Help me pick a laptop

Hi, my brother asked me for help with a laptop purchase, I'm a bit out of the loop and I hope that you can help me with this.

He likes thinkpad computers and prefers the ultraportable ones. He is prepared to pay up to the maximum of 1500$, but he only wants what he needs so my guess is we can keep it around 1000$ or less.

He's going to use it to browse the internet, p2p, general school work and watching HD material. He wants to be able to connect the computer to his hdtv via hdmi and play videos trough it.

Can you help me pick one for him?

This is what Id go with, its about 1200 but it gives you great power latest gen and the ability to play most games out today. There Solid laptops. Also Hardocp has great Asus mods if your in need of help.

No need for games, It only needs to be powerful enough to handle HD material.

Thinkpad X220? You need a Displayport -> HDMI adapter.

+1, I have the x220t convertible tablet PC, wonderful machine. 4lbs, great battery life and screen and fast.

Thinkpad X220 -- awesome computers all around. Grab one with an i5 and you're set for everything you want, plus exceptionally high quality build. It's a 12.5" so it's quite portable. I think you should be able to get one for under $1k as well.
