Gamer Thwarts Gunman's Attempt To Steal CoD: MW 3

That's all well and good, but I would think that the decision to pull the trigger would crystallize fairly quickly as he sees the butt of a gun being withdrawn from under your jacket/out of your belt. I'm not saying don't defend yourself, as the situation allows. What I'm saying is: A) CCW is not the panacea so many make it out to be and B) MOST situations where a gun is already drawn on you will not allow for you to then go for your own gun or to make a move.

You would think that, and you'd be wrong. It's obvious from your analysis that most of what you think you know about firearms and use of deadly force was learned from years of cop shows on TV and action movies.

The criminal didn't expect the victim to fight back, do you really think he'd expect someone else to have a gun too? Do you think he'd recognize it as it was being drawn and presented? Having a gun drawn on you is a very rare occurrence for the vast majority of people. Police go through hundreds of hours of training just to be able to recognize it when it's happening. You really think some punk criminal who wasn't even expecting resistance would be able to recognize the threat and respond in under 1 second? The guy got picked up waiting in line at the same GameStop, clearly his situational awareness was lacking.

You are correct about point A, there are no panaceas. But with some training, practice, and personal situational awareness you can quickly take the initiative and switch things up even when someone else has the drop on you. And that's a far better position to be in than hoping the guy with the gun doesn't shoot you anyway after you comply, either intentionally or even accidentally.

Err...thinking that going Rambo on someone with a gun drawn on me is stupid is a result of me watching too many cop shows and action movies? wtf?

That you took what I said about being prepared to defend yourself and equated that with a movie reference simply validates my initial assessment.

My formal training with firearms began 24 years ago, I continue to train to this day, though more recently on close encounter self-defense situations. In all those years and all that training, I've never heard the term "going Rambo" and I'd be curious as to what that tactic entails if you'd be willing to share, unless of course you are done making my point for me.

My thought process was that drawing a concealed weapon once an assailant already has the drop on you, in the majority of cases, is unrealistic and more likely to get you shot.

You stated that I got that idea by watching too many cop shows and action movies. However in most action movies that I see, it is the assailant getting pummeled or some ninja move done to disarm him unrealistically. That is the SOP for an action movie - not that the protaganist goes for his CCW and is gunned down immediately.

You initially brought up the action movies and cop shows as a way to discredit my idea, but was completely contrary to the standard formula for cop/action shows; thus my "Rambo" reference.

Once the robber cocked his gun twice making the one in the chamber expel, you should know he isn't a killer. The only reason why you would "cock that hammer" is to shoot something. He was no shooter, and the gamer saw the pussy in his assailant's eyes and made a decision.

Here in Philly, the dude would've already been shot, and maybe later ask him what game it was.

raises hand - live in W.Philly and yes, guy with game would have been shot more than likely.

If someone pulled a gun on me, I would not try to "go rambo" on them, even if they were a complete doofus (this particular criminal apparently doesn't really know how to use a gun). But he still (the gamer) could have been shot if the robber panicked and pulled the trigger.

I've been robbed at knifepoint (was backed against a wall with a knife at my throat) and you better believe I handed my purse over. Yes I had mace in my pocket but this guy grabbed me from behind and moved so fast I couldn't get to it as my arm was pinned to the wall and my purse was in my other hand.

Talking guns vs. knives ... you can shoot someone from many feet away. A knife? that's up close and really personal. IMHO, you just shouldn't take chances either way. A $65 game is potentially worth your life? I don't think so.

If you could have reached the mace I wouldn't recommend trying that in the situation you described, with the knife already on you. Determined people/high people can fight through that pain and continue what they were doing.
