Alright guys, this is my only desktop and the motherboard's been semibroken since... forever. I'm talking about the issue with the motherboard not booting up when it's colder than 60F due to a faulty transistor.

I used to use a hairdryer in the wintertime to warm it up first but that was at home. Now, I can't afford to have my computer idle for 40 minutes before booting up. I missed turning in a grad assignment in the morning because of this and now I want to fix it for good.

I know there were pictures on the former abit forums showing which transistor needed to be replaced, yet I don't think Abit issued a recall. Since Abit Motherboards went the way of the dodo, so did their forums, and thus so did those pictures.

Does anyone know which transistor's at fault? I tried sesarching for 'Abit transistor' and 'IP35 cold boot' to no luck.

I didn't realize someone had found a fix for the problem.

AAR, I found many discussions but only one reference to removing a resistor (not transistor) near the 775 cpu slot to correct the problem.

These were very popular MBs and hopefully someone else can be of more help. :)

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies/links. I've searched TRP's forums and found this:

Their solution was a hairdryer as well.. which I don't have with me. It still takes anywhere between 3 minutes to 30 minutes to POST, depending on how cold it is. It's usually below 5 minutes now that it's warmer these couple of days.

This link says it's a transistor; it may well be a resistor, I don't know; but all the discussion boards I've found regarding this problem links to the forum.abit-usa.com with pictures of the causative component, which are now gone.

I don't use a hairdryer, and to buy one for use on a computer seems like a waste, so I may just decide to chuck this board and get a newer cpu/board/ram.

It's standing on its last legs anyway:
2 of the SATA ports were pulled off when disconnecting the SATA cables, still usable with a bit of glue.
Front audio header's completely dead, not just the Realtek 'disable front audio jack detection' issue.
Built-in network card's sometimes disabled and have errors in Win7 trying to re-enable it.
It's bent. Literally & visually bent at the CPU socket. It has had a giant CM Geminii cooler, the one with 2x120mm fans for almost its entire life because it was free after rebate. One day in the summer it wouldn't boot, so I folded and stuffed notebook paper underneath the CPU socket and it booted fine again.
And sometimes the IDE device disappears in Windows. I don't know if it's the DVD's fault or the board's, but a cable change didn't solve it. It's probably the board though.

So yeah, I guess it's probably time for a new 775 board or all core components. Argh. It's hard to justify spending money when I'll graduate with $40K in debt for just one year of grad school.

I feel your pain, it is never fun to deal with defect hardware, especially when you are living on a budget.

Luckily used P35 boards are cheap and plenty :)

I expected you to join that forum and ask for help.

That's what I'd be doing. ;)
