-through ;)

thanks for help guys
just to make sure i can get a regular cat6 ethernet cable to connect the switches and get full gigabit speed correct?

You can even save money and get cat5e or most cat5 and it'll still do full gigabit. I have two 1800 series 8 ports daisy chained myself. Had I known more about them when I bought them, I would have spent a little more for a better switch.

what other switch is better then the 1800?
