NVIDIA GK104 Coming Soon?

Hm weird. Doesn't happen on my work PC LOL

It was just the first link googling "gtx 280 price drop"

I can't remember the last time nVidia actually put a compelling price on a video card. They've always charged a premium over AMD/ATI.

Bring on the competition and single card surround!

GTX460 wasn't a compelling price? Its a better card than barts imo. It overclocks a lot further than 6870. GTX560ti wasn't a compelling price? Cheaper than 6950 and performs at least as well in most games. 9800gtx+ wasn't a good option compared to 4850? It was also cheaper iirc. What about GTX260? It was a better card than 4870 and cost about the same through out most of its life.

I was gonna post the same thing. Here's the chart to make it easier:

What do you guys think?

IMO, it's funny how the Radeon 7970 goes on sale on Jan 9th, which coincides with CES, and all of a sudden an nVidia chart showing 100% to 150% improvements gets "leaked" :)

I will agree that GTX460 had a good price. The GTX560ti have a good now...not so much at launch.
GTX260 being a better card than HD4870? Never happened, 4870 was even beating GTX280 in some games and as we all remember, at launch at a very much lower price.
9800GTX+ beating HD4850? In some few very select games and resolutions, HD4850 was generally faster in higher resolutions like 1920x1080 and above, and 9800gtx+ cost about $30 more than 4850.

EDIT: Wow, would love for that chart to be true but we've been tricked so many times before so I'm taking it with a fair bit of salt.
Now if true and Nvidia can launch the GTX 780 at $500-550 they have a sure winner there and then have GTX 770 at $400 and there's no doubt they'll sell a shitload of cards.

Wrong. HD 4890 traded blows with the gtx 280. HD 4870 512mb was a bit faster than the GTX 260 192, while the GTX 260 216 was faster than the hd 4870 1gb. 9800GtX was faster than the HD 4850 since it traded blows with the HD 4870 512mb. I remember this since I researched it because I was on the fence between a 9800gtx or hd 4870 512mb.

No, you are wrong. 4870 512mb traded blows with GTX 280 in many games with GTX 280 being much faster in a few games but at launch GTX 280 was $650, more than double that of HD4850 512mb at $299.
GTX 260 192, the first one, traded blows with HD4850 and for the most part the GTX 260 was a few fps faster but cost at launch $400 vs 4850 at $199.
Nvidia then quite fast lowered their prices but they were still a fair bit higher than the Radeons. Some months later Nvidia launched GTX 260 216 at $279 and was finally able to trade blows with the HD4870 512, but mostly GTX 260 216 won with just a couple of fps when it was faster and it was not that often.
A bit after that Nvidia launched GTX 285 and claimed the performance crown solidly for that generation.

im still waiting for them to release some low pro cards that are better than my gts 250 1gb, i dont want bleeding edge, i want fully functional in a small form factor :-P

i like being able to go to lans, get as good performance as people spending $2500+ on 'gaming' laptops and yet i have a 22" screen in one hand a jager bomb in the other and all the rest of my lan gear in my backpack ;-) for around $1000 total cost of ownership (in hardware)

Just not sure this is legit, this chart has been out for like a week or so.

I say its false.

I only know of two "leaked" charts. This is the second and it looks fresh.

That chart is ridiculous. 100% improvement over the previous generation across ALL pricepoints, a "GTR 785" which I assume is the refresh of the 780 (Nvidia sure does work fast) being 50% faster than the 780 and almost as fast as the 790 (so why even bother with the 790 if it's barely faster than a single GPU card?), and "GPU Physx Enabled" in a non Physx game.

Even if this was all true, there's no way they would release these at a price point which would make it exciting for anyone complaining about the 7970's price. The 780 alone would have to be $700+ for that kind of performance.

Some people need to put more effort into these fake leaks.

BTW, I just measured the percent improvement for the GTX 780 vs GTX 580 in the new chart and compared it with this old chart:

Here's a summary of my calculations:

Code:
Chart Model Percent Difference
New GTX 580 100.00%
New GTX 780 230.16%
Old GTX 580 100.00%
Old GTX 780 231.06%

Regardless of whether or not the charts are indeed authentic, I think that it's safe to say that they were made by the same entity.

Just like many AMD HD7970 leakes were out were true there is a possibility this chart is true. :)

If GTX770 is $299 it's mine on release!

I have an Intel I7 2600 with an Asus P8P67 Deluxe.
My motherboard is able of two PCI Exp 2.0 8x8x when in SLI.

Do you think that such a powerful cards will be ok at 8x8x?

Yes, I think so. PCI-E Gen2 still has lots of unused bandwidth with any GPU available right now, so I think this is going to be a repeat similar to that of the AGP 4x vs 8x scenario from a while back.

I will change my SLI if this is true and if it will give me 100% improvements over my existing GTX580.

Even if that chart was correct, which i highly doubt, i don't think Nvidia would go for such a huge performance jump right away. They would take baby steps and milk it little by little for years to come, or until AMD doesn't beat them again.

I'm inclined to agree with you, since it's typically every 2 generations to get double or more performance, not 1 generation.

We haven't had a die shrink jump in quite some time....

Did GTX480 not match GTX295? Did GTX280 not match 9800gx2? I fully expect GTX295 level performance from Nvidia's next top card.

That's not an equal comparison, per se. Maybe I'm not fully understanding your logic.

GTX 570 -> GTX 770
GTX 580 -> GTX 780

etc...

Gtx 480 vs GTX 280. That was what, 75% increase or something?
GTX 590 versus GTX 295, 100% at least. So its possible...

I mean look at the HD 7970, its a what, 60% increase stock over an HD 6970. Nvidia can do that too over the gtx 580 I bet.

so when do these go on sale?

Nobody knows. We're all just guessing around :p

Next week nVidia will be at CES. Lets see if they announce anything there.

Also, Kyle had mentioned some months ago that we will see something from AMD by January, and earliest we'll see anything from nVidia is March (if I recalled correctly).

So far Kyle have been right about AMD, they released their card by January. So I tend to believe Kyle at the moment about nVidia too. Unless nVidia announce something else next week. We'll see.

^ Coincide with the Ivy Bridge release, perhaps? That is, if Intel releases in as early as March, which i doubt and more than likely it'll be along April or May.

GTX 6xx first, then IB. Damn, I better start saving up even more money!

A 6970 isn't at the same price point as a 7970 though.

It was previous best gen of AMD vs current best gen of AMD. That was the comparison......................

I think this would make the most sense. Even if Kepler is ready there is no reason to release it right now. The 7970 is still not out the door and it looks like the remaining announced 7 series are just rebadges. So NVIDIA can happily continue selling their current series and polish Kepler a little more. Launching along side Ivy Bridge would be a huge boost for them.

Uhh HD 7850 and up are all new, only the stuff under MAY be remakes of previous ones. Seriously why does everyone have to be so biased on way or another?
