Somebody please explain to the Muskingum County Sheriff that there is a 140 character limit on tweets. If you are trying to warn people abou...

Modern lawmen use the Internet to inform the public during emergencies, so it was no surprise yesterday when Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz took to Twitter after four dozen dangerous animals - including lions, tigers, wolves and bears - escaped from an Ohio reserve. The bad news is that Sheriff Lutz on several occasions found his tweets cut short by Twitter's notorious 140-character limit.

Hey Steve, with the three periods at the end you are at 144 characters. Thought I'd point that out just in case the sheriff's confusion somehow infected you too. :p

Well at least he's trying to do a good job. Most wouldn't bother to twitter.

That whole story is awful.

I feel bad for all those animals, what a douchebag move by the owner. (last I heard he let them out on purpose then killed himself, if that's changed I apologize)

that is still the story, he unlocked all the cages and gates then killed himself. they are thinking he did it just to piss off his neighbors and cops as one last fuck you

Sucks for him the animals didn't hurt anyone. The county got the last laugh.

Change.org is petitioning for banning exotic animals in Ohio now because there's no law that prevents people from keeping them, like in most other states. I support it 100% because there's no reason for anyone to have exotic animals in captivity. Get a fucking dog and cat or maybe a goldfish and hamster if you want a pet. Not a Siberian tiger. They don't belong here.

I find the twitter limit annoying as well when it should not be there due to it mainly been an internet based service (not as an hard limit any way as it is currently is)

why cant it just do what other mobile phones do, warp the tweet to another tweet

I find Twitter annoying :p Yes it has its uses, but it really is useless beyond stupid brief incoherent statements with its 140 character limit.

psh, sissy, siberian tiger = best home defense ever

sucks when he decides he wants the couch though :(

Unintentionally hilarious!

Scumbag Sheriff - warns of impending doom, doesn't give specifics.

What sucks is for all those poor animals. Sherrif's department could have called in assistance from surrounding areas or something to handle things better than just go "shoot to kill" :( There was absolutely no reason not to try to recapture and save the animals. Hell, if I was in the area I would have happily volunteered to carry a tranq gun and try to rescure a few. But no.. just another case of "we don't know how to handle it, so we just use brute force" :(

I disagree! We should deregulate private exotic animal ownership. This will create jobs and the free lion-tiger-bear market will ensure no citizens are ever harmed in a tragedy like this again. I propose a constitutional amendment guaranteeing private citizens the right to bare bears. If we outlaw bears, only criminals will have bears.

It's time to say NObama to government fascists trying to take our lions!

I was discussing that with my gf last night and we agreed that professionals would be too slow with that high of a count - they would have to drive or fly in with all of their cages and other logistics, and then it'd take time to round all of these animals up. They had to be stopped before someone got hurt.

Oh please. Obama loves lions. He's from Kenya after all.

This thread just got so much more hilarious. Don't forget the right to concealed carry of bears.

"Why no that's not a bear...that's a Toyota Prius!"

I know him personaly and he's an idiot anyway. I didn't vote for him lol

Um.. NO I DO live in the area and the shoot to kill was absolutly needed and I'm very glad he did it. Tell you what bring your kids over the next time 48 man eating animals get loose and tell me then if you would like to tranq them or shoot them before the killed someone...

Pretty much this. Everyone's having a knee-reaction to seeing all these animals killed without thinking about the situation. They simply were not equipped to humanely trap all those animals, and they were extremely dangerous. They needed to be taken care of immediately. I

lionstigersbearsonloosestayinsidecopsshootingthemwillletknowwhensafe.

And I don't even use Twitter.

it's not a matter of trapping it's a matter of tranqing them.

The sheriff's department didn't do the right thing.

Fear mongering to the press doesn't change that. They convinced you they did the right thing and I bet a ton of other people too.

they most likely did not have the resources to tranq that many animals at once. Plus its not really a good idea to just hand a cop with no wild animal catching experience a tranquilizer gun and ask them to bring back those animals back alive. They did the right thing of ending the situation as fast as possible before someone got killed.

How many tranq. guns do you think the department had? It's not like they had an entire storage unit filled with guns and dosages for tigers, lions, and bears.

"Ok boys, there are nearly 50 dangerous animals running loose. Let's start calling the outlying counties and spare some men to take a few hours and go round up enough tranqs."

or your version of the events..

"Shit ya, this is it boys. Let's go hunt some exotic game. Carol, call the press and get them in on this, too. We need nation wide fear mongering."
