Hello, pleased to meet you.

I'm working from home as a programmer and my accumulated computer hardware is reaching unreasonable proportions... I got three laptops, five displays, a bunch of keyboards, two big servers and a primary development workstation.

But, it's not adding to any productivity really, it's just wasting space and causing distraction!

Have you been in this situation and done anything about it? Did you get spartan with an iMac, a macbook and called it a day? I tried that but it did not work. The iMac is a huge mirror while the macbook gives me emocuts on my wrists and frankly it's too hot. Subpar hardware!

I returned that setup and am now thinking about an alternative route: a thinkpad x220 for IPS and mobility and a W701ds for display resolution (it got an extra monitor too).

That should be pretty spartan and I'd settle for that (would be cheap too), but I thought I'd just as well ask if anyone had the same problem and hear what you did about it.

If you work from home, why get two laptops? Especially something like the W701ds, just get two nice LCDs instead.

That's my setup for this.

Workstation + 27" + 2007FP in portrait.
Laptop in docking station.

Synergy running between the two.

Works wonderfully.

I suppose if you're using all of those systems on a regular basis, it's worth having them all. I don't work from home, but I have a main desktop and an HP Touchpad at home, and I refuse to get anything else (I live alone) because I don't need/want it sitting around.

However at work, I have three computers. One for e-mails, one for programming and one for shipping and receiving. While I could do all the work on one, I kind of like bouncing back and forth between each task. It let me stretch my legs a little since the machines are in two different locations :)

Spartan meaning sternly disciplined and rigorously simple, frugal, or austere.

Actually he answered your silly question in the most concise fashion possible.

Without context, it's not answering anyone's questions. Can't blame him though, the OP is "working from home as a programmer."

Not vague at all.

For the sake of clarification:

*Original poster states that he/she has too much stuff and has a very cluttered and distracting work area.

*Original poster expresses the desire for a more spartan (see previous definition) workspace to minimize distraction and increase productivity.

*Original poster requests other users to post pictures of their spartan setups. See WalkedAirplane's post as well as other suggestions.

*Profit?

Scrap the extras and just grab a 2-3 way monitor setup on decent system.
Let me clarify you will have only one system!
