I'm going to root my new ETGS2, this weekend. Is there an easy way to root it, similar to Unrevoked for HTC phones? I've got the multi-step procedure with Odin, but wanted to see if there was a simpler method before I did anything.

There's a one-click procedure available for it.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728

EDIT: OK, so not "one" click, but it's automated once you download the package, and it will NOT increase your ODIN flash count NOR will it give you the yellow "I've been rooted!" triangle on the splash screen.

This is just to root.

Remember, if you will actually go ahead and install a custom ROM, you will need to ODIN a kernel like ClockWorkMod or Rogue/CWM, before you can flash any rom.

If all you wanted is to remove/disable CarrierIQ, you can use the autoboot to root and then disable CIQ, and not mess with ODIN/CWM, if you want to stay stock.

You don't need to ODIN anything with this method. The repacked kernels are able to be pushed/flashed via this same method (and I think a couple are actually included in the download)... thus never increasing your ODIN flash count.

This is how I rooted and installed CWM.

Duh. Option C.
I overlooked that there. Looks like there is a kernel included. Nice.
I used Superoneclick to root my E4GT, which is obviously a different procedure. Oh well, go for it OP, let us know how you do.

BTW: I'm using Unnamed ROM 2.0.1 with EL13(NoCIQ) base, Android 2.3.6. Love this ROM, wicked fast, and I hacked the bootanimation successfully. Eitherway, look for EL13 as that is the new base from Samsung without CIQ natively. (Sprint has mandated the removal of CIQ from all phones now.)

I ran the root procedure mETRo suggested and it worked perfectly. :)

Now, I gotta find some good ROMs to try. MIUI is at the top of my list. Any other suggestions?

Should I get rid of this CIQ thing? I saw that option in the root menu.

MIUI does not, and probably will not ever properly support our device. Same goes for Cyanogen.

I use Calks, but it might be giving me GPS issues. I need to do further testing.

For the sake of curiosity, who is rooting purely to eliminate carrier IQ?

Thanks for dashing my hopes! MIUI and CM are two of my favorite ROMs... or were. What is it about them that they don't play well with our phones?

I'll try that Unmamed ROM Leviathan seems to like. I flashed to EL13 as he suggested.

Cyanogen mod has already been ported to the international Galaxy S2. It must be ported to each and every variant to work. Someone is already porting CM7 to the E4GT and is almost complete, minus a few bugs (4G, GPS not working, etc). I bet by January the port will be complete. You can try the current build, which DOES work, very well actually, just minus the incomplete functions.

BTW, There is also a MIUI port (also incomplete), that works very well, but will never be 100%, because MIUI is a "service" or something... Cool to flash on your device and play with though.

I did.
But I should have done this much earlier. I am now addicted to hacking android. Even rooted 3 of my co-workers phones this week, just cause. I flashed my phone about 10 times this weekend just testing out different ROMS and Kernels. Fun. Customizing is where it gets real interesting. I love it

Unnamed ROM is the single best ROM for this phone, hands down. The best battery life and performance bar none.

I kept the EK02 radio, as that seems to work best for my phone, but am running the new Unnamed ROM with the EL13 base and it's been nothing short of fantastic.

Okay, now that we've got our E4GT devices all rooted and running Unnamed, onto another question. Why the hell does it take so long to charge these things? I plugged mine in at 69% and 3.5 hours later it's only at 75%. I did some googling and this seems to be a common complaint. Any solutions?

Whoa man! That ain't right.
Are you plugging in through USB? I'd say it charges half of what you get from an outlet. Even so, that still doesnt sound right, unless you were messing with it the whole time... Here's is my charge from last night, full charge after 3 hrs or something: (actually I just noticed I didnt let it finish charging, oh well had to go to work)

I've never seen it charge slow, even through USB. Something can't be right, has it always done that?

Anyway, while I'm taking screenys, might as well show you this:

So you can load something like Go Launcher on top of unnamed, makes a slick interface. (Its free on the market) The phone interface is not Go launcher, but the phone theme from the ROM New Senzation. I ripped it out of that ROM and injected it into the unNamed zip. (You cant theme the native phone/sms/email, it must be flashed.) That's also how to modify the boot animation. It's not overly complicated, but alot CAN go wrong if the file structure isn't correct. Sometimes you'll flash and the ROM refuses to load. Its pretty much a brick there, gotta ODIN the stock ROM and root all over again.

Thats my boot animation. It kicks into icecreamsandwich animation once its done "reading". Its not reading anything, just animated pictures, but boy does it look cool. I gotta say, it was definitely worth the trial and error with everything, learned alot and totally made my phone the coolest shit. bling bling :D
BTW, I found everything just scouring the XDA forums. There is just so much information out there, so many people making stuff, its truly endless what you can do with a rooted ROM, just from what you find. Especially if you are bold enough (have the time...) to rip other ROMs and combine them to yours. Its freakin awesome.

Very cool stuff! I did some checking and found a lot of similar complaints about slow charging with the E4GT. I had mine charging through my Macbook Pro. I'll see how fast it takes when charging via wall charger.

I use ADWLauncher. It seems a bit more capable than Go. Here's my current home screen...

Ah good, you already got ADW.
I dig that one too, haven't played enough to see which one I like more, but it wont matter with Home Switcher. You can load multiple and switch the launchers on the fly. I actually ripped the app from another ROM, i assume its on the market. (Home Switcher for Froyo)

BTW, just to test, I completely killed my battery and then charged it after turning back on. (The phone was not "off")

2 hours, maybe less? from 0 to 100%. I believe there is something really wrong with your phone. Have you tried A/C charging yet?

It's the stock charger... the output from it is very low compared to say HTC chargers which charge at 1 amp, as opposed to most Samsung chargers which charge at .6 to .75 amps.

Hmmm... must be my phone. I've had it plugged into a wall charger (my HTC charger) for almost 2 hours. In that time it's gone from 74% to 96%. Not good.

Any of you having the LOS "loss of signal" problem? It's happened at least twice each day I've had my E4GT. Every time, I have to pull the battery to re-establish the signal. Apparently, the EG30, EK02, EL13, etc. updates were supposed to fix the error, but none have worked. I looked up this issue over at Sprint.com. According to the comments left by other E4GT users, there is no fix and Sprint/Samsung have no intention of doing anything else about it.

Between LOS and my slow charging problem, I'm losing patience with this phone.

Every Droid I've owned has charged TERRIBLY slow through USB. AC works like normal though.

My first phone was fixed by EK02, my current one got fixed by EL26.

I also had slow charging for about a month, then it just went away.
