Hey everyone,

For a project at work, we need to purchase 1 or maybe 2 nVidia GeForce 590 GTX cards to put into a Cubix 2 rackmount device.

The problem is that I see very little inventory out there. Is there something I don't know, like is nVidia stopping production of these cards? Is there a replacement model?

Thanks.

I think they are just in limited supply and whenever they are available on e-tailers sites they get picked-up quickly so good luck finding one ...

From what i've seen the 590's are plagued by issues, not to say that there arent some good ones out there, but i know alot of people have had issues. I have noticed as well that the availability has gone to almost nil.

I would be worried if these cards have a heat issue. I put an order for the Cubix expand rack due to the power draw.

Can you elaborate as to where you read this?

There were a lot of people blowing out the VRMs on them at launch, due to "faulty" power management in the drivers as well as people overclocking the hell out of them. Do a google search or look around the forums here. This was mostly resolved, but I wouldn't purchase a GTX 590 myself. What are you using them for? I can understand if you are doing CUDA or GPGPU development in a box and need space, but for gaming they aren't that great of a purchase (IMO).

We'll be using this card on a dual hexcore server. The server will run the Unity 3D game engine to DirectX render "avatars" for an online project. The agency in Brazil suggested this card since it's supposed to be the biggest and baddest card that can crank out the mostest.

The fastest board available right now is the AMD 6990, which is notably faster than a 590. If all you want is the single fastest video card available and you don't need CUDA, the 6990 is it.

590s aren't "bad" cards, I just don't think they are worth the money for the performance. NVIDIA had to neuter them quite a bit to get them into the PCI-E spec for power draw.

Story of my life "OUT OF STOCK" @ Newegg

I had asus gtx 590 before and it was probably one of the best card I've ever used.
Check amazon or newegg. They get them in stock pretty often, but not sure if it's going to worth it.
AMD is releasing 7000 series next month and gtx 590 will be almost a year old video card.

I just returned a classified gtx 590 to newegg had it maybe 2 weeks...probably only about 10-15 hours played on it

so keep your eyes peeled for an open box 590 on newegg!!!!!

Probably due to high failure rate, settle on a 580, or wait until next year, probably bring out the new shiny stuff when AMD are rumoured to bring out some new GPU's end of January (although we all know what rumours amount to).

Amazon has three 6990s in stock. Also two 590s are in stock for $949 (wtf?) and one on pre-order for $749.

Shortly before Christmas is the worst time of the year to buy high-end hardware. Expect that prices sharply move downwards during or around CES.

negative sir. you will want the asus mars II for that.

its pretty hard to find gtx 590. the failure rate isnt even the real problem. best chances are calling up custom pc builders and see if they can hook you up.

OP, I would recommend you get 580's or 6970's instead (or if you can wait, 7970's). Enclosures like this are designed to house professional graphics cards which have lower power draw and TDP than gaming cards. Putting 2 dual GPU gaming cards in there is probably stretching it.

If space isnt an issue. These are the biggest baddest things on the block.

That's a triple slot card. OP's enclosure only has 4 slots.

Oh, while I was browsing through the "For Sale" forum, there is a seller by the handle, asuka10456, who posted two (2) GTX 590s for sale.

Hi, we wont be putting in TWO cards into the box (SLI) we'll just be putting 1 in, but have an extra one @ Rackspace for replacement purposes.

Newegg currently has a few in stock, I should snatch em up before they go OOS.

PS: We can't wait for that 2 weeks for this (to get new AMD board) because it would delay the project. Also, Tom's hardware has the 590GTX mix above/below compared to the 7970..

So here it is... $4,000 later...

Now Windows 2008 R2 doesn't go into GUI mode (nor Safe GUI), it reboots at CLASSPNP.SYS

Tried removing the drivers (using another video card) and letting Windows 2008 R2 pick up the drivers/hardware. But still hangs.

Waiting for Cubix to call back.

PS: With the card physically in the box it boots up fine.

The joys of mixing enterprise hardware and consumer oriented hardware.

Alright, got it working. The issue was the server I was connecting the pass-thru PCIe card to. The card does not seem to fully support the chipset of the pass-thru card. I changed over to another machine that has a Z68 chipset w/ an i5 processor.

Installed Windows 2008 R2 ... Stress tested a bit with 3DMark11 and FurMark. About 75C under load.

Shipping out on Monday.
