Redbox is raising prices on DVD rentals by 20%, making it $1.20 a day to rent a DVD. Blu-ray and game prices will remain the same. I'm not sure how this can be compared to Netflix's series of blunders but I guess we'll see if there is outcry over the additional $0.20.

Luckily for Redbox, its price hike isn't nearly as great as Netflix's. Starting on Monday, customers who want to rent DVDs from Redbox kiosks around the U.S. will need to pay $1.20 per day, rather than the $1 they previously paid. The 20 percent price hike won't affect Blu-ray or video game rentals, however, which will stay at $1.50 per day and $2 per day, respectively.

They will do whatever they can get away with. Like Citi raising their minimum balance on mid-range accounts from $6000 to $15,000 and levying a $20/month fee if it is under. But if you have that much in there, what is $20/month to you? Again, they will do whatever they can get away with.

I'm sure RedBox was already making a good steady income. :/ looks like i'm back to piratebay.

Redbox did an amazing thing by bringing rentals down to $1 from the rush to $4-$5 at brick and mortar places. Now, that they are the only game and town and the people who supply the core product (the movies) want more..people want Redbox up on a cross for rasing prices. Fuck me. Prices drop by 75% and people bitch about a slight increase. Most stupid thing I have read all day.

It's 20 fucking cents, I hate our society. And they only did it because of debit card fees which means Redbox probably makes a 30 cent profit per rented movie. Notice how BluRays and Games stayed the same.

Blockbuster has made a "soda machine" style rental box.... they basically did what Redbox has done since 2010.... free codes, $1 a day.

I will use Blockbuster machines as they (totally surprised) put one in my local gas station not even 1 mile away. And the free codes I have used (just like the old redbox codes we used in 2010 and such) are pretty abundant.

Blu-ray stayed the same so I don't care. I get my DVDs at Blockbuster via free codes (because who wants to pay Blockbuster, right?) and my Blu-rays at Redbox.

I agree, but when stuff adds up (like a quick movie rental) ... thats less entertainment in the end for consumers.

Why pay $1.20 at Redbox 2 miles away, when you can potentially get Blockbuster for $1 even closer? This is my situation..... sorry, I'd rather get 5 movies for $5, rather than 5 movies for $6.... just common sense, to me.

This! Except I still need to purchases DVDs (like lots of people, believe it or not). This is just encouraging the sales of Blu-ray & Bluray players... and trying to wipe out DVD for good, eh?

i was under the impression redbox didnt make money of the dvd rentals themselves but the business that pay redbox to have them installed at there location each month.

"Pulling a Netflix" would be informing your customers that the Blu Ray redbox machine will be split from the other video game and dvd machine and placed in different geographical location and then doubling the price of each.

A .20 bump in one of their 3 products seems like... well, pulling a "stay in business" to me.

Most of you who say "who cares" about the price increases aren't thinking about the big picture. Our economy is shrinking, disposable income is drastically down as inflation is kicking our ass. Yet during this "depression" companies are raising prices non-stop. This is very bad, all around. I blame Hollywood for entertainment becoming such a scam. There is no reason they shouldn't allow modern movies to stream inexpensively. They have no production costs. They could collect $0.10 cents a showing and collect millions. I'm so fed up with a dime here, a dollar there. It is all adding up to one big Pain in the ass to the average joe. God almighty. Now is the time to cut costs, just like our company does, and be competitive. FUCK the movie and music industries. Also FUCK the oil industry.

Unfortunately it has to do with Senator Durbin's changes in Dodd-Frank's (dumb law by the way) that caused the rise in prices under which debit card/credit card issuers are tacking fees to usage of their cards. So it's an unintentional consequence of our idiot Congressmen and Senator's.

even if it was just a penny people would still bitch, not like people were using redbox if they had the blockbuster one around thanks to the free codes. People will do what they can, when they can, to get things as cheap as possible, and then whine and bitch when there's no jobs.

Gee I wonder why redbox can do it for $1.20 compared to a vid store needing to do it at $4-$5, could it be cuz the electronic box dosn't need to pay someone to man the store? no insurance? no rent? no city and state taxes?

Seriously, its 20 cents. Go look in your couch or in your car for two dimes and you'll be good to go. Or you can just go to a video rental store and rent a movie for $3-4. Difficulties I know.

Don't say that to loud... the easiest way to cut costs, is fire people. And raising the jobless rate even more helps no one.

We cut everything else before we resort to people. Even do our own office cleaning now. But we don't raise costs to the consumer. Cutting people comes next if sales remain soft.

Best post in this thread. I concur. Everyone wants something for nothing, even if it was a great deal to begin with.

20% Broceritops. Brochacho. Brolociraptor. Brohemian Rhapsody. Brah. If you don't think 20% is a big deal, you're just going to fail in the game of life. Read that again: All of a sudden, out of the blue, with no justification, Red Box wants to increase their overall income (and profit?) by 20%. There is no justification for this. There's a reason why Netflix has done nothing but go downhill after their last move.

Needless to say, anyone who works with raw numbers instead of percents will be a failure to life as far as finances go.

No justification? Have been paying any attention? All the card companies are raising their fees and the movie studios are charging everyone more.

I don't use Redbox frequently enough for $0.20 to be an issue for me.

I still think it's a good deal even if it were at $1.50.

Here is a perfect example of these people who say that workers or union workers are the economic problems of the country. When was the last time you heard of Joe six Pack getting a 20% raise. The workers wages barely keep up with inflation(3% or less) and these outfits think nothing of jacking the prices of their products by 20%.

This right hurr... people are too stupid thinking 20 cents. It's 20%. No one ups and increases overall revenue by 20%. Netflix...fucking...FAILED. They shot STRAIGHT down. I had mucho respect for Red Box too, but this is just retarded to boot. I guess you would be smart if you... I don't know... learned from others?

You mean the one where studios vastly overvalue their own products?

Partially that, and also a slain competitor (Blockbuster) is affecting the market. They'll eventually cost as much as blockbuster. Just like Netflix + Internet + overage charges will cost as much as a cable sub eventually.

I actually think the law is great. Why should it cost more to process a transaction for $1000 dollars than to process a $10 transaction? A flat quarter per transaction is very reasonable, though RedBox is one of the few retailers where it hurts. (Most people aren't going to use a debit card on something less than $5).

The banks are the ones that went nuts over the law, and that is why I won't use a debit card anymore. I don't pay a fee for credit cards, and a certainly am not going to pay a $4 a month fee for a debit card.

The reason prices are rising is right in the middle of your rant... "INFLATION"

The government has been printing money for the past 3 years, and this always leads to inflation. While the official us inflation rate is reported at around 3%, it's actually much higher since they do not include energy or food prices in that 3%.
Have you noticed that not only are food prices higher, but the package sizes are getting smaller? A 10% price increase and a 15% size reduction, equals almost a 30% overall increase.

Blame the MPAA...they would like nothing better than to kill off RedBox and Netlfix...it's actually that simple. They want to sell movies for $60 or rent them at $10 a day....nothing will change their outdated thinking.

Cost of doing business is going up. Transportation costs, electricity, food, fuel, ... it's all going up. In our company we are doing everything we can to contain costs but in some areas we are having to raise our prices. 20% is pretty steep I will agree, but I'm sure it had to be done to stay in operation.

We can blame anyone we want, but it's not "one" thing that's causing costs to increase.

Most of the things you list are cost of living, not of doing business ;)

20% increase of $1 is nothing compared to nearly a 100% increase of $7.99 a month.
