It seems they have a propensity to start house fires. Cheap VRM generally equates to expensive cigarette lighters -- as MSI learned not too long ago -- but it appears that Gigabyte too decided to skimp on the expensive components for expensive motherboards. If you bought one you should probably contact Gigabyte and keep the rest of us updated as to how things are going.

Yea. It's times like this when a company screws up and either attempts to save face or screw customers even further that can influence a lot of people's buying decisions for future builds. I don't own a 2011 socket platform, but if Gigabyte starts ignoring people with affected boards or refuses to pay for shipping or what have you, I'd certainly steer away from any Gigabyte products at all.

If you got one, let us know whether they're making the recall process a pain or if it's smooth

or if you're house is on fire :)

This is why I let new tech settle down for six months, I buy it after all the quirks and problems are ironed out.

I'd still buy a Gigabyte boards regardless of this little setback, my only other choice would be Intel, or EVGA.

I agree now after the Sandy debacle last January. I'll wait it out on new mobo platforms for about three months.

Fate wasn't going to let me get off that easy, I guess. But if I understand the issue correctly, I shouldn't be affected since I don't overvolt anything? damnit.

Yes it can affect you. The bios update was released but it essentially cripples your board so you can't overclock or overvolt at all. Only other thing is replacement.

Son of a... I ordered on the 29th of Nov, so I would have to overnight it and hope UPS actually gets it from Louisiana to CA in one day, which I find extremely unlikely to happen, in order to get a refund to get a different board. Or else wait for a revision and RMA with gigabyte. If only newegg hadn't sold out of the P9X79 WS when I pulled the trigger. :(

at least they are recalling them, unlike MSI who blindly refused to say there was anything wrong with their AMD 700 and 800 series boards when it come to using the x6's at stock clocks let alone overclocked.

I wonder how many bought two new motherboards this year only to have both recalled. Would be kinda funny.

Or not.

Last night I was debating if i should swap the ASUS X79 board to a gigabyte because I always had good experience with GB boards in AMD system. THank god I stuck with ASUS or else I'll have to make another trip to return the board lol...

I've been a 100% Gigabyte user for the past three years (four GB board purchases). After a lot of consideration this one time I made an exception and bought the ASUS x79 pro because of its features (e.g. fan control). Boy am I glad I did.
