Dell U3011 coming soon.

congrats on the sick setup nightrain

i personally use sRGB...yes I do agree standard preset looks great too....but my eyes have become more comfortable with sRGB colors...because I've been using other sRGB colored monitors (HP ZR24w).

Now every time I put my U3011 in standard, i feel like the colors are very over powering....funny thing is, at the beginning of the year, when I had my first U3011, I thought standard was perfect...and sRGB way too dull
I received my U3011 last week. I ordered it on Cyber Monday from Dell Canada for only 1049$. Rev A05 / Oct 2011

I use the sRGB preset all the time. I installed the U3011 sRGB ICC profile from the TFT Central website. The colors are already calibrated. I have a Nikon D5100 camera and the JPEG files are in sRGB mode also. The color matching is perfect. And no backlight bleeding.

At least, I found the right monitor! Because I tried already the new Samsung S27A850D with their new PLS technology... The AG coating is perfect but unfortunately, the PLS monitors produce heavy backlight bleeding. So I didn't keep this monitor. See for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtAEktzM4M8

Also, the pixels are bigger on the 30" monitor so it's much more easier to read the text on the screen.

was just curious. what do u guys set your aspect ratios at? I believe the default setting is fill, but I use the native res on games, windows, everything...so would it be best toleave it at 1:1 to make sure the image is not scaled at all, so I can preserve the highest quality?

i'm not sure if this games any difference...i would like to get input as well from an expert

but as far as i know, if the game supports 2560x1600, you should be just fine at stock settings and the game will handle the rest

Yes, the default setting is fill, but for best image quality, 1:1 is preferred, depending on the the image original resolution; i.e., if the image resolution is less than the monitor native resolution, you will see either (1) black bars for 1:1 or (2) lower image quality for fill.

You are lucky :D Dell factory calibration QC is horrible (including the panel uniformity QC). My factory calibrated white points are way off. I have to recalibrate using the service menu to get it right, at least at the center of the monitor. White point at the periphery is still way off because of tinting issue (the lower right is warmer than the upper left) :(

I tested a couple of games at 1920x1200 using fill. Mostly because I forgot to change them to 2560x1600 since I've been using my 2407wfp for so long. I was surprised at how good a job this monitor did with a non-native res. It did better than when I had to run a lower res on my 2407wfp.

What brightness level do you guys use? The default 50 is way too bright for me. I tried 8 for a while but I'm using 12 right now and it seems perfect. I'm using the Standard preset and only changed brightness, it looks great. Just wondering if it could look better.

i'm using stock 50 but using the sRGB preset...stock 50 and standard is way too over powering for my eyes....but the thing is, my eyes have gotten comfortable from using other sRGB monitors....and sRGB = true colors

earlier this year, before I used other sRGB monitors, I thought the standard preset & 50 brightness looked fine on my U3011

I've been testing out sRGB this past 30 mins or so with 50 brightness and I really like it. You are right, the colors are real. I looked back at some vacation and they looked amazing. I'll likely stick with this.

The Standard preset is not factory calibrated by Dell. Dell calibrates only the sRGB and Adobe sRGB from factory. I would avoid the Standard preset unless you do your own calibration. I would suggest using sRGB for most people. Use Adobe RGB only if you need to work in Adobe RGB color space; i.e., you are using color managed applications with Adobe RGB color space. Also do you own calibration if you do any color managed/critical work. Dell factory calibration QC is terrible. Delta E < 5.0 is not acceptable for color critical work. You need, at the very least, delta E < 2.0 or better.

As for brightness, depending on the ambient light of your surrounding and your desired luminance for a particular application, I find that 2-8 works pretty well for low light (night) and 10-15 works pretty well for daylight (indoor). Again, this is very subjective and depends greatly on the ambient light of your surrounding. I would suggest adjust the brightness to the level that your eyes feel comfortable if you don't have a calibrator. Brightness adjustment should not affect the color accuracy, but note that Dell brightness adjustment is nonlinear. I use different brightness settings for day and night and constantly adjust it as needed.

You can use the settings found below if you don't have a calibrator:

Is there any reason to buy this straight from Dell over another retailer? IE do all the same warranties apply, etc?

I just received the u3011 as well, purchased on Cyber Monday with an extra 2 year warranty for 1349 including tax. Not sure if the extra warranty was a good idea but we'll see! The monitor was built in Mexico in October 2011 and was an A05 revision with NO dead pixels.

I've never done any colour settings for monitors so I have question:

I'm a bit of a n00b to changing monitor settings... what do they mean when they have the custom profile RGB values? When I select custom profile in my monitor I then have to choose RGB values for Gain, Offset, Hue, Saturation but they only have one set of numbers on the TFT site. Or would those custom numbers be only for that one monitor as they're all different and I should stick with the sRGB profile? Should I install the Dell U3011 - sRGB.icc as well?

Also, what tests should I do to ensure the monitor is in good condition and has no extreme backlight fading etc (other than the black background test which I already did)? What does everyone else do when they get a new monitor?

The monitor comes precalibrated in the sRGB and Adobe RGB modes, but Dell factory calibration is hit-and-miss with very bad QC. Use those RGB values and icc provided by TFT Central only if your monitor comes badly calibrated and you don't have a calibrator. Those RGB values reported by TFT Central are gain values. Ideally, you should calibrate the monitor using a calibrator and generate an icc specified to your monitor with an average delta E < 2.0 if you are doing color critical work. Average delta E < 5.0 (as chosen by Dell) is not acceptable for color critical work. Yes, stick with sRGB unless you need to work in Adobe RGB color space.

You can try the following:

I have my brightness set to 0 and contrast at 48 in a mostly light controlled room.

Decreasing the brightness significantly seems to be the norm as the default brightness is like looking at the sun.

I just want to come in here and say, this monitor is friggen huge!

I went to a Microcenter the other day and saw one of these displayed. I have never seen this monitor in person before but I've heard many many things about this monitor and this monitor is gigantic! I've only seen these monitors in pictures that you guys post but seeing one up front is just insane. The display is so big and the resolution is so high, there is really too much desktop real estate. I wonder how those people do it with 3x 30".

That's all.

oh i saw that deal, but i thought it was only for canadians?

expect the price to hit USA soon...at least hopefully...I've seen it go for around $1100 + tax every few months from Dell...but they are long over due for an $1100 shipped deal...haha

this is in reference to Americans

What should the average ratio be for Brightness / Contrast? Right now I'm 30/35. I'm not sure what is the proper way to measure it? I have it in sRGB preset mode.

Also, do any of you think it's worth paying someone to calibrate it with hardware calibration? I don't have a calibrator but was thinking it might be worth paying someone to come in and do it.

I ordered one on Sunday from Dell Canada, it was $999. After taxes, $1108, free shipping. I can't wait to get it.

I did this and got the extra warranty for $110 or something. Figured it's worth it with a monitor this expensive.

I also have dell u3011 and now I spoiled lol. I can't probably never go back to TN panels.
Only con is that I ended up spending more money on GPUs because of 2560 x 1600 resolutions :(
2gb vram is a must for dell u3011.

I am seriously debating on getting rid of my Eyefinity setup of three Dell 2709W's 27" monitors, and go back to one 30" panel.

I used to own a 30" Apple Cinema Display before my Eyefinity setup, and the picture clarity and quality was so sharp and clear, I miss that. And the new Dell U3011 is even better than the old Apple 30". I mainly play WoW, and Eyefinity is cool for immersion, but doesn't really add that much to help me in the game due to the side monitors stretching and distorting the game image so much. That's my biggest gripe with Eyefinity, the stretched image on the two sides gets annoying.

It's probably cheaper in the long run to buy a calibrator than paying someone to do the calibration. I would recommend doing calibration at least once a month if you are doing color-critical work because the color and luminance will shift as the monitor ages. Take a look at X-Rite calibrators.

Question for the resident hardforum antiglare experts- is the aantiglare coating as bad/noticeable on the U3011 as it is on the U2711?

Hard to say unless you see it and use it for a few hours. The smaller one has a smaller dot pitch so it would be more noticeable in general.

Has anyone had issues with their U3011 image becoming corrupted? I thought it was my video cards, but even the OSD was corrupted. I plugged my laptop in over displayport with the same issue, but then after 5-10 minutes it went back to normal.

When the image gets corrupted part of the picture displays on the wrong side of the screen and everything goes "fuzzy" if that makes sense. Almost as if the resolution was lowered.

Dell support is going to send a replacement, but it's still a hassle, and now I'm playing monitor roulette.

yeah that sounds like a bad monitor...and it sucks going on the monitor roulette...but at least they keep giving you another one until your happy...thats the good news....bad news, alot of labor disconnecting/reconnecting/packging the monitor if you have to go thru a couple

I just got my U3011 yesterday and I am using it with my 2011 MacBook Pro and my gaming rig (in sig). So my big question is this: is there a way to have the U3011 auto-select the input that is active when the display is sleeping? I have the PC connected to DVI-1 and the Mac to the DP. What I want to happen is when I wake either machine I want the U3011 to recognize that input and turn on. Right now it seems that I have to manually select the input to switch them, even from sleep. Is this something the monitor is capable of doing, or I am going to have to manually switch inputs each time?

Any suggestions for a good desk mount/arm for the U3011? I need to get it up off the desk and the built in adjustments just don't give it enough height.

Purchased the Dell U3011. Love the size.

Rev 05
Manufactured Nov 2011
Made in Mexico

No dead pixels. Don't love the antiglare coating but I can live with it.

My question is with respect to tinting. I notice on an all white screen, the left side of the screen appears more 'grey' than 'white'. This is most noticeable on the screen test that has a black screen with 5 white boxes (one in each corner and one in the center).

The center white box is nice and white, the lower and upper left hand screen white boxes are greyish, the right hand screen white boxes are white. Anything I can do to correct this? Not sure I want to play the return and replace game.

Many thanks,
Detox

i have the same monitor as you...rev 5 and nov 2011...i don't notice the whites being too gray if you ask me...everything looks like their "suppose too"...at least when compared to other monitors

have you tried running it in sRGB preset? thats the most accurate and true color setting, even though it might look a little dull at first...maybe give that a shot before playing the return game...lol
