HDD prices rising

The ones I got were LaCie "hard disk - design by Neil Poulton", whoever he is.

ST2000DL001-9VT156 and ST2000DL003-9VT166 in the two I've added to RAID so far.

I got one of those from my school bookstore for $130, it was a 1Tb model, it had a Toshiba 5900rpm green drive in it, works ok, nothing to write home about

you guys dont know how bad it is right now.

i just bought 2tb hitachi 7k3000 for $130 each, bought 2. thanks to the seller.

anyways i cant be able to buy anything cause prices from sellers here have gone up TWICE.

my friend who worked for WD got laid off back in town and so did my other friends who worked with him got laid off and shut down. so WD has nothing to do right now but sit and wait....

As if he isn't trying to scare every one to go out and buy up drives now. I can't seriously see this going on for a whole year, they ought to have things back to normal by the Q3 2012 at the latest, otherwise the drive industry is going to implode.

Seagate is a publicly traded company. He has to provide this info to his shareholders and investors.

dangbrandon : you're talking about Thailand ?

Here in France where big box stores don't exist or don't sell hard drives, the situation is that you have to pony up an insane price to computer resellers, or buy used drives, still for an insane price.

Fortunately for me I decided two weeks ago to go counter my current trend of buying 2TB drives and soon switching to 3TB, and settled for used 1.5TB with more than 1 year warranty left. I could buy 18 of them, 10 7200.11 and 8 5900 LP, for an average price of 54€, roughly the price of new Samsung F4 2TB one month ago. Not great, but not insane either, and that should last me 6 months. I hope that in that time production is back to a level where prices are around that 30% markup from before the floods. Then I could go back to my plan of buying 3TB drives, and offloading my inventory of now more than 30 1.5TB.

Saying things won't go back to normal will help Seagate gouging prices down the line when things are indeed back to normal, but it clearly doesn't help now when they can't keep up with demand.

As for the drive industry imploding, what does that mean ? Demand is very much there, so the industry is going nowhere. What could happen is new entrants, but they would need to get into that market that everyone else seem to be fleeing, and they wouldn't have any kind of advantage, they would need the same tools that are lacking, would have to buy the IP, and WD and Seagate could counter them by just lowering prices.

I was planning on purchasing a second 4tb seagate external drive. Six days ago, it was on sale for $199 ($20 off) at best buy. I went online to check the price, and it jumped to $269. I sped to the store with receipt in hand, hoping to plea a case. Fortunately, they had not updated the tags on the shelf, so they honored the 219 price. I wish I could have justified purchasing more.

About 5 months ago I bought 5 x 2TB HDs for $69 each (Samsung F4's).

Providing that none fail I should be good on storage for the next 1-2 years, minus a SSD upgrade - but that's not impacted (still running a generation 1 Intel 40 GB SSD).

:( I picked up 2 Samsung HD103SJ drives for $60 each from Fry's three weeks ago. I was hoping to grab a couple more, but at the time didn't have the funds. Just stopped in today and the same drive is $110. Oh well, so much for building a new RAIDZ array for TV recording, guess I'll just stick with two single drives for now...

I had an interesting situation with Dell today when ordering a server. Seems they're out of 300 GB 15K RPM SAS drives and won't have any in for about 45 days. Had to switch to 450 GB 15K drives, which they still have stock on.

Well, my price match at Best Buy was about as easy as it goes. $36 back, so I got my three 1TB Seagates for $55 each.

The bonus is that the retail drives have a five year warranty, unlike the 2-year OEM ones. I have enough storage for myself (my WHS box has 9TB online, though 2TB of that is used for backup), but I will have clients who will likely have a drive go bad prior to the prices coming back down. I'd like to spare them having to pay insane prices, and if nothing happens, I'll buy an external box with an eSATA port multiplier, and add it to my WHS.

Here are some prices I found locally. So lame that its actually tempting to buy 1 or 2 in case I need them over the next YEAR and prices don't level back out before then.

WD Green 3TB 199.99
WD Black 2TB 219.99
WD Black 1TB 129.99
WD Green 1TB 99.99
Green Barracuda 2TB 139.99

Where are you getting these prices from?

Yup. That's what I ripped my 3TB from. It's got a WD greenpower inside.
I don't think that you can use your warranty if your drive were to fail. Don't hold me on that as I'm not 100%. But in all likely hood that is how it would work.

Those are actually good... Right now the WD black is $229 here (well on newegg.ca).

Just noticed a 2TB external "Medion" (german company) drive being advertised in the swiss post office for 89 CHF ($97/£62) - so there are still bargains out there.

Some manufacturers will, some won't. Regardless, externals often have shorter warranties.

I picked up a few of the 3tb external seagates, didn't crack it open yet. Initial reviews have lead me to believe it is a 7200 baracuda but I have not confirmed and don't have USB 3.0 yet to max out the drive read / write speeds.

I'm thinking about maybe picking up some 4 TB drives. They're around the same GB/$ as the smaller drives now, and don't seem to have gone up much (if anything) in price over here. That is assuming that they are actually available at the advertised prices...

The USB 3.0 cards are available on the cheap these days.

If the 3TB is anything like the 4TB, you can open it with a guitar pick.

Yeah, thats what I plan on doing, going to put them in a zfs pool. I am thinking raidz2 with 6 3tb disks, already have a few 3tb that are just formatted ntfs right now, but will feel better when all my data is moved to raidz2. .

I just cracked open the 3tb goflex usb 3.0 version from BB, it is a seagate barracuda xt ST33000651AS...

The problem I noticed on a few of these deals is they will limit the number of hard drives you can purchase at once.
Has anyone run in to this problem yet?
