I want to use a 3rd party VPN provider to keep my P2P and web browsing habits private. I want to create a setup that allows all my traffic to be routed thru the 3rd party VPN.

I currently have 3 machines (a WHS box that handles my storage, backups and torrents, a laptop and my gaming/surfing machine). I use Hamachi and RDP to manage my WHS box when Im not home. I probably will end up adding more machines as time goes by.

From the research I have done it seems like my best bet would be a router that can act as a VPN server. I am not a network guy and know just enough to be dangerous. I am looking for something that is simple, easy to use, and reliable. Cost really isnt an issue, but I do want to get my money's worth.

Thanks for reading this and I look forward to hearing from you all.

I would prefer all the setup to be on the router so the VPN is transparent and nothing has to be done to the computers.

Remember you will take a performance hit, and give that VPN provider full access to know everything you do online.

If you want to go down this route, first find the VPN provider. You are going to have to pay for any that are worth using. Then find a router that can support the VPN standards you need. DD-WRT is an open source firmware you could look at running on a supported router to gain VPN abilities.

Yep, start with one of those so-called VPN providers and see what they require. Most of them need a software client. Speeds are usually pretty bad too. 'tis the price you pay to be anonymous.

iPredator and a DD-WRT router should do the trick. iPredator doesn't require a software client - supports PPTP & OpenVPN, and (claims they) keep no logs.

Ok this is easy but takes time and some know how.

1. install VMware workstation or server
2. Create the follow VMs
a. Debian 6 Lenny with (BIND9 OpenVPN/SwanVPN server)
3. Download PFsense firewall from fpsense.org they have a VMware appliance VM set it up so that your VPN and DNS server are behind it.
4. Create fake domains in your DNS server (BIND9) then add mutliple VIPs for each Domain you create then routes.

What you will create is a fake network and once you VPN to it you will mask your IP location and traffic.
I do this on my laptop when I need to do secure communications. If I want I can say my IP addess is from Canada or Japan while the whole time I am at StarBucks in San Francisco....

How do you hide the fact you eventually come from the IP at "Starbucks"?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

At this point Im going to try a few different VPN providers to see how their "software packages" work. If that doesnt do the trick I will buy a DD-WRT router and restart the process. And as a final solution I figure ill build a dedicated box and try to figure out how to use Untangle or pfSense.

P.S. Thanks for the detailed info Sean but thats way beyond my abilities.

P.P.S. Anyone have any thoughts on whether pfSense or Untangle is more noob friendly?

I thought untangle was pretty easy to setup but I never used the vpn in it. pfsense isn't too bad either. They're both free so no reason not to try them out and see for yourself.

I'm new to this, From what I gather VPN's are not 100% reliable and your exposing your data potentially just by signing up.

What options are there for encrypting IP address'? Or do I have to be part of an elite club to know these things? :D

You don't encrypt IP addresses you encrypt the data you're sending/receiving.

And how would one go about this task or at least learning about this? Just looking for friendly pointers on how to be invisible
