Hey Gents,

Quick question for ya, I had to RMA my 680i board back to EVGA and since the board is so old they are offering me a 790i for replacement, however this means I have to get ddr3 to replace my ddr2.

The issue is all the ddr3 is now low voltage for the i3/i5/i7 series processors, and EVGA tech support said I need to find 1.8v-2.3v ddr3 ram to work with the board, however this ram is said to work per EVGAs "supported ram" list...

Being that this is 1.6v memory, do you think I would have an issue getting other memory? I would much rather pay 49 bucks for 8 gigs, but am not sure if it would be compatible. I went from the 680i series to x58 and skipped the 790i series all together in my upgrade path so my knowledge is kinda fuzzy.

If evga says it will work.....i would try it.....

worst case scenario you have to return the ram and go on ebay for the proper ram.....

I am by no means a ram expert but you have to remember those nvidia chipsets are no way as stable as their intel counterparts.....i had 680 and worked on 790's.....but i have to say the 790 is waaaaay more stable.

Since you got a rig already is this a backup? or you going to make a home server or etc?

its a "hard parts lying around and my friend wanted to upgrade from his p4 3.06/ddr400" box :)

It's been a while but if it matters in this case, IIRC, 780i and 790i were picky with memory in general and MUCH moreso with 4 modules. If you can get the right density, I suggest 2 modules if you have the choice.

I have that motherboard as my secondary.

It absolutely hates lower voltage RAM.

It will POST and run internet stuff with Dominator DDR3 1.65V RAM, but any attempt to overclock the board, either RAM or CPU will crash and burn. I tried to do some folding@home with the board, it wouldn't run more than an hour with low voltage RAM. As soon as I replaced it with the Patriot, it ran solid as a rock. The Dominator was fine, it just isn't a good match for that board.
I now use the board for some gaming with dual nvidia cards, and it's quite capable. It runs fine with all the memory slots populated.

I was able to find Patriot DDR3 Gamer brand via Directron. It's 1.8V rated RAM. I bought 4 x 2GB modules and they work really well in this particular board.

I use an old Q6600 OC'd to 3.45 GHz and have the RAM running at spec speed, 1.85V

Hard to find but will work well: http://patriotmemory.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=5&catid=34&prodgroupid=200&id=833&type=1 :)

You might want to ask EVGA if they could trade you a newer board in their RMA inventory, rather that taking the 790i since the RAM is very hard to come by. It would most likely mean upgrading to a S1156 or 1155 CPU, but at least you could buy modern RAM.

They offered me a p55 board, an x58 board, or the 790i. The guy that is buying the hardware from me, he had to get a new PSU and now has to get new ram...he opted for the 790i board because he didn't want to have to get a new cpu.

Ill have to look for that ram if the stuff we ordered from the egg doesnt work out.

That's too bad. The P55 would have been a much better deal all around even if you had to buy a new cpu.

The S1156 CPUs are pretty cheap and the DDR3 that would work in that board is dirt cheap right now.:D
