I play allot of FPS, Went with a Razer mouse and RAT Pad, Man what an improvement in game play, So, A gaming keyboard is next. Been reading on Mechanical keyboards, But whats the difference in Cherry , Blacks and so on?

Different switches feel different. There are tons of sites where you can read yourself. Or some one on the forum can just repeat what are in those guides.

I agree. I know mechanical keyboards are supposedly the keyboards of the gods, but I don't think there all that great. I have a Black Widow Uluimate and a Logitech G510 and switch out every few weeks just for a change of pace but always seem to use the Logitech more. I just like the way it feels better. Don't get me wrong, the Razer is cool as shit and I do like it but I do prefer the Logitech more. That's not to say I like rubber domes better than mechanical, just that I like this rubber dome better. I've tried a couple other mechanical boards but not a bunch more so there may be one out there I like better but I haven't found it yet.

I guess the long winded point I'm trying to make is that different people will like different things so try to buy from some place that has a flexible return policy so you can try different ones if you need to.

As for performance, a keyboard is a keyboard. A $200 gaming keyboard will work just as well as a $20 one. The extra macro keys are cool but I've yet to use more than a few of them in only a couple games.

The difference in feel between a logitech keyboard and a 5 dollar keyboard is small.

razer black widow is bottom of the barrel mechanical keyboard, in terms of quality. but should still be a significant difference for most people.

OP do some research and come to the conclusion that you should get a filco or leopold brown tenkeyless.

sorry to break it to you but mechanical keyboards will NOT improve your FPS gameplay, no matter the switch and the layout, anyway here's a guide http://www.gamersedge.co.uk/2011/09/mechanical-switch-guide/

I don't see how this could possibly be true. Mainly the "no matter the switch and the layout" part. Provided you could find a non staggered board, maybe that w directly over the s could make the difference. In general moving keys around on a board really allows the opportunity to relieve strain. Your statement really is just nonsense in that regard. There is no question that altering key layout presents the opportunity to decrease or increase performance.

Additionally, everyone seems agreed going from black switch to blue switch results in noticeably increased typing performance. I don't see why there isn't a chance an improvement in performance could be seen for similar reasons for an FPS gamer. Maybe the better rebound of switches/only having to press half as far is all it will take. This really isn't unreasonable.

Well the thing is though, mechanical keyboards don't really have a different layout than membrane keyboards, with the possible exception of losing the numpad (tenkeyless), so there is no real change there

I think the main gaming benefit in getting a mechanical keyboard would be that most mechanicals support high KRO or even NKRO, which could be an advantage in certain gaming situations, depending on what you currently use. Only a few (or none?) membrane keyboards have high KRO.

But by and large, "high end" or "pro" gamers probably use mechanicals because they prefer the feel of the keys, and/or like the other non-competitive benefits of mechanicals (easily interchangeable keycaps, higher switch durability, typically better build quality, etc).
