Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

Both assasins and sorc's get absorb bubbles. I think the assasin's activate on charge or jump whatever they get. I know I drop like a pile of rocks to any class that does any burst damage.

Which the trooper and the smuggler both do. Against a Sith Maurader or Juggernaught you still have the problem if they are managing their companion as Vette and Lt. Pierce can both do burst damage as well.

On a different note, Bioware/EA needs to do something about there digital download service.

I've been stuck downloading the game for 7hrs. (I've tried the pause/restart trick, also exited and reopened. No, not my ISP I get 50Mb/s or 6MB/s consistent in other places)

It started at a decent 3.5MB/s and has slowly trickled down to 130KB/s.. this.is.stupid.

1. game directory
2. filename launcher.settings
3. open with notepad
4. scroll to bottom, edit "P2PEnabled": "true" <-- may be set to false
5. save with notepad

Taken from SWToR Forums. I went from 115KB/s to 1.5MB/s

I don't know man maybe other sorc's know something I don't. But I know I've been nothing but crushed lately.

I really shouldn't say much because the game is probably balanced around level 50 so we'll see then...

Hit 50 today and did some PVP. Man, scrapper-spec'd Scoundrel is so fun. Still can't do much vs. those people in PVP gear though.

Long Dev post here about slow downloads and corrupted files. If you are having this issue you should check it out, and they may work with you directly to resolve. It appears to be a high priority issue.

are they gonna make mods for this? I really hate where some of the skill/item bars are on screen.

One of their top priorities is UI customization.

3rd party mods? I don't believe are high on their list. I hope not.

24 Sniper. You might choose if someone lives or dies but it doesn't matter at all as it makes about as much difference as killing quest givers in other MMOs. Light side/dark side points only affects some of the gear you can equip.

People saying that it's like KOTOR or a single-player RPG are forgetting that it doesn't matter what choices you make; there are no consequences for your character and the game world stays the same. In the end you save the universe whether you wanted to or not. It's still based on 7+ year old MMO systems and thus retains most of those trappings.

There is way more to it than light or dark side points. And it does make a difference. You may or may not see people later on in the game depending on if you killed them or let them live. Of course you may not know if your choice made a difference unless you played through again and made different choices.

Leveling in a guild with some of the other same classes and discussing those choices with them I can absolutely tell you that things you do do make a difference.

You aren't going to permanetely change the world as that affects other players stories as well as the game world they play in. This is more about changing your own storyline and how you interact in the world with the choices you make. At the end yes, you will save the universe same as any one else, but how you get there you have at least some input in along the way.

But your dialogue choice doesn't really seem to matter. Your actual participation in the story is pretty much limited to hitting the same hotkeys over and over while you kill 10 of this or 10 of that.

The choices do make a difference, as I discussed above. And the kill 10 of this or that are only bonus missions and not required to be completed to complete the main quest. Meaning you aren't penalized if you don't wish to grind.

Three more hours until maintenance which will last 8 hours at least. Wonder why this game and WoW have such long maintenance times when Rift has 30 minute maintenance?

Well anyways here are the projected patch notes from what I understand. If there's no patch don't shoot me!

Because no one plays Rift?

Hopefully that's the version they update the game too. Based on a couple things in the patch notes, like the graphics options menu fixes, etc. I'll be glad to see it.

Rift actually was doing pretty good before SWTOR came out. I'm betting a lot of people dropped it though now :D

I dropped rift last june

I was under the impression it didn't do that well.

Its subscriber base had been growing after its first huge slump in numbers. They do well with adding new content every 1.5 months or so. The company behind rift is rock solid imo. I just got sick of playing mmo's. Gonna play SWTOR for the single player story lines and a little pvp. I can basically quit playing whenever doing it that way so my wife doesnt get mad

Yeah...think I am done with warzones unless something changes on it where it is mixed...or something...It is ridiculous trying to play as a republic...

I tried 4 different warzones today...and lost horrible in each one...

This is the last one I decided to take a picture of lol..

Btw, this is with me and barrel (from the sith lol, he was in full PvP gear) doing "/clubdance" about a 1/2 way through...seriously everytime I ran in an area I was getting hit about 3 times with a lightsaber and dieing...No lie...then my last death was I got hit from behind and before my character could even get up I was dead. :D OMG SOO MUCH FUN!!!

Only reason I have been trying warzone the past couple days was to just do the daily...think I am just going to abandon that quest...lol

I played jedi guardian for most of my time in beta and just recently started a trooper. In regards to the first 20 levels the trooper is hands down the funner class IMO. However the Guardian develops after about lvl 30. So right now I'm enjoying the trooper more than my Operative and considerably more than my Guardian.

I agree. Troopers and Bounty Hunters mature VERY early and stagnate a bit in the mid-20s. Warriors and Knights, on the other hand, suck early on and mature in the mid-20s. Fighting early on is such fun as a Trooper. You can throw a sticky grenade on one target, knock another down with an explosive round, stun another with full auto, then poop on them all with mortar volley. Then shoot them with your electricity gun and a few charged bolts.

The warrior, on the other hand, can jump in and hit stuff with a lightsaber. No particularly interesting or special attacks, just hit stuff.

I picked up a purple companion gift from an underworld trading mission tonight. I'm level 19. Anyhow, it was a "love" gift and I gave it to Mako.

I got 0 affection. WTF

Lol yup, by like lv4-5 my trooper had alot fun skills. Love using motor and barrage and killing a group of mobs without them even budging. Pvp my trooper shines, played 4 matches last night and dmg done ranged from 150k-210k and im only lv 32. Cant wait till i unlock my full skill tree.

Bow,

When you type in /ops, the enemy team doesn't see your text. Also, some people do enjoy PvPing all day and having full PvP gear. (This response is from your own statement in the /ops channel in your screenshot)

The system that SWTOR implemented for "boosting" stats is not anywhere near a good system. There needs to be brackets from 10-19, 20-29, and so on. 50s should be in their own brackets. It's not necessarily correct to hate on the player for playing. He has no choice in the matter.

A good thread of some of the complaints for PvP are in this stickied community thread: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=45435

This.

I have no clue why you would hate on someone who wears full PvP gear. Obviously it's because they PvP

Just sounded like sore losing to me

Not entirely true. Ilum is broken as fuck.. No one pvps they help each other to farm the rewards

So full pvp stuffs may not equal a pvp player.

Game should have remained in beta for another month at least.

It is true, you just aren't looking at the situation from a broader view. This isn't just some simple issue that is broken. The system needs a rework. Both Warzone and open pvp objectives on Ilum.

You know that the rewards on Ilum are minuscule for the amount of time it takes to get full PvP in the time the game has been released? It doesn't reward kills, it really only gives you rewards for the objective. Compare that to a Warzone..which is what we are responding too because Bow was in a Warzone. You can't get the PvP gear quickly like these players have by bringing up Ilum as some sort of half-argument.

You need points from Warzone commendations (http://www.torhead.com/item/7RcvnS0#comments) and Mercenary commendations (http://www.torhead.com/item/5i5fkvm) to get PvP gear at the speed people have been getting them. Since it requires 30 Warzone commendations to get 10 Mercenary commendations, it is much more efficient to run Warzones. For example, you can get from 60-110 or so Warzone commendations for a win in a Warzone. The "PvP" gear people are level 50 (gear requires Level 50) and require 200 of both these commendations for a chance to drop the required gear. That doesn't count the fact that you can have duplicates from those "drops."

Your point would of been true if the game was out longer. But you don't get nearly enough rewards fast enough by focusing on Ilum. So yes, full pvp gear is a full pvp player playing Warzones primarily.

I'm not level 50. But I've been top-tier healer in most of my bg's. The group I roll with is 2 50's and 1 level 48. I am Level 40. But I am still getting PvP gear. In fact, by the time I hit 50...I will be decked out because I farmed all the commendations. Does that not make me a full PvP'er right now? Sure does.

People need to stop looking at this issue as a simple, "This is broken, this single issue is why." When they haven't done the research to think, it isn't this one issue. It's a collective bit of issues. I have no doubt things will get fixed. Warcraft took several years of iterations to get an honor system they like and even then, they change it every expansion. Look at history and know that Bioware is in a better position than Blizzard was. Time will tell if they take advantage of it. (I bring up Blizzard because people are comparing everything to Warcraft and it is easier for making my point)

The fact of the matter is, especially as far as PVP goes, there need to be a few simple rules to make it all much better. Even with "stat boosting", the difference between a level 10 in beginner gear and a level 50, with all their abilities and PVP gear, is enormous. They should not meet on any "scripted" battlefield. Ever. WoW did this right, I can't understand why SWTOR is doing it wrong here. Having brackets means that level and gear are taken into account as it should be.

I don't know what you mean by "scripted."

You are correct SWTOR is doing it wrong. WoW did this wrong for a while as well, though and most people don't remember. WoW didn't have battlegrounds until June 7th, 2005, six months after release. SWTOR does. It's just the method of implementation that is wrong. I would think from a technical point of view, this is much more minor and easier to fix than actually adding the system. Even when that was added, the Honor system was complete fubar and required people to essentially spend 12-14 hours a day to get to max rank. It was broken then too.

I think it will be fixed, as overall, this is a minor issue compared to if the game didn't come with any system at all. There would be an even larger uproar if people PvP'ed and got nothing out of it...even if I don't really care. I just like fighting players. The gear is .... secondary, really. For me at least.

Just skimmed through the thread, great to hear everyone's experiences and opinions. The thing that strikes me is how incredibly different everyone's experiences are, can't say I share the same complaints or praises. I was pre-order and have been playing solidly since Dec. 13. I was invited to betas before that, but was too busy playing Skyrim to waste time on a character that would be deleted.

I was never a WoW player although I have played it for a bit. I think a lot of people confuse typical MMO elements with being a WoW clone - MMO's before WoW had these same things and MMO's afterwards will as well. I think SWTOR does a ton for the MMO genre by adding some engrossing story lines to tie it all together. I'm impressed. While I agree the graphics are mediocre, it's due to the textures really. The game, however, is already 20GB, so adding higher resolution textures are just going to increase that. I wouldn't be surprised if they do a graphical overhaul in 6 months or a year where they redo textures, something that's feasible after the initial release downloading blitz is over. My $0.02.

So far the most annoying thing is all these terrible load times, even from an SSD.
To get to a dungeon from the fleet I have to go to airlock (load time), run 100 meters, enter the ship (load time), run 100 meters to the star map console, travel (instant) to a planet, run 100 meters, leave the ship to a space station (load time), run 100 meters to the shuttle, get into a shuttle to the planet (load time). Only two dungeons on Ilum have the starter quest right at the entrace, for other you may need to travel around.

Each companion has thinks they like and dislike. There are some gifts that earn more affection points than others. Level and how many times you've given them a particular type of gift make a huge difference as well.

Yeah, I learned this the hard way myself... this site has some useful info on companions and what gifts they will like.

Game was patched.

I can already tell you the menus are not fixed. This tid bit was taken from the patch notes.

"•Graphics preferences in settings files are now consistent with actual settings in use."

Incorrect. I just checked. Medium is still "high", high doesn't do anything and low is low. Though with regard to the shadows it seems to be correct. I'm now seeing the higher quality shadows with the high setting. Where as before it was all blobs on high.

At least you can login. I downloaded the patch, then went in game then BOOM BSOD.

So now i reboot back to loading the game, and now I have a 4.76gb patch to download.

Patch day ftl!

any perks to having companions like you?

You mean like same class and focus? Aric Jorgan was my first comp and he's pretty much like me... We could take out mobs pretty quickly but I didn't notice any special perks from using him... I am using Elara Dorne now and it takes longer to clear mobs out but I haven't died once since using her. :)

any perks to having companions like you?

They have their uses. Typically they can use your old gear as you upgrade and in some circumstances that class may be more helpful than another. In other instances another type of companion might actually be a better idea because they'll help cover your weaknesses. In my case, I'm using a Sith Maurader. I have no ranged attacks to speak of. I've got a charge attack that puts me right in front of the enemy. I've got a lightsaber throw which is really short range and I've got Force choke. None of these have more than about half the range of a blaster. Vette on the other hand is basically ranged DPS. With decent armor and endurance she holds up in a fight well. As a result she covers for what I can't do which is ranged attacks. Against a force user, this is of limited value. So I switch to Jaesa who is basically a Jedi Consular / Sith Inquisitor hybrid. She doesn't do near the damage Vette does, but her attacks don't get deflected by Jedi Knights / Masters. (They won't deflect all of them, just a lot of them.)

So yeah, different companions for different things.
