Microsoft has a promo code for upgrading a TechNet Standard subscription to Professional for 15% off. In order for the code to work, you'll need to be a TechNet Flash subscriber. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/abouttn/subscriptions/flash_register.mspx

Code: TNFLA12
Subscription page: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/buy/hh442910.aspx

Microsoft said:
From now until February 29th, 2012 Microsoft TechNet Flash subscribers will receive a 15% discount on a new Microsoft® TechNet Subscriptions Professional (the “Offer”):
  • The Offer is available to Microsoft TechNet Flash subscribers only. Each individual acquiring a subscription in connection with the Offer (the “Subscriber”) is responsible for all related taxes.
  • The Offer is valid only for a new twelve (12) month subscription to TechNet Subscriptions Professional and may not be combined with any other promotions, discounts or offers.
  • The Offer is limited to one (1) per individual Subscriber and may not be used on volume license orders.

Nice find, thanks OP! It looks like it works if you're purchasing Pro for the first time as well.

Quite welcome. :)

I was wondering if that code would work on a new subscription since the terms say that its upgrade only.

Anyone know the difference between standard and pro? Is it that huge of a gap?

2 keys vs 5 keys is about it, afaik.

I have a TechNet Pro I do not get access to the Enterprise editions

edit: ok, maybe I do? actually been a while since I logged in.

Here's a link to the differences between Std and Pro

I do not see key counts on that page. I dug around but couldn't find anything that implied the counts were any different. You have a source for the key count difference?

5 keys? they reduced the number of keys?
I had a standard account a couple of years ago and had 10 keys for each version of windows.

Yes. It was a wildly unpopular move.

What can I tell you? Key resellers ruin a good thing for everyone.

What would I miss out on without enterprise though? I honestly am more interested in the Windows OS and Office Suite type stuff.

Professional is only for people that want to have a ton of physical & virtual systems to utilize the volume license requirement.

I only have Standard since I don't have any further need beyond supplying my home's PCs & VMs.

You probably would get the best out of Standard rather than Professional. Other people may have greater needs, which is why I figured I'd post the promo code.

exactly why I won't upgrade, I had 10 keys but because I didn't use them fast enough they reduced everything to 2, then want me to pay more just to get it back up to 5 keys

I remind them of this every time they call my cell phone to solicit me to re-subscribe.

Since youre a standard user can you tell us how many keys you have? 2 for win 7 and 2 for office?

If I recall correctly, you get 2 keys for each version of a product on standard....so that's 2 on home, pro, ultimate, etc. Same for office products. I also think you can use the keys more than once, too.

With the current Technet Standard subscription for Windows XP, Windows 7, Office 2007, and Office 2010, you receive 2 keys. You can activate each key 10 times so you get 20 installs of Windows 7 Ultimate, 20 installs of Windows 7 Professional, 20 installs of Windows 7 Home Premium, and so on.

I don't know if you can have multiple installs of the same Windows 7 'edition' running on different computers at the same time. I would assume probably not but that is only an educated guess.

What a frustration.

I have an existing Technet Standard subscription, which has decreased in usefulness due to continued "adjustments" by Microsoft, silently removing software that used to be included - Server 2008 Web is a good example. First they pulled just the R2 version some months back, and now I see they've removed vanilla 2008 as well. No prior notification, and even the CSRs weren't initially able to tell me why I'd lost access to certain software titles in the middle of my subscription.

So anyway, figure this discount represents a good opportunity to finally bite the bullet and upgrade to Pro, but the online upgrade fails with this message:

An error occurred while retrieving your subscription information. We cannot find a subscription associated with your account that is ready to be renewed.
Fine, I fire up a web chat. Rep can't figure out what the issue might be, and refers me to phone support. Okay, lets try that. Issue? My existing account doesn't expire until July, and accounts cannot be upgraded / renewed until within 2mo of the expiration date. CSR's resolution? Buy a Technet Pro subscription at full price. No credit for being an existing customer, and no refund on existing account. Nice customer service.

Microsoft changing subscription terms and benefits to existing subscriptions is deplorable, and further locking users into the now limited accounts is unconscionable. At least give users the option of upgrading their devalued accounts at a discount, and clearly inform users of upcoming subscription changes. Bad business.

Yes, you can. Experience suggests that each install you are allowed functions at the same time.

prolly hidden in a EULA somewhere, or something.
I can't find anything on Microsoft's page either.

But, simply do a google search on "reduced technet keys"
