I don't know much about Louis C.K. but, after reading this, I've decided I really like this guy. If only we could get more entertainers to do this, the world would be a better place. ;)

I have a profit around $200,000 (after taxes $75.58). This is less than I would have been paid by a large company to simply perform the show and let them sell it to you, but they would have charged you about $20 for the video. They would have given you an encrypted and regionally restricted video of limited value, and they would have owned your private information for their own use.

I really like Louis C.K.

His show is one of the best on TV right now.

That's one way to drum up publicity when otherwise no one has even heard of you before. Nice marketing ploy.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not. I like a lot of his standup and I haven't watched his shows but I definitely know about him. I think part of the success though is that he already has a good following. If he was completely unknown without anything up on youtube or previous exposure I doubt this would have been as successful.

I think his show is boring, but I agree that Thuleman is either being sarcastic or somehow oblivious to Louis C.K. Best part is, I don't think Louis had even begun his publicity campaign yet judging by the AMA he did on reddit.

Whether its a marketing ploy or not, I think its excellent. I am not even a fan of Louis C.K., but I will probably buy the video just to help support his initiative, and I don't mind shoving a RHP right up the RIAA and MPAA's arses.

The guy is hilarious! No he isn't small either I hadn't heard of him until I saw his show, I did see an advert for his stand up but I missed it (boy was that a bad choice)

I will have to check this article out, if the Non-DRM video is his show or the stand up his show is based on, I will buy them!

Steve, I strongly suggest you investigate Loius CK a bit more. If you don't find him funny, you're probably Taliban.

And I think the best part is, after the necessary tax, he gets to pocket ALL the profit. If he'd gone with a large company they'd have taken a huge chunk out first, leaving him with only a fraction of what he made here.

Louis CK is hilarious, although I found his show to be disappointing and boring. Youtube his stand-ups if you want a good laugh. He is vulgar and profane but usually spot on and usually very funny.

After reading this I bumped him up a few points, even though I already really liked him. Likewise, people get bumped down a few points when I find out they're Scientologists.

He is my second favorite comedian next to Carlin. $5 very well spent, and it is great he was willing to share the process/figures with his fans.

huh? Louis CK is probably one of the hottest comedians around right now. Not quite Dane Cook level, but he's up there.

I don't think he really needs marketing to help him out. His tickets almost sell themselves.

i dont understand the first sentence. "I have a profit around $200,000 (after taxes $75.58)" so he made 200,000 but after taxes he only made $75 ?

I can't believe you just used Dane Cook and comedian in the same sentence. Unless you, yourself, are trying to be comedic. If so, I must admit you appear more talented than Dane Cook. :)

Admittance of ignorance followed by a conclusive statement on any matter is counter-intuitive, and generally will just get you into situations you never wanted to be a part of.

lol I never said that I liked him, but you can't argue his success. He sells out arena's. That's not an easy thing for a comedian to pull off.

Louis C.K has been my favorite comedian for the last 5 year. His delivery is spot on, and he's a fucking genius.

His joke about the Earth in this special is deep and satirical, not to mention hilarious.

He's a comedian. It's a joke.

I heard of the guy buy never saw him. Funny guy, though, now that I check him out on YouTube. Gotta love the guy for his views on DRM, too.

Completely forgot about this.

Bought and downloading now. Will fire this up when I get home to watch it on my HDTV with a tub of popcorn.

Now what we need is an agent or agency that signs up new talent, presents clips free on Youtube for publicity, sells videos of the shows online with no DRM for profit, and leaves out the crappy, money hording entertainment corporations. It would work, and probably get more profit per person than the corporations. However, no fat cat executives that barely know how to manage their way out of a paper bag would be making 7 figure salaries from it. :)

Just FYI:

He produces/writes/edits all the video for his show and special.

Guy is a comedic genius and knows his way with video. He did all the episodes of Louie on his Macbook Pro. Guy has complete creative control of all his material, which is why FX lets him do what he wants because he's a low risk.

Also he hasn't even started on marketing this video publically.

It's all done by word of mouth and reddit.

I had heard of him, never saw his stand-up but it was worth $5 because I supported his method of distribution. It also played fine on my 360 so it was easy to download and sit on the couch and watch. Quality was also equal to or greater than TV quality (h264).

I wonder what the difference was between this method and selling to a TV network and what long-term benefit he would have seen with this versus the TV network. Don't musicians basically not even own their content when dealing with a label? As in, they can't distribute it how they like later on if they are/were bound by a contract while they produced the material?

Doing it this way, at least he has full control over his material though I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Apparently you don't have a sense of humor. :p

His is a COMEDIAN.. hehe

If you're a fan of Louies comedy, check out Jim Jeffries as well. Very very funny dude. I really hope he comes around my neck of the woods sometime in the near future, I'd love to go to one of his shows.

His show is easily one of the best on TV right now. Don't expect a classic comedy show, instead it is an attempt to capture how people really interact. One of the best episodes is when a old comedian friend of his shows up and tells him he is going to commit suicide. He pretty much broke with every cliche script that has been written on the topic of suicide and create something that is much more honest to how people will react in those situations. His comedy routines are funny, but nothing special, his show should be given every award ever invented for cinema.

Did someone really not know about CK and Dane? Seriously. If you are unaware, there is a big ole shitstorm about Dane "stealing" some of CKs material. Happens a lot but when Cook blew up like he did, made a lot of comedians butt hurt jealous.

CK is widely acknowledged as a very top tier stand up by other comedians. Smart guy btw. Hard, hard worker too. You have to be to do as much as he does.

Respect!

Dane Cook "distills" others styles of comedy for the masses. Many comedians do, but it doesn't earn respect among peers.
