I am sure many if not all of you have had issues with Skyrim Alt-Tab. I seem to have come across a way that it works but is just odd. When I Alt-Tab out to another program or the desktop it works like a normal program. Then when I try and go back I get a full screen sized black window. Then while at the black screen if I Alt-Tab back through my programs and select Skyrim again it pops back up properly.

So for some reason you have to Alt-Tab back in twice? Someone with more technical knowledge than me might be able to answer why. I just discovered that made it work by accident.

Yes, you have to alt-tab twice, to go back. I thought it's first 3D Vision fault, but it seems that's general feature :)

Yeah I find I have to do this, i don't know why. I think alt tabbing so it goes to a black full screen window first and then clicking on the window also maximises it. Also while its full screen black window like that you can't alt tab back to the desktop without first loading the game backup properly.

Yeah, same issue here. It's annoying but only a minor one so I haven't bothered looking into it.

I have 3 monitors, this is what I do to fix it. I alt-tab, then click on the black screen, then move my mouse over to one of the monitors thats on desk top and click it, finaly go back and click the black screen and it puts me back in game every time.

i too have two monitors so maybe thats why

I get the same thing, but instead of having to alt tab twice I just click anywhere in the black region.

Alt + Tab, Click, back in.

This alt tab thing is pretty strange, it's not like it's loading or anything because I alt tab a second time, it pops back up instantly.

Thought I would add my wtf issue here, as it's sorta related. My game started acting up, and I'm was only getting like 8-10fps when I'm usually around 60-70. Tried everything to get it working again; uninstalling reinstalling game and vid drivers, using a restore point etc and no luck. So I had alt-tabbed out of the game to check CCC and when I alt-tabbed back, now it runs perfectly fine. Problem is, I have to do this everytime I load up the game now. Really wierd deal, no idea what is wrong or how to fix it.

Did you make any ini tweaks to the game, including uGridstoload for example?

alt-tab has a pretty good chance of causing a COTD for me (maybe 10-20% of the time), so I always try to F5 before I do an alt-tab

These Gamebryo games always have hated alt-tab. Avoid using it.

To get to other windows while playing Skyrim here is what I do:
- shift + tab into steam
- hit windows button, now i'm on my desktop
- to get back to the game: click on skyrim on the toolbar
- then shift + tab
- sometimes requires multiple clicks and shift + tabs to work

PITA. Yes, F5 for sure before doing so.

I have to do it in an even more convoluted fashion because I don't get the black area, it just sort of hides my taskbar - click the icon, alt-tab away, alt-tab back, alt-tab away, alt-tab back, wait for fifteen seconds, resume playing.

The Borderless Windowed mod on skyrimnexus fixes alt-tabbing (but can take a while for the fullscreen windowed to kick in on launch) but I can't use it with the 4GB address aware mod. So it's a call between dicking around or crashing.

Alt tab hardly works on any games. In fact, BF3 may be the first game to support it (at least in my experience)

Why are we acting surprised that Skyrim doesn't really support it when nothing else does either?

Did Bethesda explicitly say that Alt tab is supposed to work?

Alt-tab has worked perfectly for me in every game besides Bethesda and Valve games. Both companies seem to have a very hard time getting their software to alt-tab right.

Not that I'm aware of. If I did they should have been blown away when I reinstalled, because I deleted the game folder from the documents too. It happened after I installed the fps limiter mod from skyrim nexus. Whatever that thing did, I cannot undo it. It's just skyrim, all my other games run fine. Funny thing though, I get very improved framerates now. Running through dungeons and stuff, I get 90-120fps now and the game looks no different at all as far as I can tell. I had to go set SSAA and set everything to max quality in CCC to bring down the framerate, as I was getting all sorts of crazy physics bugs. Animals falling for the sky, shit flying everywhere when in enter a room. I'd be randomly waking along and my guy would start swimming...in the air, lol.

Don't get me started with Source engine games . TF2, in particular, is terrible about alt-tabbing. Oddly enough though, I don't have issues with it in all Source games. In one of them (L4D?), it seemed to work flawlessly.
