Opened up Origin this evening and noticed BFBC2 was listed in my Origin games list, wtf? I have a hardcopy of this game and isn't on steam or registered with EA. And it's not even installed on the same Drive as Origin, Origin is on my C: and BFBC2 is on my D:, I haven't even played Bad Company in weeks. I did navigate to My instal of BFBC2 last night looking at all the different places PunkBuster has folders but I didn't launch the game. Did Origin detect my instal of the game and automatically link it thru Origin? The activation code on Origin is the same as in my booklet for BFBC2.

I guess its in the mile long EULA somewhere that they can scan for and link my software from my other drives into their service without my permission. I like MY computer setup MY way and all I wanted on Origin was BF3. I imagine if I uninstall it from Origin it will remove the game from my D: drive.

I know its not the end of the world but it still pisses me off.

What's the issue exactly? Origin provides a certain number of games, BC2 included. It simply checked if you have BC2 installed by reading the appropriate registry key then added a shortcut to it in the client. You don't like it because it provided a convenient way of launching BC2?

If you don't want Origin using the registry, don't install it. Millions of programs use the registry so why should this one be any different? I hate to say it but it seems that if you had a deeper understanding of the inner workings of programs you wouldn't have any issue with this.

Why is this even an issue? It's not using any extra resources; it's not hurting anything. It's HELPING you. It linked the game to your account, so now (I'm not entirely sure if this is how it works, so don't quote me) you can probably download the game from Origin if you were to lose your hard copy.

People will complain about anything sheesh...

It just bothers me that it scanned my computer and linked it when i didn't want it to. I just like to have the choice.

You did have a choice, you installed Origin. That is its job. It just looked at the registry, which is kind of the purpose of it :p

It is? I thought Origin was just a DD store front to provide competition to Steam? Why does Origin have to scan my registry?

It's not going to find out anything about you by scanning your registry, so what does it hurt? The only reason to be concerned would be if you had a pirated game..

I had to install Origin if I wanted to play BF3, I guess I had the same reaction when I had to instal Steam when I bought HL2 years ago. I just don't like the direction things are going and soon I'll have 100's of applications doing all kinds of stuff I don't want just to play the games I enjoy. Am I really so far out there for thinking this way?

I think its job is to advertise games to me.

it has to scan your registry to make sure you dont already have a game installed.

or you could endlessly install any game and origin wouldnt stop you aside from telling you that the folder might already exist...

cmon this is a BS reasont to be upset about something origin did. all it did was make your life easier. and you should enter your BFBC2 cd key iinto origin any way and just add it to your account it costs you nothing to get the digital version too.

I wouldn't even say it scans the registry. It accesses a set table of specific keys that EA games set within the registry when an installation occurs & it knows what to look for. Once it finds one, it adds it to the game library window. Even Creative Labs Alchemy checks for a list of keys & if it doesn't find a game, you have to add it yourself to the list. This is a NON-ISSUE since Origin doesn't scan a damn thing.

Orgin hate is sometimes illogical...

Oh come on, it's not a matter of choice it's simply a matter of you finding something to whine about.

Actually Origin's job is decided by EA and not by you. Now with that said your free to use it or not so why complain that the program did exactly what it's designed for?

QFT

Also let's not forget that if it didn't find the registry entry and he then added his key to Origin it would add it's own registry entry which then would clutter it up more (and likely result in many of the people that would complain about it finding the entry bitching and moaning that it didn't flind it.

Seems to me that with many people no matter what they are going to bitch and moan about Origin, and if this is the best someone can find then Origin must be completely awesome.

lol it didn't "Scan" your registry.. it looked for a few known game installs and put the links..

i don't know why but this just made me laugh..

That is like complaining and getting paranoid when the installer puts a shortcut on your desktop "Akk!! how did my desktop know i had it installed?!"

Well, I ran Origin last night and it did show me the BFBC2 is available to install.
I did not had it installed on any of the drives. I think it just picked it up from the EA account as a registered license.

That's a different function altogether since its looking at what you have via account rather than on your system.
