In a nutshell, I've had a i7-990X come my way at an extremely good price. The setup I'll be springing is a few components away from being a great rig. It needs a better motherboard. I've leaning towards an Asus Rampage III formula. The Rampage III extreme looks nice but I can't see what the extra $100 goes for. I'd also like to get input as to any MSI or Gigabyte boards I should consider. Thoughts?

I used the Rampage III Extreme in my previous computer and I can easily recommend it if you don't mind the price. It was very easy to work with and extremely stable for the year that I owned it. (never had a single BSOD or issue with it)

Personally I think the Rampage III Extreme is by far the best (Black Edition is of course a step up but MUCH more expensive for some new features that may or may not be useful to you), most stable board around for high end OCs and featureset on 1366. I have the Rampage II Extreme and I have been thinking of getting a III or III/BE if I can find one for cheap to hold me over until Socket 2011 Ivy Bridge-E if SB-E turns out to be expensive crap.

You have a fantastic processor that when overclocked competes or bests pretty much everything else out there and it needs a good mobo. For me, the Asus RoG series has been the top of the line and only the Evga Classified (massive stability issues and sometimes problems getting them into cases depending on the version) and the Gigabyte G1 Sniper/Assassin (Expensive, but quality similar to Asus RoG - Gigabyte is the only other true high end mobo manufacturer I suggest besides Asus but until recently they didn't have anything to compete with Asus RoG and TUF/Sabretooth lines - now they do) etc... are in the same ball park.

You luck bastard! Congratulations man, I've only ever seen people run R3's for those procs.

I looked at the black edition and that's out of the question.. What I'm trying to figure out as well is why the extreme is listed as an EATX and the Formula is listed as ATX but the dimensions on both Newegg and the Asus website are identical.

Looks like I can get a great deal on an i7-980x myself, so been looking at this board: Gigabyte GA-G1.SNIPER it's an x58 refresh, not cheap, but...

What are your plans for cooling?

Got a MSI Big Bang X Power and been very pleased with it. Not a single problem in a year, and MSI does a great jobs with Beta BIOS. If there's a problem MSI with come up with a solution in the form of a Beta BIOS. I have read Asus isn't a prompt in their BIOS updates.

id have to agree on the msi big bang board especially with the sale price of 219.00 on newegg right now....its a steal and a great board also....myself if i were looking tonight id have to go for the msi big bang...heavy duty board for the money....
