Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Safe to assume all LMG's already have heavy barrels, that's part of turning an assault rifle into one.

You'd think, but the game attachments don't necessarily translate into their real-world counterparts completely. Just think of them as MW-style perks but named after things that really exist, like they did in MoH.

I don't know off the top of my head whether there are any heavy barrels for LMGs in this game, but then the heavy barrels basically do the exact opposite of what they ought to in the game anyway, so who knows.

Anyone else ever have an issue where you can't use your keyboard in game? Really annoying. I just restart my comp when it happens because ESC, ALT-F4, windows key, etc won't work.

I've had problems accidentally hitting ~ when reaching for the 1 key sometimes. Look and fire still work, but you can't move or use any other keys. Very disorienting.

I really like the SG553 from coop for the engineer class.

I tried that for a while, but never worked through the unlocks. I think the problem was I unlocked a bunch of engineer guns all at once (co-op, assignment, leveling) and so now I have a bunch of unmodified guns, when I used to just run with a fully modified SCAR-H. I need to just pick one and use it for a while.

I know I am late.

I prefer 2142.

The graphic are good but the hud, the sound, the spawning system suck too much.

And the most great thing about bf3 is the brand new secret weapons from bf1 expension pack, the flash light. Awsome.

Never heard of such an issue, unless it's a wireless keyboard. If that's the case, have you changed out your batteries? I have a wireless keyboard at work and keys stop functioning when the battery is about shot. I've also had issues when there's been other wireless devices in the area causing interference lag on my keyboard.

Wired keyboard.

That's exactly what happens. I can look and shoot, but not a single key on my KB works. AFAIK I'm not hitting the ~ key.

Next time it happens, check the top left of the screen and see if you have the console up (and a bunch of addswwdasadswsaw in there). I only figured it out by accident when I happened to look in the corner.

Can anyone run ultra everything with good fps with a system that's similar to the one in my sig?

What resolution? A 6870 isn't going to give you very good frame rates with Ultra. You can try running at High (which looks pretty much the same as Ultra anyway), but even with MSAA turned off, I think the 6870 is going to struggle a little bit, and you'll need to turn some other settings down as well.

post nerfing, I find the scar useless. I used to love the shit outta it, but now I cant kill anything with it.

I focus on rate of fire, accuracy and recoil more than power. The gun was OP thus even the most unskilled BF player could own with that gun.
I still rip off 40+ kill rounds with the scar. Doesn't matter how powerful a gun is, if your gun rapidly fires bullets accurately with little recoil, you're going to do well.
That's why the Famas and F2000 are beast weapons.

I was thinking it was just me, so this is good news. I tried running it on ultra after I got my i5 but it was a little laggy. Turned it to high and have had very minimal problems. I think my AA is at 2x.

Would another 6870 to run crossfire be able to run at maxed settings?

I'd be worried you might start to run into VRAM problems at that point. Try turning off deferred AA (instead of 2x) and using Medium for Post-processing AA instead. Medium does a good job on the aliasing without being overly blurry, and is much less performance hungry than 2x MSAA.

Ok, just checked. 1920 x 1080 on high. With MSAA @ 2 my lowest FPS I get is 30, with it off the lowest I get is 37. mind you, both of those low FPS drops only happen for a second or 2.

Why would I have VRAM problems?

Agreed, you're gonna need quite a bit more GPU than a 6870 to run Ultra. Remember that the 6870 is slower than a 5870 and was always marketed as a higher end midrange card.

I am about to take the plunge and get an i5 2500 and a ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155 and G.SKILL Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB of DDR3 ram to replace my current LGA 775 motherboard and e6750 Core2Duo 2.66 ghz. Currently my system us crappy with BF3, whether I am playing with high settings or low settings, barely make a difference. I hope this new combo along with my 5850 will do OK for the time being until I can get the mullah to get a new videocard. For those running with game with a 5850: how is your frame rate and smoothness? Is there any stuttering/crappy fps in firefights? I would like to run the game with at least textures set to high (1 gig should do I hope at 1080p?).

What say you?

ps, I was also thinking of going low end and getting a AMD 1055t 6-core but I didn't like a lot of the benchmarks and if I get the i5 I can at least not worry about my cpu for at least another 2 years. Ideas?

I'm going to sound special ed with this question, but here it goes:

I really enjoy the multiplayer but an unfortunate reality of being an adult means that I can't always play matches through to the end - given the progression aspect of multiplayer, I wanted to know whether stats like kills, etc, are saved if you quit midway through a match? I don't want to quit 2 minutes before the end of a round and have all my XP from the round removed!

Yes, it'll still be counted. And if you check your battlelog, your name is still there but moved to the bottom of the list even if you have a high score, all the people that participated in the game are listed regardless of whether they played 'til the end or not. You can have a hundred people listed in a 64 player game if you have a lot of ragequits in a high ticket game.

quick ?.
i have bf3 installed on my 2nd system.my main watercooled system is now up and running.
once bf3 is installed on new system, will my previous experience level be intact after the new install of bf3
thanks

Is it just me or is the recoil on the FAMAS insane? I'm back to M16A3.

And I must say, I really like the HK53.

Just picked up my i5 2500k, 8 gigs of ddr3 patriot ram and my MSI Military II. I love it! I had $260 in gift cards and still ended up spending $180 out of picket, haha.

MP stats will be fine, I believe it saves on their end.

the gun with no attachments is pretty difficult to use, once i unlocked the holo sight and suppressor its like a laser beam.

I was using Holo, Foregrip and Heavy Barrel. I keep going back to the M16A3. Started using the AK-74M now too. Come to think of it, most of the Assault weapons are inter-changeable. There really is no 'best' weapon.

I found the same thing - I liked the F2000 (the FAMAS not so much), but the M16A3 seems just as powerful, has less recoil, and is crazy accurate. I can even win the "around the corner" battles with it.

Related to this, anyone know how it determines whether your stats will be counted for a round or not? Is there a time component, like you stay in the round for a certain amount of time, or is it that you score points in the game, or is just the act of joining enough? I'm getting tired of joining a match, finding out the score is 350-50 with teams of 16-10 (or worse, joining with the score 100-1 and immediately having the game end), quitting to find a better server, and still having the match count against my record. Be nice if you could see the score in Battlelog before joining.

Am busy grinding through support and engineer now....in people's opinions what are the best weapons for these two classes?

Support is definitely m249+3.1x scope+extended mag+foregrip. Engi is m4a1+reflex+silencer+foregrip.

Your stats from a match are uploaded to BattleLog once the round is over.

It isn't just when the match is over though. Sometimes I have the server crash on me (not very often anymore, thankfully) and I lose an unlock I got briefly before the crash, and sometimes I still have it afterwards. Why is it servers only crash when you're having an awesome round?! :( The only crash I had yesterday was when I was absolutely dominating, had something like 60+ kills and MVP by over 1k points. :(

Also, stingers are still completely useless. I don't get how they work; guy in a scout heli pops his flares, I immediately lock on and fire. He flys straight and fast, missle gets in close to his tail...then just kinda veers away and blows up uselessly. Wtf. SOFLAM/Javelin OTOH are freakin' awesome, except that when my teammate blows up a full scout heli with 5 people in it, I get a measly 10-20 points from laser designating it, while he gets 1k+ points.

Was in a game earlier with my clanmates on wake island. Three designated recons with soflams, two designated drivers, and a bunch of engineers with Javelines and some supports dropping ammo. NO ONE was getting through :D

I must of been on the other team. Played this map last night and we didn't get through. and when we switch we had 0 Soflam, 0 Javelines, and 0 support dropping ammo.

we did have a few drivers sitting on flag C shooting at the large ship in the water though while flags A, B, D, and E were all taken in a matter of minutes. It was great fun because I had 32 players all to myself as my team decided that killing the other team wasn't important.

I normally play with friends its hard to play alone and win.

Also, a stupid bug with recon tools, probably all but I've only experienced it with the radio beacon and SOFLAM: if you spawn and quickly pull it out to deploy it JUST after spawning, it will go away. It seems to happen when I had a prior soflam/radio beacon up before dying.

I hate to say it, but...my friends are bad. I usually end up doing a lot better when I can take the lead and do my thing, instead of feeling obligated to spawn in and help them do...wtfever they're doing.

I was playing Caspian last night with a friend and we both had stingers. I also had the team explosive perk so we both had lots of missiles.
I usually never have luck with stingers, but we stationed ourselves around the forest and antenna, and dropped a good 9 aircraft. Waiting until they are in a dogfight, or attacking a target, one of us would lock and fire, the other would wait for the flare and fire if the pilot evaded the first. Some pilots get out of range, some flare and escape, but we got lots of hits, more then usual. No soflam, just lots of missiles and waiting for the right moment.

I usually just play random, so it was my 1st real solid time playing with friends over mic. I would get on the antenna, spot targets and direct/warn my mate attacking/defending the gas station...hes new, but was able to kick serious ass.

Had a dream last night where I was driving down the expressway when suddenly a T-90 turns the corner and blows my car to bits.

I think I play this game too much.
