RIP STALKER

Stalker was a great game :(, I thought it did well? Why shut down? I mean I heard that the publisher said they didn't think a post apoc world would sell well.....bu the first one did, and then Fallout, etc. Post apoc games ar edoing fine right now, especially if it has zombies in it.

Stalker imo was one of those rare games that just nailed atmosphere so well.

Where you have Metro for the cramped close-quarters which it excels at, Stalker was the open world style game that soaked you in it's atmosphere and made you want to explore the zone.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was definitely one of a kind and is and will be one of my favorite games forever. I am very sad that there will be nothing further, but maybe we will get lucky.

For those of you that don't know, a group started developing the original source code from Shadows of Chernobyl (everything that was cut/left out) and looks to finally be releasing in the near future (it has been literally years). The project is called Lost Alpha and can be found at dezowave.com

Projects like that give me hope for further interaction with the zone. I absolutely love the story and environment that this game provides. The mods that added to the original game totally enhanced the experience and hopefully someone out there sees how much value this product has and will pick up where it was left off.

I hope maybe the Metro 2033 guys can pick up this license or even merge the two franchises in a way. They are both based on classic Russian novels and are very similar in many ways. Sad to say it but no console deal is probably what killed Stalker in today's day and age.

I own the original stalker, clear sky and call of pripyat and was really looking forward to Stalker 2.

Nothing beats the atmosphere of stalker. Walking through dark undergound bunkers with night vision, your modded weapon at the ready, waiting for a bloodsucker to jump out at any moment... nothing beats that tension.

I really hope some other game studio picks up the game.

4A games could definitively pick up STALKER and continue, as some of them worked on SoC,
but I'm not sure I'd want to see the result.

The only one who would go all ballz out would be Bohemia.
That and understanding of everything Slavic pretty much defines the single viable choice.

Im sure Ukrainians and Russians would be mighty pissed though

Maybe I'm an unpatriotic ass but it was nice to play a game where not everyone in it was a stereotypical American archetype. It was nice to see some ethnicity.

This is very sad news. I thoroughly enjoyed STALKER. I hope others pick up the torch in one form or another and go out of their way not to consolize it.

This. Although i'm gutted that Stalker 2 might not come to fruition there is always Lost Alpha which is shaping up to be one hell of a good mod that all fans of Stalker should be aware of. S.T.A.L.K.E.R:The Faction War mod is another ongoing great mod that fans should be aware of:

A very disappointing news indeed.

I'm almost certain that one of the big publisher would pick up the franchise and revive it, it always happens. Big franchise like Duke Nukem, Silent Hill and so on gets picked up and develop by another developers when their original one shuts its door.

But the downside is, as those examples out there shows, this usually never ends well. So unless someone would pick up the franchise as well as members of its former developing team to finish STALKER 2, I'd rather not see that game at all.

But yeah, it'll get pick up by another publishing company sooner or later.

publishers don't give a shit about fans. it is all about the expected money they can make and that means consoles. I think stalker 2 was being redesigned for the console market but likely GSC ran out of money sort of like 3drealms.

I've been looking forward to Lost Alpha as well. Dezowave did a good job with their Priboi's Story conversion mod,and LA is supposed to be much bigger and ambitious.
By the way,has anyone noticed that none of the GSC site links work anymore? Not a good sign.

This is very sad news, I have not finished SoC or CoP yet, but love just loading it up and enjoying the atmosphere of the game for an hour or two. I think I will finish CoP tonight to pay my respects lol.

all that wide-open exploring and excellent mod support with no DLC was really annoying. Would be nice if they would just produce a more streamlined game. Sometimes it was confusing figuring out what to do next, because you had this "log" that had more than one thing in it. I wish I just had someone with a marker that said "follow" over their head so I knew where to go. . .

WTF is this, You need to use your brain a little bit in this game. Definitively not for COD fanboyish. You have few good walkthrough on the web if it was so hard to figure what to do next..

What happen to those independent Russians guys that was trying to put the 3 games maps together in a mod ?

you got trollololololed.

Ugh, well... at least I will not need to worry about the next one living up to my expectations.

On the plus side, the series will now remain untouched by the affects of consolization...

I guess I will just have to stick with the Stalker mods.

I didn't even play the game for the story anyways. I played for the immersion of it. The mods are a neverending way of keeping the game fresh

The more I think about it,the less I like the idea of someone else taking over the franchise. 4A would be the obvious choice, given the connection some of their people had with Shadow of Chernobyl. But while I'll give Metro points for an imaginative story, and the fact that graphically they didn't cut corners for the PC version,it falls far short in the gameplay
department compared to the STALKER games because at it's heart it's another linear shooter. It may have been in this that they made concessions to the consoles, and it's the last thing I'd want to see happen to STALKER. Better that the series ends now than that.

i've never played stalker. is it any good? is it a open world rpg like skyrim/fallout?

In a way, yes. Plenty of guns & mutants in this one. Lots of eerie situations. I never got that feeling in FO3 or FO:NV. The storyline is awesome, too.

STALKER series > FO3/FO:NV

It is an open world game, but it is not an RPG. I don't know why people keep calling it that, but it isn't (maybe because it cops the "player's character has amnesia" trope so common to RPG stories?) The only player customization is your weapon/armor/item loadout, which admittedly is a pretty significant aspect of gameplay (and also quite fun, when you finally find your favorite gun or suit, which is probably different for everyone). In the two standalone expansions, you're given increasing freedom in upgrading your weapons and armor, rather than just using up and discarding them like in the first game.

Buy the first game, Shadow of Chernobyl. You will enjoy many hours in "the zone".

It's a very good game, with a boat-load of mods by now. You won't have to suffer the first release bugs like I did.
I enjoyed it as much as any I every played. Fairly open world, beautiful graphically, excellent atmosphere, lots of loot to search for. Well designed.

The second game was too difficult for my tastes......I've yet to finish it......but it was also very good.

Actually the games were very demanding of GPUs when released, but the current GPUs should run the game to it's fullest.

I have only played Call of Pryprat, but I would call it an FPS with RPG elements. It is definitely not a strict RPG.....

Anyway, on the topic of the franchise ending, that is sad news. Lucky for me, I still have 2games to play, but I was really looking forward to an updated version.

I had an idea for artifacts/guns that would have been pretty cool IMO. There would be a gun that could use artifacts as ammo, and each one would have different qualities such as the type of ammo and the damage that was caused (heat damage, electical, etc.). So, artifacts would have two different sets of properties, one for use in armour and one for ammo. You could have certain enemies that are only vulnerable to certain types of attacks and standard ammo wouldn't hurt them. It could have added a new dimension to the game.

Back to STALKER.....It is too bad that a creativity isn't rewarded like it should be in electronic entertainment... sad news indeed.

It's an open world with RPG elements, and in my opinion far better than Fallout. In fact,I think Fallout 3 was patterned after it. But Fallout has flaws I attribute to concessions to the consoles, and STALKER has a more serious tone to it. In sheer size and scope,Shadow of Chernobyl is an absolute masterpiece.

Theres Modern warfare, Classic warfare, scifi etc and then you have Stalker which has a truly unique story and gameplay. I can not bring myself to compare Stalker to anything else.

I think of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games as Oblivion or Skyrim with guns. My only gripe with them is the terrible gun models and bad gun textures. They are some of the worst and most inaccurate I've ever seen in my life.

https://twitter.com/#!/gscstalker/status/146255840310071296 Not looking good but nothing really official yet. Still waiting on the official statement to come out on facebook. I was really anticipating Stalker 2 to come out but looks like that's going to get squashed. Looks like Lost Alpha will be Stalker 2 for the fans. Wish they could give what was finished of Stalker 2 to a team like dezowave and let them finish it for the Stalker community, besides the Stalker community fixed most of the game bugs anyways. If anyone who has played the mod Priboi Story for Stalker SHOC and then played Call of Pripyat, you would know that GSC drawn off of that mod to produce Call of Pripyat. They are very similar. Im kinda disappointed in all this but there is so many mods to play and mods coming out soon that i still have alot of hours to put in the zone.

Thanks for the twitter link.

Looks to me like they are not prepared to give up just yet, but they would need a publisher to pick it up in order to proceed.

And I really hope they would be able to find one. Fingers crossed.

wow....so both GSC's site and the STALKER min-site are both down?

why are those tweets so cryptic? possibly just the language barrier?
If GSC does go under it's very unfortunate for the PC gaming community

Hello MarkedOne, I'm sarcasm. We've never met before.

And what you think the gauss gun is shooting? ,

from wiki : http://stalker.wikia.com/wiki/Gauss_gun

"The rifle was created by one of the research groups operating under "Project #62", which sought to turn artifacts into ammunition for various weapons. Some Stalkers, namely Cardan took part in the creation of the rifle, and you can even find a larger, artillery-scale Gauss cannon, though you unfortunately cannot fire it. "

if you remember the huge artilry -scale like they call it , was in the lab under the place where you find an helicopter and a lot of electrical poles

the artifacts where a big part (at least for me) of the game.

they allow you to increase your speed, strength, stamina, radiation resistance etc..

Maybe its all a ploy and the big announcement is something like this

"Just in, The release date of STALKER 2 will be april 2012 and will have some ubber feature!"

Terrible gun models? Are we playing different games?

They have to partially alter them due to not having licenses for them though. Just get a mod to fix it...

Haha yep, that gun and the functional gauss rifle you can use in the games (Except CS, which uses a very early prototype of the gauss and doesnt hurt people but is basically an EMP blast) are powered by encapsulated electro anomolies. Theres two ammo types in COP, dont remember if theres one or two in SHOC. In COP its either manufactured batteries that dont use artifacts, or the zone-made rounds that hold electro anomoly to charge and fire. The manufactured ones might also contain anomoly power, but they never make it clear. The only ammo that specifically says it are the ones made in the zone by stalkers.

I would much rather have rolled the giant gauss rifle out on its train car and used that on people :p

Apparently you've never actually seen some of these weapons in other games or in real-life. They look like shit.

Do any of the mods alter the models so they aren't all left handed? Do they now eject brass on the correct side of the weapon? It's also sad that a mod has to be downloaded and installed to fix them. And BTW, it's not a licensing problem. Their likenesses are pretty much public domain since they can be seen out in public. You can see them carried by law enforcement agencies around the globe, in news reports, gun stores, etc. Licensing the correct names is another matter which they seem to have taken care of because many of them have the correct names in the game. The Desert Eagle, the HK USP, etc. are all correctly named.
