Skyrim impressions

I am 42 hours in and the game is beginning to piss me off. It seems the further I get in the more bugs begin to show.

The most recent one is water not displaying. I have rivers and lakes with chunks missing out of them.

I have several main missions that cannot be completed due to bugs. It appears that if I explore a dungeon or other area before receiving the quest for that area the item I am supposed to collect simply doesn't exist.

I had 8 dragon souls collected but couldn't unlock any shouts because it kept telling me I needed a dragon soul. This finally changed when I killed two dragons in a row and suddenly all of the souls became available.

The last several sessions of playing have ended with crashes to the desktop.

If I wasn't enjoying the game as much as I am I would have uninstalled it a week ago.

can someone explain to me how in the world I enchant a bow or do anything to one so that I can make it more powerful other than using the grindstone to upgrade it and using better arrows?

Enchanting it with a fire/frost/shock damage enchant is, to my knowledge, the only other thing you could do.

how do you do it though? enchanting ask for 3 things and I never have any enchantments..how/where do you get them or do I need a perk first?

You don't need any perks to do enchanting. You have to start with an item though, which you break down (disenchant) to learn how to do that type of enchant.

So if you had a fire damage axe in your inventory, you'd go to an enchanting table, disenchant it. Then you'd pick an item you want to put the enchant on. Then select the newly learned enchant. Then lastly you need a soul gem. Better soul gems yield better enchants, so when i'm building an item, i'll often fork up 1000 gold for a grand soul gem to make it better. Before you hit "R" to craft/enchant the item, you also have the option to hit "F" and rename it.

ya, instead of selling magic shit you need to see if you can disenchant it first. Then sell what is left. My bow does 212 pts of damage + 63 fire + 63 lightning X 3 sneak. The base number includes a fortify archery ring and necklace. Also if you have infinite destruction then you never have to recharge the bow.

Thanks guys.. i didnt know about the disenchant thing. Just didthat to a bow to get some shock damage, used it on mybow with a greater soul thingie.

See if it helps me at all with the dragons. They seem hard to fight as an archer as i can sneak attack them

My bows still suck even at level 25. My best bow is like base 44 plus my 10 percent necklace plus whatever the elven arrows. add

Seems only useful with sneak attacks other it take tons of arrows to kill anything

That's all I use a bow for. The aiming in Skyrim blows other wise I'd use a bow a lot more.

I beg to differ. I find the bow quite predictable and useable. Even to the extent of being able to hit moving targets over long distance consistently. It's quite satisfying :D

I got to disagree, i found the bow stupid easy (almost over powered). Ive beating the dark brother hood Q's and main story and used the bow 90% of the time. between sneaking shot damage and the slow down perk the bow makes you pretty much un-touchable.

Basically one of the first people I met outside of the tutorial, Sven, allowed me to have him follow me. So I did. That dude kicked some major ass, until I lost him somewhere in the south-east corner of the game and didn't realize it :( I had given him a ton of loot beforehand too. I think a group (5 or so) of spiders got him. I really want to find a Dwemer fortress. I just made an Argonian and have been working on misc. quests right from the start and wandering.
For the bow conversation, I enjoy it, but I am still low level (12?) and using lame bows. I don't think it is underpowered, perhaps overpowered if you sneak and blast somebody.

I have a mod that makes eagle eye not drain stamina so ridiculously fast, a mod that removes auto-aim and tweaked some controls settings. I was in a cave doing a quest for someone in Solitude and near the entrance of the cave is a seriously sweet hidey hole to shoot at people with my bow. Long story short, I had an absolute blast just pegging people with impunity and not having them figure out where I was. :)

this is all i've done until today, finally fought the first 2 dragons but yea, if you are going archery + sneak, be prepared to sneak every where get your sneak shots off and then run like hell and hide until the AI forgets where you are. Once your sneak is like 60+ the enemies will literally walk right next to you and not even react.

I went through a bunch of stuff I probably shouldn't have early on doing the sneak-n-run

once you can get the critical hit perks that some what offsets the sneaking but not entirely specially once you get the perk that raises it from 2x to 3x.

I do love making some awesome shots and still love watch people slump over a chair or table with an arrow sticking out of the face.

I've been playing my sneak archer on Master since I started the character, now at 50 hours and I still think it's too easy. Even at the start, most enemies die in about 3 hits and their detection abilities don't increase on harder difficulties.

I'm obviously not going to allow them to detect me on purpose, but what's the point of Master difficulty if they can walk right past me and not notice me? I shoot them in the face with an arrow and they stare right at me and don't even notice me... Now that my skills are 100 it's even more ridiculous, at this point they don't see me no matter what I do, so all fights are trivial now.

By the way, I kept default 100 HP the entire time, I've been putting all my levels into Stamina. I die in 1 hit to make things more exciting but honestly I rarely get attacked in the first place.
I'm not using any fast travels of any kind, and I'm about halfway through the Dark Brotherhood and have 1 more quest for the Thieves. At this rate it will take me 200 to 300 hours to finish all the main questlines. I will obviously stop playing before that happens.

Currently level ~40 with sneak, archery, smithing at 100. I'm going to have to switch to One-handed to continue gaining levels. By the time I "finish" the game I will be level 80 lol.

^ That's awesome. I really wish I had the patience. I'm actually pretty proud of myself for not typing "tgm" yet.

4-Gigabyte Tuning (Large Address Aware) update is now available on Steam

I'm assuming it's an automatic install.

So I don't screw anything up...is there any setting people have to use to activate it or is it just there and you fire it up and go? Fire up the game's exe?

I'm also using SKSE.

Are there many people over level 50? and still haven't done the major quests?

I was wishing that a leveling mod was available to slow down leveling or at least control it a bit more.

I agree. They toned down the scaling, but i still feel that it makes the game feel wonky sometimes. You never really know what you're going to get from a fight.

did the other games tell you the level of the enemies? I can't remember or am I just thinking of Borderlands?

it's auto install as long as you have auto-patching enabled on Steam...works automatically

not sure about any compatibility issues with any mods

Nope, i don't think any of them have. BUT, pre oblivion the levels of the mobs at least stayed the same so you wouldn't approach some bandits thinking they'd be cake, only to get wtfpwned by noob mobs.

In Skyrim i always assume the mob can own me, and am sometimes surprised when i one-shot it.

I'm at Level 41 and still have not completed the main quest...leveling seems to have slowed down considerably once you hit the late 30's

Did you manage to get it working? When I double click TESV.exe the game crashes after selecting "Continue" at the main screen.

I've deleted all 4GB files and SKSE files.

May have to validate your install. Make sure you back your .ini and mods before hand.

Leveling is entirely based on your skill levels. It doesn't slow down as much as you just run out of skills to level. Start leveling up a new armor set or a different weapon and you'll gain levels pretty fast again, at least for a while.

yup good point

early on a switched up weapons, spells etc but now I'm satisfied with my one handed + destruction + restoration + heavy armor + lockpicking primary skills that it's not as rewarding starting a new one

Seems like if you enjoy combat (and lots of it) then do the Civil war questlines.

otherwise i'm growing mildly tired of Skyrim. need ot pick up the main storyline again i suppose.

I must not be able to get the hang of it. Close up and what have ya and only in sneak mode I can kick ass with a bow, now that my main weapon is at 100 I'll be switching to more sneak and bow kills. As skill raising will raise your level faster then just going about with one weapon type.

Question though. I'm level 47, near 48, I've completed the main quests and all the big side ones(Bards, collage, companions, stormcloak, DB, TG, daedric, devine and forsworn, and I'm a Thane in all the towns that you can buy a house in and a couple of others.

WTF is there to do now? I've been free roaming and finding new locations but that gets old.

My main goal is to finish the last 2 achievements I have left(level 50 and pick 50 locks(done) and pockets(just over half way there).

Ideas?

Really there isn't much beyond trying to complete your map and unlocking every location therein. You'd be surprised how much unexpected cool shit you will stumble across this way. Finding new spots will also reveal new quests, even though at that point most of them will be the infinite type of miscellaneous quests.

Maybe...unlocking every ingredient/potion in alchemy? Every enchantment?

You may also want to consider maxing out your difficulty level at this point.

The brotherhood quest line is pretty good; I think so far that is the only one i really found sepcial. I'm level 60 and I guess maybe 80% done; just need to finsih up the stormcloak quests and dragon quests (not sure how many are in each line; but I've done 4 or 5 in each; so I think i'm headed for the end).
-
The biggest problem I have with this game (other than the numerous bugs that cause quest items to be left in inventory; quest to not close in quest book; gemoetry bugs; and similar) is it seems totally devoid of emotion. As you progress in the quest line; as soon as the quest is over all it as if they didn't really exist - oh well (for me) this is definitely not a replay game but it did take over 100 hours to get here.

Least with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, which I lump into the same as this game, the best thing to do is completely ignore the main quest line, except to get the first yell, and do everything else and then doing the main line last.

Yeah, I was around 52 when I left it about 10 days ago and I haven't even learned the shout that forces dragons to land. Still on the Goldenglow Estate mission for the thieves - the very first one, only completed the first assignment for DB (killing three people) and just registered at the mage's college. All 50+ levels have come from misc quests and skill increases, and the Companions quests.

How many times can you pointlessly explore the same old Draugr caves?
Some of you guys amaze me. Maybe World of Warcraft is right up your alley if you enjoy repeating the same mundane tasks over and over.

Yup, I've been exploring since I started. Checked last night and I have 250+ locations discovered :p

Been working on enchanting, haven't touched alchemy yet.

Been playing on master since I started.

Other then it was quest related I've never gone back to the same place.

If anyone is looking for a Skyrim challenge, try playing on hardcore mode.

Only save if you need a break. If you die, consider the character permanently dead and start a new one. Fall off a cliff? Killed by guards? Stepped on a trap? Too bad. Be more careful next time.

*blinks* Wow, way for me to pay attention. I didn't know this game had a hardcore mode or are you just suggesting that people "pretend" that it does?

Sounds like a punishment to me but some of you guys would probably love it. Whatever works for you. :)
