PWM fans for case cooling?

Hey guys, I have a motherboard that has 2 PWM fan headers, and I was wondering on your opinions of using PWM fans as case fans? They would be for the two 120mm fans on the top of my 600T SE. Although just wondering, would it be using a motherboard sensor of some kind to decide on when to ramp up the speed?

i believe the settings for when they speed up are in your bios and are based off of a temperature, what temperature i'm not sure, but it would most likely be your cpu/motherboard or an ambient sensor

Note: This is assuming that you are talking about 4 pin fan headers on your motherboard and 4 pin fans

Yup. In particular I was looking at Notcua NF-P12 PWM fans.. so it's fine then, won't be too hot that way? My thinking is, is it better to cool when needed (PWM) or always cool (regular fans) to keep things optimum?

i use pwm fans and really like them. you should be able to set a fan speed profile in the motherboard bios to keep the temps and noise to your liking.

Looking at the Z68XP-UD3P manual, only the CPU PWM header is manageable by the bios (page 56). The default is set to dynamic CPU fan speed based on temperature.

The SYS_FAN2 header might be controlled by the same options, but it is not documented anywhere.

In theory pwm fans are better because they only rev up as needed however not every model fan is avalible in a pwm version. If it came down to a quality 3 pin fan vs a cheapo loud pwm fan get the quality one.

I am in the process of moving all of my case fans to PWM. I think only 2 of the 4 fan plugins on my motherboard are PWM. Using a PWM Y splitter and PWM fan controller, I can make all 4 case fans + 2 CPU fans PWM enabled.
