Skyrim retail vs. steam

How will you buy Skyrim?

One of the things I didnt' like about Oblivion was the way enemies leveled up with you. You get to a tough section, go level and come back, and the stinking monsters did the same thing! So a few mods later the monsters are level specific to the areas they are in and I can level past them with easy! :D Thats how I roll (my multi-sided virtual dice) So basically I have to wait until some of those awesome mods are created.

yep lvl scaling is the bane of rpg's

oh, they did not level up with you as much as level up past you. sometimes you would fight the chiefs or the shamans and they would be impossible to kill. The levelling is fine when you did it with combat skills. The running, jumping and stealth would not do anything for you in that regard.

why on earth would anyone buy the game on Steam when you can get from Newegg (this weekend) for much cheaper plus you get the high quality map (which is very important in all Elder Scrolls games)

Because newegg charges me tax (9.25%), and I dont care about a burlap map. And I like steam better.

Any other questions?

Just jumped on the newegg deal, but still had to pay tax :( $53. Better than 60 though.

When a game uses Steam as it's DRM, why does a question like this exist? Whether you buy it digitally or through Steam, you're still using Steam.

Retail for everything until there is a reason to go with Steam.

It's unfortunate. I wish they'd fuck off making things Steamworks. At least you don't have to pay Steam prices.

the question exists because although you will have to use Steam no matter where you buy the game from, the difference is that you can still buy it for a good deal cheaper from Newegg this weekend...so just because it uses Steam doesn't mean you cannot save $$ from buying elsewhere

Steam just cause I've been waiting for this game forever and I don't want to wait any longer then I have to.

Saying this again to promote awareness of digital distribution options...

Skyrim is $54 at D2D (also works with Fatwallet) if you do not want to wait for delivery, Newegg, boxes, or whatever.

I voted Steam, but just ordered it from Newegg. Couldn't pass up the better deal :D

I will use the digital download from bestbuy due to the rewards issue. Its digital pre-order and after 5 game pre-orders I get 100 bucks back.

I like steam, but I don't like it when it's forced on me.

Disc versions aren't all bad, especially for those of us who spend time in areas without high speed internet.

I just jumped on that pre-order deal from Newegg. Mainly because of my shoddy, inconsistent internet, and I'm a sucker for maps. I had to have that map!

Plus, it's steamworks, so I'll have the luxury of owning a digital copy as well.

I'm going old school on this one:

1. I'm pre-ordering from a local Gamestop
2. Taking the day off work (when I was younger this would mean 'call in sick')
3. Driving up to the store first thing in the morning to pick up
4. Playing as soon as I get home and have the game installed

This way I can have my cake (retail copy with physical disk and manual) and eat it too (play it on the first day). I'm just taking a gamble with my day off that Steam doesn't have any of their usual release day issues. Sucks knowing I have a copy of the game in hand but can't play it because Steam hasn't set the 'IsActive' box to True yet. :(

Quick question with Newegg pre-order: will they ship it so that it arrives on 11/11?
EDIT: never mind, I see the note that they do not guarantee release date delivery.

^ Deal for skyrim on newegg $47.99 after the code.. plus a free burlap map!

Good deal but I kinda want it on steam.. but there's not discount on there (I think).

I'm torn at the moment, so was wondering will you guys buy physical or digital? :(

EDIT: Just read that it is steam activatable. Can anyone confirm?

As if my girlfriend wasn't already pissed about all the time I will spend on Skyrim, now I can have a burlap map out on the coffee table too.

Steam, mostly because I have a couple hundred dollar "gift card" tied to the account.

And to clarify, no Valve still does not have a gift card/certificate program. The wife gave me a $500 prepaid visa (no fees) that she taped a "Steam" image to for my birthday. I just tied the card to my account and shredded it.

Just think of how many $5 deals you could have gotten with that!

Has anyone heard anything about Steam doing a preload for Skyrim? I'll preorder on Steam if they are. If not, it will be quicker for me to just go retail.

A buddy of mine has been waiting for a while to get this game, preordered it and planned to be "ill" on 11/11/11. A few weeks ago his fiancee decided that 11/11 was the perfect day for there wedding. The bad news is he has to find a way to bring an Xbox on the honeymoon. Good news I now have a real reason to take the day off.:D

lol, he'll probably net more skyrim time if he DOESN'T bring it for the honeymoon. Just not worth it no matter how awesome of a game it is. My wife would never have tolerated my gaming habits if I tried that. Now if she's just as excited about the game, then that might be a different story.

I'm waiting to see how well people like it, how much it costs after a while, how well it mods, & if it crashes much. I'm very cautious about Gamebryo (Oblivion, FO3, FONV) games due to horrible crashes & save corruption (50 to 100 hrs of gameplay down the drain by game-stopping crash points). Since Skyrim has a Gamebryo-derived engine, I'll hold out for a while I think.

gonna buy it retail. You get faster installation, and a burlap map, and its the same price.

Doesnt really matter to me if the package comes on the 11. - Im going to a Cake concert that evening anyway :)

I'm surprised so many people are ordering from Steam when a retail box gets you a decent price and a Steam key.

+ "Faster" download (even DVD > most interwebs, and your DVD/Blu ray drive wont have "steam launch day download speed" issues) :D

They usually let you pre-load on steam so all you have to do is get it unlocked at midnight or whenever they do so.

(a 6GB game only takes about 2 hours to download on a decent connection anyways)

I went with Steam for the sheer convenience of it. I love that if I ever have to reformat my computer that Steam auto-loads up like 90% of my games for me. No digging through old disks and dozens of installers - I just tell it to download the games and when I wake up it's all done.
Yes, there are downsides (no going back to old versions) but the convenience factor wins for me.

What if you are on AT&T, or live in canada? :p

Once the game is tied to steam you can download it from steam normally, it just becomes another game in your library. Often, even when the disk is placed in the drive it will try to download it instead of reading off the disk (which annoyed lots of people with the huge size of shogun 2 :D).

uVerse FTW!

Probably gonna just get it off of steam. I have no time to run around looking for a copy etc. Just pay, leave the PC on overnight 11/10 and play that friday night.

most ppl dont want useless boxes lying around. unless your like my fat friend who likes to keep boxes on shelves.

I'm still playing Oblivion lol however I will be buying Skyrim on Steam when it is $5 just like I did with Fallout 3 and Vegas.

I got 300 hours out of oblivion. That is some 20 cents per hour. A movie costs some $5 per hour and often times they suck. So you want to wait a year and pay 2 cents per hour? Whatever works for you.

For games that use Steamworks, I buy retail because I get the box and I get to activate on Steam!

yup me too...especially since Steam almost always charges retail price at launch...retail always has sales prices...so you get the best of both worlds- cheaper price + Steamworks

Shit, I would kill for a connection that could do that. If I'm lucky, a 6GB game would only take around 9-10 hours to download. I think DA:O took 2 entire days to DL from Steam.

The above is why I opted for retail, plus, I quite enjoy my collection of boxes. Yes, I do keep them on shelves. No, I am not fat.

And the map, can't forget the map!
