I find it hard to believe that a major movie studio would throw its weight around and send false takedown notices. That is just so unlike them...there must be some mistake. ;)

Hollywood movie studio Warner Bros. has admitted to a federal court that it removed files from the file-hosting site Hotfile without owning the copyrights. Some of the false takedowns were the result of failing filtering software but Warner also admitted that one of its employees deleted Open Source software that could speed up downloads.

Who watches the watchmen? They were given a tool, a greater authority than the average user. They abused it to save money and time trying to figure out if it was theirs or not.

They violated the DMCA. They broke laws.

What will be the repercussions?

Corporations are psychopaths. Maybe they can get off scott free by claiming mental insanity?

Typically, they throw a patsy under the bus and move on to something else. Corporations may be individuals under the law for some reasons but when it comes to criminal activity all of a sudden they've no control over themselves.

Yup. If this had been an individual you'd have government officials and entertainment execs lining up to ruin his whole life, but I bet we'll never hear about this again because Warner has more than enough money to just make the problem go away.

And governments are even worse since they exempt themselves from most of the laws.
