Google, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook Consider 'Nuclear' Blackout

I agree with the poster that said to put up a page instead on anything that would reach any of those services many fingers on the internet to generate a email to our representatives in government.

Hell I would cry tears of joy if these companies footed the bill to actually MAIL letters to these representatives based on our clicks.

SOPA needs to DIAF.

And I think it would IF the big corporations step up and do the right thing.

Just imagine the budget relief 2 billion pieces of mail would generate for the post office. ;)

My god. It just might work.

I'm all for it. In fact, I'd love it if all of the major search providers joined in. That'd be an interesting societal experiment.

Man...without google the whole corporate tech world will be in bad shape...cant tell you how much google is used to find solutions, MS Technet would actually be used again.

I hate Google and Facebook because I value my privacy and I hate twitter because I like to use more than 140 characters when I have something to say (except in forums of course). :p

My comment had nothing to do with SOPA, I'm just a filthy troll dag nabbit...

Is there anything you don't hate?

Indeed. I fully support this action and hope that it does indeed get the desired reaction. I think that it's long past due that somebody with some clout actually took a stand against the government's constant shilling out to the highest bidder.

Fuck'n Do It!! Even though I rely on Google heavily for my business, and can afford to shut down for a few weeks while my customer get nice message as to why when they visit my web site.

I really hope they follow through. Just to show em' who the fuck they are dealing with.

I'm all for this blackout. I don't even think it should be considered a "nuclear option." Rather, I'd like to see them implement the blackout for something like 2-3 days.

THIS!

I want to see 3 days of "super massive black hole". Because that's what it takes for the average American to contact their representative on the issue.

I don't think they'll have the stones to do it.
But if they do, it will be absolutely incredible.

Most people don't care or know about SOPA.

A perfect example of why the country is going to hell.

I'm definitely anti-SOPA but surely some folks here can figure out how a blackout stunt like this could easily backfire? I'm against this tactic.

go dark, go dark for good. All the twits can actually start to use language and increase attention span.

by what having the government legislate control of their businesses, forcing the final straw? i think the point is to prove the government is stepping too far for control.

they control media(or vice versa), about to apply greater control of the internet, and then what all industry?

there are too few industries with enough influence to draw attention to issues like these. media is already in the pocket of the government. who is left to influence a radical response?

i hope they do it. i hope people wake up.

its sad that it takes mega corporations and mega money to influence change, though it might be a step in the right direction.

Perhaps i'm pessimistic, but don't care about facebook or twitter, but if google and amazon did it, they would effectively shut down probably almost half the internet. The losses to various businesses would be astronomical, So I really can't see it happening ... unless it was just main sites they took down, like just amazon store, and google search/mail.

If Google does this, they will totally control the spin *and* they will get extremely good PR and respect from industry professionals.
Now, I think they will be smart enough to not blackout their professional subscribers...

All MMOs need to get with them on this too. image if World of Warcraft went down millions will nerd rage!!

Unless the internet companies replace their pages with an easy-to-understand explanation of what the government is trying to do - preferably with pictures.

Just plain blacking out might backfire because people will think they're incompetent and can't keep their servers running, rather than think they're down for a reason. Especially since googling SOPA isn't going to do you much good when Google is down as well.

Perhaps Google needs to provide read-made results of SOPA on their main site so people can research on their own.

If Google disabled googleapis.com for a few days, all Hell would break loose.

I say go for it. The paid windbags in politics have no idea what they're messing with.

Addendum: Then I'm sure the damned politicians would raise a shitstorm about how Google has too much power and must be shackled in the next MPAA/RIAA-sponsored legislation.

Then google leaves the US, politician is blamed, huge shitstorm to follow.

It needs to be more orchestrated.

The day it goes down, it should determine your location via IP-address and have a link to your representative/senator saying they are responsible for the shut-down.

They should go down, and put up a simple form that asks for your zip code and returns your congressmen's phone numbers.

May cause these bill makers to finally get up off the couch and stop counting all the money they make from "Legal" insider trading.

For some of my income I rely on google adsense, I am willing to forego it if it means stopping SOPA. I will consider it my donation to fight it.

I'd gladly support this. If only we had this type of awareness campaigns for other important stuff.

I'd hope they'd put up one of those candidate email forms that sends your representatives an email. Some link like, "Don't like this? Email your representative here".

Some count one email as around 100 that contact them regarding an issue. At least that is what I've read.

I've read something similar as well, I believe it was an IAMA reddit. Anyway, as I recall they said that they consider hand written letters and phone calls more persuasive, followed by e-mail, and then basically ignore form generated e-mail and the such. I believe they also said they can (and do) look up your voting history, though they can't see how you voted just that you did vote, and those who actually voted would given the highest importance.

I read it on the internet, so it must be true.

I would guess there would be some pretty nasty contractual repercussions if services in which their clients paid for which shut down for a publicity stunt - regardless of how worthy the cause.

My guess is that you'd see Google.com and Amazon.com, etc taken down and replaced with a message regarding the SOPA situation and how to contact your representative, etc. I'm not sure if the free Gmail would go down go as then how would people contact their Representative? Hand write a letter and then go buy stamps to mail it? Yeah, right.

So pretty much they are just preemptively shutting their sites down. I think this will make the politicians happy because that's their goal right??

I'd be all for this.

The skeptic in me says this is a "trial balloon", just something to hint aloud so that Congress hears it, something these companies wouldn't do

I hope I'm wrong. For it to truly work, IMHO, these companies would need to put their money where their mouths are, and truly do it. Put up a place-holder that explains what SOPA means, and how your blackout is a symbol of what SOPA could do. And do it internationally so that every other country knows what the US law is and what effect it could have on them. Arouse their ire, and thus the ire of foreign lobbyists and politicians, both at the US Congress, and those that are buying and paying for this proposed legislation.

Voters don't concern the sponsors of SOPA, which is a shame. However, this kind of pressure will.

If this bill passes and Obama signs it I'll...not vote for him even more.

Seriously though, it woud be a huge black eye for him to sign this utter garbage.

he already signed NDAA.

I wonder if all the media blitz specifically focused SOPA is not flak (I'm not denying SOPA is nasty to no end, no need to flame me) to deviate people's attention from NDAA 2012 version allowing indefinite detention of people.

that was already passed and signed........

Nonsense.

The same people that thought Obama was going to "veto this fascism"...they got that part right... are already making excuses on his behalf (as always because he never does anything wrong) and downplaying the entire thing. It's no big deal now because Obama signed it. That means it must be good.

That was his point. SOPA distracted the media from NDAA. NDAA 2012 was signed on December 31st.

Correct. The 4th branch of government doing it's thing, as usual.

NDAA signed and passed with a HUGE majority of Congress and Obama's signature. Look at who voted in favor of this, folks. Plenty of Rs and Ds.

Getting the picture yet? Probably not. Too late.

At least it was reworded several times instead of signed blindly. The indefinite detention sucked big time, but they made it so it doesn't apply to Americans. Small comfort considering the saying "give them an inch and they'll take a mile".

I joked on Facebook that we need to change the motto at Ellis Island from "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" to "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free so we can detain them indefinitely"
