7970 Purchasing Thread

Bought mine at Frys locally. Ate the tax though :/ But it was only $2 more than Neweggs price on the Asus. They only had 2 arrive at the store too! The store manager was like, we cant sell it to him they arent released yet. My wife is pregnant, and well, she snapped on his ass hahahhahaha.

Temps are great actually. 55% fanspeed and they were maxing about 65c.

Amazon adjusted their price for me as well, thanks for the heads up! :-D although in the email they made it seem like they were doing me a big favor since it is not their policy to do so :/ and only did it bc it hadn't shipped yet

Looks like Newegg only has the Diamond cards still available. I see they have a 5 year warranty. Is it worth it to pick one up at this point or just wait for one of the bigger name brands to come back in stock? I know it's a reference card and that it shouldn't matter....but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Diamonds are in stock @ Newegg for 560usd.

Of course that will likely change soon. I bought a Diamond for my AMD rig. I'll let
you all know if it sucks. It really shouldn't as the difference between ref cards usually
= the sticker. Well, and warranty.

EDIT: Yep Diamond has a 5 year warranty on the 7970. I won't be
keeping the card that long.

Make sure you register your card or they will stick you with a one year warranty.

You've 30 days to do the above.

i wouldn't worry about it. in 5 years these will be dinosaurs anyway.

I ordered mine about 24 hours ago and still haven't gotten a shipping notice. Wasted the rush order 3.99 or whatever it cost. It took them seconds to charge my account too. :(

Amazon shipped mine too :D going to catch up on my sleep tonight so that I can game tomorrow night :D

Looks like my Asus is topping out at 1244mhz core, 1732 memory (although memory MIGHT go more, core is tapped) at 1.3v (actually backed off core a bit to ensure stability).

Fan speed, sir? :) Thanks for the report.

Yeah, he posted a lower-volt one of around 1200 before that looked interesting also but never reported back when asked on fan speed :(, would love to know.

What are you guys waiting for?! For your 7970 to actually arrive?

List your old cards in the FS section so I can buy your nasty outdated 6970s :p

i think my MSI Hawk 460's are going on CL first. i've had good luck with CL and getting good offers for hardware.

Sorry, fanspeed at 1.3v 1244mhz core was 60% and 65c while playing BF3. I have it on an auto profile. 1200mhz clock was at 55% 60c

This 7970 reference cooler is MUCH better than the 6970. Night and day actually. At 1.3v, I had to run 100% just to keep it at 80c.

Ya, in five years these cards will be like Voodoo 3DFX to us now. Slow ancient POS's.

Everyone will be running around with HD 11970's and GTX 1080's.

I might have a 6990 up soon.

Good news for those of us that will have to fall back on to one card when the crossfire stuttering ruins everything. :)

Ordered yesterday at 4 PM and still no ship notification from Newegg. I figured I call them, but nope, they close their phone lines at 5:30 PST.

Let's just say I'm used to dealing with Amazon.

I gotta hand it to AMD, there is STILL stock of 7970's on most big sites, even after a few quick sell outs, and on CES & product launch day to boot.

Well done ATI/AMD.

newegg is awesome, ordered at ~2pm pst and I got my tracking number at 5:15 :D

wth =(

I'm in the same situation as the guy quoted below. ordered yesterday via credit card, paid for rush shipping, they charged immediately, and my status has been "charged" ever since.

I wonder what time the warehouse stops shipping each day...

I've got an XFX Black Edition that I'm expecting to be available for pickup at my retailer of choice tomorrow. Can't wait to see how it will OC and what sort of noise profile it has being it is non reference cooling.

Yes! Tigerdirect! Hell yea! I just ordered one I hope it ships! I get 4% cash back on it with my chase card! woo and its in stock.

Picked up one of the sapphires that popped back into stock tonight. I would have paid the extra $10 for the diamond, but I couldn't verify what adapters came with that card. The sapphire however comes with EVERYTHING.

Yeah I ordered mine yesterday as well and Newegg usually ships in one business day.

This is a little unusual. Hopefully I won't get an email saying that my order has been cancelled because the stock is gone.

I'm gonna call them in the morning if I've got time.

What does the status say on your Newegg account? Charged? Does it say where it is shipping from? It usually says that before it is shipped. If it is TN, I've had stuff ship from there in the past that never updated from 'Charged'. I bet it shipped just fine but still you would like a piece of mind.

I just bought a diamond 7970, probably too expensive, but I need to spoil myself on occasion :p

I had a xfx 6970, but returned it due to the whole using cheap components thing. Have been using my xfx 9800gtx in the mean time, but bf3 has black triangles all over the place. (I started talking to xfx support to see if they would rma it, so far they have been going in circles with me since last month. -- The last email they asked for the temps of the card after giving that info to them weeks ago

XFX is not what it used to be, supposedly the 7970 non black edition doesnt have a lifetime warranty.

Mine JUST updated to shipped, 26 hours after being being charged. No tracking number yet, probably get one soon.

hell yea, mine just changed to "shipped" also!

same as in no tracking number or email, but i can be satisfied for right now.

From what I've been reading, you're right in saying XFX isn't what is used to be (warranty-wise). This is what I found on the xfx website:

The following Graphics Cards are eligible for an extension of the standard two-year limited hardware warranty:

1. XFX Radeon HD 7000 Series Dual Fan (Double Dissipation Edition) Graphics Cards with Ghost Technology; a floating cover design that maximizes airflow by creating exceptional venting throughout the card.

2. XFX Radeon HD 7000 Series Graphics Cards with 10-digit model numbers ending in “R” (example: “FX-797A-TDFR”)

So it seems the XFX 7970 models with the dual fan design are covered by a lifetime warranty, but it seems that the transferability of the lifetime warranty no longer applies...
