I have a TV in my room which is up against a wall that borders with my roommate's room. The TV is not wall mounted so there is some space behind it. I really don't want to reconfigure my room since I really like the layout, but I don't want to bother my roommate with the noise of my TV. I am using the built in TV speakers.

If I buy some acoustic foam or some similar material and place it on the wall behind the TV, will it make any noticeable impact? Or do you have another recommendation?

I'm not blasting my TV volume or anything so I don't think I need a ton of sound proofing, just something to tone it down maybe 15%. I don't know a lot about this stuff so not sure what's possible/feasible on the cheap.

If you want the quickest cheapest way, go to home depot and buy a sheet or two of a compressed fiber board, the stuff used to make A/C ducts and cut it to shape and cover it with fabric. I would be amazed if the tv speakers were able to transmit much through the walls alone.

I'm willing to spend a little bit, I am currently looking into cheap places for acoustic foam. It seems like that should do the trick. Thanks

Acoustical foam is designed to decrease reflections in a room, not help prevent transfer of sound to adjoining rooms. The best way to prevent sound is to isolate the room or move the source, since you don't want to do either the compressed fiber board will be the next step, if you want to get really serious about prevent sound behind the tv you could sandwich a layer of limp mass barrier between two layers of the fiber board, should fit nicely in a 2x4 built housing and provide much better noise control.

Guess I should finally put the HAA tag back in my signature.

you might be surprised to find more noise gets out via your door than your wall, and that stuffing a towel under the door will make a ton of difference
