Steam 2011 Holiday Sale is here!!

I almost feel sorry for the person who wins the Grand Prize of every Steam game. All those hundreds if not thousands of games you will never have time to play, but will probably have to pay taxes on. If the prize value is based on the full regular Steam set price of each game, then it could easily exceed $100,000 which could all end up being counted as taxable income... ouch!

Or you could just not report it.

Even if it was free DNF would still end up costing people like me who have a maximum monthly bandwidth cap. So I would want to be paid before I would even consider downloading it.

Is the Witcher 2 at 23.00 the lowest you guys think it will get ?

I wouldn't pay that if I were you. At least, I won't pay that price. Amazon had it for 16 multiple times. Steam needs to get with the program.

I recommend Orcs Must Die! to anyone who hasn't played it, especially for $3.74.

*absolutely* seconded!! -And can also recommend the DLC too!
(mine's showing 3 packs even though I paid for 2? bonus eh!)

Almost bit on the last sale....but decided to DL the demo at the last minute.
Got so tied up enjoying the demo that I missed buying it on sale. >.<

Definitely did not miss it this time! (still have a couple hours left to buy for those procrastinators out there like myself)

Based on what I'm reading if you DO manage to get 7 pieces of coal you should not select your game until January First, because you will stop getting more coal at that point. All unused coal at the end goes into selecting the grand prize winner. So you need to decide which is more important to you: grabbing a game that was already discounted that you did not buy or having a better shot at winning one of 2000 prizes that get you at least the Valve pack or perhaps half or more of your wishlist.

I believe Valve will cover this as part of the grand prize?

The winner is solely responsible for any taxes applicable to the prizes. The winner of the Grand Prize will be additionally awarded a one-time “true up” payment from Sponsor based upon U.S. income taxes owed by the winner.

don't see anything worth buying so far :( some good deals but have a lot of it already

Don't bother entering into the valve grand prize, 2000 prizes out of the tens of millions of steam users is nothing, it is like trying to win the lottery. Also there are tons of people especially TF2 players who farm stuff with multiple steam accounts as well as many probably just trying to make accounts for this.

Also I have no clue what is going on I have multiple steam accounts and some of them have 4 items today, others only have 2. You can trade coal though so you can stack them together.

Is Lego Batman as kiddie as it looks?

Its fun. Some of the puzzles are frustrating. Getting to 100% will probably take someone who is older to do. No way little kids could figure out some of it.

I didn't get my gift for the achievement in Orcs Must Die at first...When I first looked all I had was the 50% off coupon. I checked later and it showed up, though.

All I've gotten so far is coal. (2 lumps so far)
No "gifts" per se.

Also, anyone know if the CSS "Valve Gift Grab 2011" achievement has anything to do with this?? (as I got it on the 19th when I wasn't even aware of the steam sale being live)

Is Lego Batman as kiddie as it looks?

Definitely kiddie, but still a good time. If you have children or young relatives to play it with, it's a blast (along with the rest of the Lego-themed adventure games). Obviously not related to the Steam sale, but if you sign up for OnLive on a mobile device (iOS/Android), you can play this game for free if you just want to try it out.

This would in fact be an interesting case right here

YAY I won! Wait I have to pay $25,000 in taxes because my income increased by $100,000? FUCK THAT!

I don't understand the tax thing....it's not a cash prize, it's not even anything real and you're not authorized to resell it.

I bet it's great and I would enjoy it. This particular sale is over but I'll get it the next go-round ... I have such a huge backlog as it is there is no rush. My wife will probably like it since she likes puzzle games.

Agreed. Portal 2 is truly one of the most accomplished games of the year for the PC. The production values, acting, humor, are really standard-setting.

A nice new feature in Steam is that now one can hold on to the gift to deliver at a later date.

Yeah, I was disappointed when I saw this. I expected at least a flat $20. I guess I'll be waiting longer to pick this up.

I guess I deserve a south park style penalty for not reading all the terms and conditions. If the true up payment covers the taxes on winning the games as well as the additional funds being paid (think of a graph on a curve reaching a limit), then it actually is a good prize and as for the Mad Hatter, YES! That is exactly what happens. Quite a few people who have won non-monetary, but still valuable prizes like classic or custom cars, in raffles and other contests have had to either sell the prize or take out a loan to cover the tax debt incurred.

What? How so?

I think this is the related line(s) in the event details:

The winner is solely responsible for any taxes applicable to the prizes. The winner of the Grand Prize will be additionally awarded a one-time “true up” payment from Sponsor based upon U.S. income taxes owed by the winner.

A true-up payment means the sponsor will pay the tax balance. Therefore haters gonna hate and the grand prize winner is gonna have a truck full of games without owing anything

Guys, don't forget to put at least 10 games in your wish list. It's required to win the prizes for the contest.

At the risk of being called bratty, these sales do suck so far. But it's only Day 2 so hopefully I'll see Skyrim on sale... one can dream.

For anyone who enjoyed Portal 2, I'm going to plug the 4-whole-games Oddboxx for $3.74. I cannot express enough how great of a deal this is.

-Humor
-Good puzzles
-Fun gameplay
-Creative universe
-Creative characters
-Atmosphere

Damn. I missed it yesterday, otherwise I would've bought Portal 2. Hope there's a repeat day at the end.

How does anyone not already own Portal and Portal 2? Those games are so good that we should be forced to install them.
