I played with a mac that had parallels installed. it was in the "coherence" mode or whatever where it makes windows and osx seem seemless. It was really nice. Mainly I want the mac for the touchpad (I love scrolling with it) and I would use parellels for my windows only programs. Every windows pc I have used has a crap touchpad.

If they come out with a 15" mac book air I will get that.

I've had problems with parallels - I got a beach ball of death, had to force quit parallels, and it screwed my VM image and could never get it to start up again :(

wow that's never happened to me.

the trackpad on apple laptops is so nice... apples are overpriced, but design-wise most PC laptops are garbage. you're not going to find a PC 15" laptop with specs like the macbook pro and under 1 inch thick.

is it worth it? probably not, and OS X lion is kind of garbage, but if you've got disposable income, there's worse things to spend it on.

As soon as my G73 dies (or next summer, which will probably come first), I'll be getting a MBA 11". I've been wanting another Mac for a while, and a MBA looks like a good way to not spend a butt load but still get the usage/usability I want out of it.

First I gotta build a media server though...

If you use parallels, please use it with an SSD. It's so slow on a 5400rpm drive.

The latter sentence is why the first three words are wrong.

I finally broke down and purchase my first mac a few months ago. I'd been talking about getting one for years, but never had the money. It is pretty sweet. I'm using VMware Fusion 4 instead of Parallels and it too has a seamless integration interface so Windows programs appear as regular apps in OS X.
I say, just break down and get one already. You won't regret it.

i also want to get one, but now i don't have enough money for it. i will buy it later... a good device..

I've ran both VM's on my 2010 MBP nottaproblemo, right now sticking with fusion for the time being, just seems a little smoother in overall operation. Go for it :)

I just ordered my iMac on black Friday. It was on sale for a hundred buckos off so I pulled the trigger. Apple usually doesn't do sales, so I figured that's about as good as it gets. My company gave me a macbook but it's "locked" - I can't install software or customize anything without IT dept. approval. Looking forward to having one I can actually have fun with:). So yeah, if you want one then get it. They're worth the money for the design elements alone IMHO.

I'm also going to get a MBP pretty soon here, I think. As others have said, I know that they are more expensive than their Windows counterparts, but the trackpad, keyboard, and screens are just so sweet. It is easily the best trackpad of any laptop I've ever felt.

Even when I try out other laptops like the Envy and feel the trackpad, it just feels cheap and plastic-y.

I don't own a mac, but this was my thought too. After having a problem with my iPad 2 and dealing with the genius bar, I see some kind of Mac in my future.

Do it! I bought a Macbook Pro and love it! Actually posting this from my custom Hackint0sh, love em' both!

before i didn't like those small profile notebooks this mba, but i guess that now that optical drives are dying, they are pretty interesting.

I've switched back to windows for my main machine(was a hackint.) but I still want a mac replacement for my 5 year old MBP(15"/ 2.16 C2D/2gb/120gb 5400rpm/dead optical drive:rolleyes:). a 15" air would be sweet, but if not sooner or later I'm gonna break down and get a refurbed 2011 15" mbp or a 13" air.

And 8gb ram. Running an OS within an OS eats memory and as cheap as DDR3 is right now there's no excuse not to upgrade.

Yes, I could not agree more. More than 4GB is essential if you're going to be needing a lot of RAM in your VM while running a decent amount of programs in OSX.

On a daily basis I run a Windows 7 VM with 3GB of RAM allocated to it for work (85% of that is normally used up) On my Mac I run a chat client, browsers, itunes, and maybe a few other programs.

Its tough to find a non-apple laptop that isn't plastic crap.

OSX Lion is fine. OSX works well with touchpads. Not so great for desktops.

While I don't disagree that apple notebooks are built well it's easier then you think to find a well made notebook if you look at pro level notebooks from dell, hp and lenovo... Most consumer notebooks are nothing but cheap plastic shells, but the consumer demanded a cheap notebook so they got it.

I agree - it's the touchpad and display for me. Even if I find a nice looking $1500 laptop with components that blow Apple out of the water, the trackpad still feels cheap and plastic-y. The trackpad for Macbook Pros are unmatched imo.

+1 for Macbook Pro
I used to review laptops and went through about 3 dozen different models.Very few could even come close to Apple's build quality. I think it's worth the extra investment. Now as far as desktops go I'd much rather build :)

Not my place but are wireless mice hard to use these days?

Do I smell trolling? Of course wireless mice aren't hard to use these days. Duh. But most people don't want to carry around a mouse with their laptop.

For those saying you can't find a decent PC to match a Macbook on specs, style, and thickness, what about the new HP Envy 15.

http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/envy/envy15.html

Styling pretty similar to a mac, can upgrade to a 1080p IPS panel, SB quad, AMD 7690m which is as we now know a rebadged 6770m probably with slightly higher clocks, and theres some coupon codes floating around out there so you can get it all for about 1100 bucks instead of 2500.

P.S. not trying to start a flame war just giving an option for those who say they can't find any.

I haven't used one of these newer Envy units, but the originals felt like a cheap Apple knockoff. From my experience the only notebooks that were on par are the similarly priced Sony high end notebooks.

While they are sexy and powerful I still think the trackpad would be an issue.

Well if that's an important feature to you then I guess a Macbook is worth it. Personally a higher quality trackpad isn't worth over a thousand dollars to me, but hey I'm not knocking macbooks they certainly have some stuff going for them.

Or buy a regular laptop/desktop and make a hackintosh for 1/3 the price.

Ive got an envy 17 (2010 model), and while im generally pleased with it I have to say its a far cry from a MBP.

Good luck making a Hackintosh laptop that isn't a piece of garbage. Desktops can be ok though if you pick out all the hardware yourself to ensure compatibility.

Definitely not high-end dell. Those words don't even go together.

Maybe high-end sony notebooks. But, you'll pay just as much or more.
