WCG Christmas Race 2011

woot made it 2 hours so far and its still going.. i guess i'll be running WCG all month since electricity is dirt cheap in the winter here.. 4 cents a kw.

What are we looking at windows performance wise with an SR2, 16 cores, 3.8 - 4 Ghz?
I'll be getting back stateside from this tour right before christmas, might be good to fire up the SR2 before I sell it
Good to hear that you will be back stateside soon Vaulter!

:) 24 tasks running now to see what this thing can do
Good to hear from you again mashtub! Thats quite the beast of a machine you have there! Thanks for joining the challenge!

So far so good huh? I'll keep my fingers crossed! Also reminds me that maybe I should dust out my machines. :D

i changed the heat sink on my 1090T last night, need to make a reminder to myself. Take plastic covering off base of heatsink before installing. I removed this thing 2 times, temps were over 90c, puzzled until i took it off for the 3rd time and wondered what that writing was on the base of the heat sink,

ha ha you are not the first person to say that here.. there was a guy probably about a year ago going ape shit about how phenom II x4's sucked balls and ran insanely hot and that his xig S1283 heatsink was the worst pos ever made.. calling us all idiots when we suggested crap to fix his problem. went on for about 2 pages til he finally pulled the heatsink off and realized he never removed the plastic cover, best part was the first reply in the thread was that exact suggestion.

FWIW, I generally see about 300-500 MB in use per CEP2 unit. (That's no guarantee it won't ever be higher.)

Speaking of temps, while I haven't tested all work, I have observed HCC to run cooler than most other projects. The Malaria and Leishmaniasis projects run hotter for me - closer to smp folding.

been doing wcg for about a year now...just joined the team. anyone know when gpu processing will be supported?

They don't announce new deadlines for anything. The best you get are tidbits and teaser here and there from the community advisers whom also are in the dark 99% of the time.

in about 50 years.. odds are we will never see it even if WCG says its coming. personally i don't even like gpu computing in boinc.

Welcome prometheum! Thanks for contributing. While as of now WCG doesn't support GPU processing if you are looking for a workload for your GPU there are several out there depending on what flavor of GPU you have. If you have an Nvidia card and are interested in medical projects you may want to look at GPUGrid. :)

Any advice on what upgrades offer the best bang for your buck? is there much of a difference between an i5 2500k and i7 2600? or upping memory speed vs multiplier? i know it really depends on what projects you're working on but is there a general rule of thumb to follow?

working on the following projects

Computing for Clean Water
Clean Energy Project
Help Conquer Cancer
Fight AIDS@home

Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2
Influenza Antiviral Drug Search
The Clean Energy Project

i would definitely take a 2600 over a 2500 for an upgrade, those extra threads help out. if you can afford the extra bucks, the 2600K is the best to do, they are real easy to overclock well above 4ghz on air. microcenter usually has the best prices if you are near one.

the 2600k w/o question if in your budget, HT threads take bit of a hit compared to real cores IIRC, however your points will be better with the 2600k.

As for memory, i dont know how much of an affect it will have with WCG, and multiplier overclockign is about all you can do with a SB setup, so do ET

well we broke a million points on todays update.. now all we need to do is break 2 million points an update and we'll have this competition in the bag..

There we go, just swapped my account over from my own team (forgot to do it a day or 2 ago)

Added: 1x AMD Athlon 5000+
1x AMD phenom II X6 1090T @4.0

Soon to add (when i get aroudn to setting up WCG): 1x 2600k @ 4.5GHz

Good to have you aboard!

Well the first stats are out for the competition. We have a little ground to make up. We are currently 13th in the challenge with just a bit under a million points today. That score should come up a little as a few more people bring machines online and the points level out a little. My daily production should increase for the next few days. Great work everyone!

Oh and dont look now but Team EVGA is doubling our production. ;) Nice job Crunching@EVGA. That is a great showing for a team that Im pretty sure is a first timer for the Christmas Race.

1st timer, hell the team has only existed a couple of weeks. I 've been lurking over there and there are a lot of high power rigs moving from F@H to WCG including plenty of 2P/4P machines.

Good luck with the race:cool:

we need to increase our productivity by 13% to get into the top 10 teams

currently in 12th place right now!

I'm in (after my queue of yoyo@home projects are handled)

It's not going to be a 13% increase though ..... maybe 0.013% :D

Great work on the grid everyone! We are solidly in 12th place but I think that we can make a run at 10th. Im ordering the parts i need for my new Home Server build. Hopefully I'll be able to have it up and running for the last couple weeks of the challenge! Crunch [H]ard!

Hey I'm having trouble getting work on a 2p machine under ubuntu 10.10. The error says the app version has unsupported platform i686-pc-linx-gnu. I'm running boinc

There is a thread at EVGA with several different fixes listed. The basic problem seems to be that the BOINC client is looking for 64-bit "cores" which don't exist. Since you already have the client installed, I'd suggest the fix in the first post.

I don't know about the Linux versions in general since I only have an Ubuntu 10.04 virtual machine, but I do know with BOINC you don't actually need the 64bit client to get 64bit work. The work is sent by the servers and they determine which type you need. The BOINC software isn't doing anything but giving you a GUI. Not to mention there is only one WCG project with 64bit apps available.

I'm going to try to give this some boost. I've started a couple of machines, but will be out of state for a week. We shall see!

Welcome 0ldways! Looks like you are off to a great start! Thanks for the help. :)

It looks like we have basically pulled even in PPD with the 11th place team as we have had 1.1M+ points in each of the past 3 days. Now just to add enough points to catch the 11th place team!;)

Also congrats to Crunching@EVGA for hitting the 3M+ PPD mark and taking 5th place in the Christmas Race! Well done fellas. Now to see if you can track down the DPCs.

Anyone else having bad DSFL WUs? I have had a few that ran for like 50+ hours when I wasnt watching and the remaining time just read --:--:--. I just had to abort them. I wondered why my production seemed a little low. :(

Thanks for that link man. I adjusted my config so that Im not throttling my work CPU. It sounds like that should do the trick.

I finally got my heatsink from UPS tonight, so I finished the 2500K build. Installing the OS and getting it crunching might have to wait until tomorrow night though.

As far as the Christmas Race goes - It looks like EVGA passed the DPC and grabbed 4th place over all. Now to see if they can get Team China.

Way to go mashtub! Over 30K BOINC points today in WCG! We also had 43 users return WCG workunits today. Thanks everyone for the [H]ard crunching!

phoenicis must have finished his queue of yoyo. :D Nice work in WCG today sir.

With all of the firepower around here, why are we still sitting at 12th place?

To all the heavy hitters on the FAH-side, FAH is not going anywhere. Come join us on WCG for the remainder of the 2011 Christmas race. Let's make a better showing than last year!

I finally have my 2500K box up and running solidly with a very mild OC (3.5GHz). Anyone out there with a 2500K have any suggestions on voltage for 4.0GHz? Right now I left it on auto CPU voltage but i think that I can get by with less than the auto volts.

I see we gained about 100K on 11th today. I think we can still make a run at 11th before Christmas. Thanks to everyone who is helping out!

depends on the chip and board but 4.5Ghz seems to be around 1.35-1.37v some have gotten much lower and i've seen some as low as 1.27v but i'd say thats rare.

because we are all dependent on the other people running the same WU we already ran.. i still have WU's pending from november 27th that should of expired december 4th when i started WCG back up. that and i keep forgetting to turn WCG back on after playing MWLL. :D

In addition to what sirmonkey had already stated, the bigger the "firepower", the bigger the points penalty. If I am awarded points based on the average of my hardware performance and the verifier's hardware performance, I see no reason to have my fastest machines crunching only to then wait three or four weeks for grandma's laptop verify my result and award points to the team.
I did learn that some boxes that are not folding stable can crunch just fine and those boxes will probably continue crunching after the challenge ends most likely in Cosmology.
In the end, I hope everyone contributes whatever they can in the projects and areas that they prefer.

I understand the feelings toward the validation process but that's the way it works. I guess this is why WCG doesn't get any respect on this forum. I really don't see why it matters. Points are points. More cores equals more points. Who cares how many points you get? This race only lasts for a month. This is what I was trying to get across. If more of the heavy hitters on this team switched over from FAH we'd have no problems making a better showing.

Also, go back and read some of the posts above regarding redundancy. Validations are not an issue for the zero redundancy projects. They are: C4CW, CEP2, HFCC and FAAH. You get points awarded immediately once work is returned for these projects.

sirmonkey, you need to ensure your client is returning units before the deadlines. Once work is returned you'll get points immediately for the zero redundancy projects and when your wingman returns his work for the others. The only way you lose points is if you pull a unit and don't finish it before the deadline. I suspect this is what is happening when you game and forget to restart your client.
