BF3 minimizing crash?

I've never seen this before in a game.

In both multiplayer and single player, my game will randomly minimize, and when I click the BF3 tab again, my desktop still shows but the mouse won't move. I have to alt tab to get the mouse back, and clicking anywhere freezes up my mouse again. It's as if the full screen window is there but invisible. No sound though.

The only way out is to kill the task.

The worst part is now this happens right after the briefing video for Operation Guillotine in campaign. Regardless of if I sit through the intro or skip it, I get booted. This doesn't happen when I replay an older mission.

I've updated my Nvidia driver to latest and also repaired my BF3, and BF3.exe is running in administrator mode..

Anyone?

Just registered to confirm the Operation Guillotine level crashing. It crashed during the intro cinematic but I got past that.. worked down the hill to the two machine gun nests and it randomly crashes in that area.. can't progress really.

I can only play 5-10min with a GTX 580 with exact same issues Dingo reports.

Update: I can play other games with the 580, but not BF3... I also swapped back to a GTX460 as a test and it can play BF3 just fine. Bug in the drivers for the 580 series I guess?

I hae had this issue as well. Check your paging file size. I know a lot of people turn it off or reduce too far. I had mine off and got a lot of crashes. this game is very memory intensive and want virtual memory. I finally got it stable with 2gb set in paging file. If yours is set to windows optimized then it could be a driver issue. best bet is to reinstall. I am very active over on another computer forum and have read tons of posts like this with some people getting it sorted by doing what I said above. Also if you are running MSI Afterburner you need to turn of "Enable low level hardware access interface" This works for many people to. I have it running and it works for some reason. Also going into regedit and searching for enableULPS and setting them all to "0" helps with crossfire issues.

As a matter of fact, I am using MSI Afterburner... I'm not sure what I did/didn't set my pagefile to, but will verify. I did have task manager up on a 2nd screen to monitor things like CPU load / RAM load, etc. and did notice that each time it crashed, BF3.exe was using ~1.7GB of RAM. I have 6GB total. I'll look into the settings you suggested and report back with my findings.

Thank you for the suggestions HDR.

Update:

1) Could not find "Enable low level hardware access interface" option in the MSI Afterburner software. Unable to test this setting.

2) I had an existing pagefile of appropriate size, I changed it to 2gb, 4gb, and other variations - no improvement.

3) I realized this card I have from MSI is factory overclocked. I looked up the nVIDIA stock clock settings and set the Afterburner software down to match it. Marked Improvement! I won't go as far as to say it "fixed" the issue as I've not had enough game time to test, but I was able to complete a couple rounds vs. only getting into a game 5min as reported.

glad i saw this thread. i've been experiencing these crashes as well, since the beta and at least twice a day since retail released.

the low-level hardware access interface option is in MSI beta. i was running the stable 2.1.0 version, so i just updated it to the newest beta, and unset the low-level hardware interface option.

my pagefile is also set correctly. i'm also using an nvidia card, a 480, with the 285.62 drivers from nvidia.

I can't play for more than 5-10 minutes before BF3 crashes on me. For the most part single player runs fine, but multiplayer crashes every time. My screen freezes and I have to cntl-alt-del to bring back the desktop. I get a dialog box telling me BF3 experienced an error and had to quit.

After scouring multiple forums last night it seems a lot of people with freezing problems have had luck underclocking their video card. MSI Afterburner is popular but I use EVGA Precision. My GTX460 is factory overclocked from the standard 675 core clock to 715. I reset the core clock to 665 and it seems better, but I haven't had a chance to do extensive testing. I may lower my settings from High to Medium to see if that helps as well.

I had these crashes constantly on my GTX580@stock using latest WHQL driver over first 20 hours, then I underclocked GPU by 20 MHz and I have played 10 hours and got 1 crash which was black screen crash which I didn't get often before underclocking so there might be something into this.

I did not change anything else in my system or game settings. My GPU temps are fine @stock and work fine in other games.

MatreX: Good to hear downclocking worked for you. I wonder if Nvidia's lastest set of beta drivers will help. I hear new beta drivers were released a day or two ago.

Downclocking my card allowed me to play for a couple of hours without a problem.

Not sure, the beta drivers may help, but I can wait for the next full release as I've had issues with beta drivers in the past. I mean, the overclock is not that much, this card is fast enough at stock so I'm not losing anything relevant. I'm just glad I can actually complete a few hours of play and not worry about crashing.

Also of note, I discovered just this weekend a recent Firmware update for my card and had a successful test over several rounds at factory OC'd speeds. Problem _may_ be resolved with this.

I was crashing to desktop at the same place.

All you have to do is restart that level. It has to do with a corrupt file and if you restart the level it should be fine.

Mine is crashing on every map right after spawning. This sucks.
Its weird, I see a lot of ppl had this crash upon realease, I had no problem back then, I just started crashing in the past two weeks.

ive had problems with just having msi afterburner installed. even if it wasn't running, problems went away once I uninstalled it.

I know that EVGA Precision X overlay will crash my game, you should check any overlays and turn them off if you can.

I had BF3 on my SSD and it crashed from time to time. Recently it was tough to start or finish a game.
I uninstalled it and re-installed it on the HDD. The game hasn't crashed since. It could have became a corrupted after the patches or it just didn't play nice with my SSD.

It's strange you mention that it started in the last 2 weeks, as this problem has suddenly re-appeared on my system. When I last posted, I was testing a fresh firmware for my card and has been stable ever since. No major changes other than the standard Origin game updates. In an effort to fix, I've updated to latest 301.42 drivers, but still have the issue. My next step is to downclock my card to reference speeds to see if that helps.
