Late to the Metro 2033 fan club

You both describe my qualms regarding Metro -- these issues are what I'd like to see addressed in Last Light including the shooting; while not bad I agree with someone mentioning earlier about the the game being somewhat Bioshock-esque in that regard. None of these stop the game from being good, but taking them into account could make Last Light an amazing experience.

I would say tough enemies must remain tough. I hate it when I can play the game through without problems. I think it was possible to kill everyone in those 3 rooms. But I needed a little bit more luck and patience :)

I bought this for $5 a while back, but never played it because I thought my E6750 couldn't hack it. I just put my 2500K rig together and got everything running tonight and Metro is downloading now!

I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot now that I have a worthy machine.

Hey, wished you would have tried it with the e6750, thats what I got and it runs fine. But, please come back and tell us how it runs maxed out on your new cpu, I am thinking of going with that exact cpu and want a real world opinion.

The problem in this instance is that enemies are not tough by design but because of (what seems to be) lack of thereof especially regarding the level you describe -- "Dry".

You identified a few issues yourself:
- Once alerted enemies know where you are even when hidden;
- Enemies are able to hit you whereas they are out of sight;
- Once you are spotted it is indefinite.

I'd add that numerous times I would have a bandit's head right in my cross-hair and the bullets would not take him down as if I had missed him. Not to mention a few glitches with the enemies who are standing on the scaffoldings.

Correcting these kind of problems while improving on the AI could still provide challenging encounters.

The book is way better than the game.

Without the game however I guess the great majority would not even know about the them. :D Thanks to this game I am actually going to order both Metro 2033 and Metro 2034 novels.

They finally got around to translating 2034?

I had started playing Metro 2033 late last year, and basically only made it through the intro (where Hunter showed up and then left) but never went back and played it after that.

Well after reading this thread last week I went back to it and started over this weekend and played through the entire game over the weekend and I loved it.

The only problem I had was the sound, for some reason dialog was all but impossible to hear unless you were facing the person, although this did not seem to effect environmental effects so I'm not sure what the issue was.

I loved the story, and had figured out early on what the dark ones were trying to do, but had no clue that there was two possible endings until seeing something about it online after finishing and personally other then a couple "give a bullet to a poor person" part and the chance to rescue the prisoners I never really saw any other moral choices that could lead to an alternate ending.

I used the AK (upgraded to scoped partway through) and shotgun (revolver style) through the entire game, until I got the ak 2012 in Polis. The revolver I just upgraded as I found better ones laying around, long barrel, and then scoped with silencer.

I fell in love with the auto shottie I got at the range base, but thankfully it wasn't available earlier as it REALLY eats through the shells and of course after Polis shottie shells are hard to come by.

I only disliked the linear aspect of the game, and the mutant rush BS

wish they'd make a second one that was more Stalker like. I want to explore.

I hate those damn Librarians. Stare Stare Stare.... walks away and jumps down a hole. I turn around and instantly get smacked.

There would be no point in doing so -- the game would no longer be Metro but Stalker. It would be a bad production and business choice to move the game in a direction that would make the two franchises identical.

I don't like them either; they are really hard to take down.

Yeah, I didn't have the patience for that so I just killed them all. :D

Man that was fucking tough. I was literally panicked at one point I think there was like 2 or 3 on my screen. I was running low on ammo, all I had was shotgun ammo which did jack shit to them, and I was low on filters. It took me a couple tries to get past that part as it was so fucking intense.

Oops, somethings bashing through the door and I'm dead. Found some revolver ammo and ended up getting through okay but that was definitely the point where I said "this games fuckinga awesome" to myself. One of my more memorable experiences in gaming.

You need to never loot any of the bodies in the whole entire game to ensure you get the good ending.

Yeah that was the hardest part by far for me. I was down to the knife at one point. The black ones in the basement didn't really give me much trouble, I just hauled ass and bypassed. They didn't seem to come into the stairwells if you didn't hurt them.

Yeah same. It was just the very first portion where you are navigating all the corridors that gave me the business. The rest I squeeked by without issue.

That is incorrect:

You have to accomplish specific actions/make the right choices at given moments in the game to gain moral points.

I guess that's where it got confusing & reading some strat guides didn't help with that.

I am going through again on ranger easy. I picked up the volt gun early on and sold it at armory for a duplet, then went back to the room and sold the heavy shotgun for a duplet, then went back again and picked up the volt gun that was left. I no longer have ammo issues.

The 'sneaking' moments can be a pain though -- this is one of the weak points of the game.

I did a nice balance of sneaking and non-sneaking. I'd sneak into a place, and once I had a good position, and had a feel for where people were, I'd start quiet, maybe with a knife, then move up to more powerful weapons, until there were only a couple left, and then finish them off at close range. There was a particularly fun area, where you could shoot out just about every light, and attack everyone in the dark. (about mid-way into the game)

I play on hard and enemy see you even if you destroy all light sources and you do not see a shit. I see them only when gun aim turns red or they start shooting at me :)

That happened to me sometimes. I was never sure if it was a bug, or just because of difficulty level. Sometimes they wouldn't see me, but others they would when I thought they probably shouldn't. Happened a few times in that specific area I was talking about actually. It made it pretty hard to get through for a bit. (probably restarted the area about 4-5 times before making it through.

I have to admit that I never gave this game a second look because it looked like Stalker to me. Maybe I'm wrong about this game, does it have a Stalker feel to it?

Similar atmosphere I suppose but the game play is incredibly different. Metro is very linear but in a good way. There's good pacing and your story/journey is always advancing from station to station.

i am playing Stalker: SOC right now along with Metro 2033. I am enjoying both for different reasons.

Metro 2033:
- Cant get lost
- Looks beautiful
- Great story
- While not a big variety of weapons, each weapon definitely has its pros/cons.

Stalker: SOC
- I love open world game play
- Looks very good with complete mod
- Great story
- Lots of variety for weapons/armor

This game is freakin hard on the higher difficulties. Played my first time through on normal, started this time on hardcore. Die in 1-2 shots, and the AI reaction time is less than a second from when you pop your head out to when they start firing. Makes it hard to line up a much needed headshot to conserve the limited ammo before being killed. They'll hear or see you kill enemies even with throwing knives, then know exactly where you are even in total darkness, while you struggle to even see them against a slightly lighter background aiming down the sight. Wish you could lean.

So fuck that, went back to normal. Playing on wireless kb/mouse on an hdtv, so not exactly looking for a huge challenge. Ranger difficulty modes must be insane. Maybe I'll play it when I can get 60 or 120fps solid a couple years from now lol.

There are some really creepy visuals to be had in this game, but the game play itself decidedly grade B. Know what I mean?

Got this at the weekend and am loving every minute. Last night i decided to play in the dark - was timidly going through a tunnel when my cat jumped on the desk... Pretty much had a nervous breakdown.

Ranger difficulty is not necessarily harder. While ammo is more scarce, all damage is amplified, to you and the enemies. I actually found fighting the mutants much easier in Ranger Hardcore due to the increased damage.

About purchases in the game, during my play-through I focused on making sure I had ammunition and gas filters, even then it is not necessary to stock that much since a little bit of exploring/scavenging will reward you with sufficient resources, saving you a lot of precious military rounds in the process.

I dunno about that, my first play through I didn't get enough filters at the beginning, to where I actually ended up with about a minute of air left by the time I got to the part where you go outside by the Nazi outpost. Reloading a previous saved game near the last market didn't help because nobody sold air filters.:mad::mad: The game only lets you pick up the 'used' filters off of corpses or the ground when you're already low, so it's not like it lets you stock up on filters this way. I've even had times where I've come across a handful of what appear to be fresh ones with other supply crates that I couldn't pick up due to this.

One thing I noticed was that the limit of filters seemed to vary during the game, during most of it I couldn't carry more then 15 but at one point I put on my mask and saw that I had 20, although it wouldn't let me take anymore until I was down to 14. Also there were times I would be down to 12-14 and still wasn't allowed to pick up anymore filters. Is this normal or was this some sort of glitch? (btw if it matters I got the Steam version in a THQ pack I bought last year.)

As for buying them, I only bought one or two, and that was very early in the game and come to find out I really didn't need to do so, just like I bought the revolver type shotgun in the first station you go to, and then when I lef tthe first area had one laying on the ground free for the taking. lol!

I have to say that I absolutely loved this game. Never had any of the problems mentioned in this thread with filters or ammunition. It's a kind of game that gives you a real sense of short supply and to value and make the most with what little you have. Toward the end though, that concept sorta goes out the window as you tend to be quite well-stocked. Metro made me want to try and give STALKER another chance... gotta grab the mods first. :)

Absolutely loved this game. Originally borrowed my brother's 360 version on a whim, finished it that night as I could not put it down. Absolutely loved the sense of immersion that was created through inventory ineraction, as well as gloomy, despair-filled world. Bought it myself on PC a few months ago and decided to give Ranger Hardcore a go. Needless to say it was one of the most intense gaming experiences I've ever had.

I literally did not buy more than a couple of filters during my entire play-through -- all of my stock was either found from exploring, scavenged from corpses or given to me by NPCs. While I have found gas masks and filters I could not pick up, I have always found enough to get by. However, I am not aware of only being able to pick up filters when you are low.

Normally you are limited to 17 filters; I have never been able to pick more. That's weird you could go up to carrying 20 or be limited to 14 filers but the game is known to have a few glitches regarding the gas mask mechanics so who knows...

The game version does not matter since it is a Steamworks title.

I seem to remember only buying one or two at the very beginning as well, but I think I maybe wasted too much time walking around in the first areas where you go outside. I ended up having difficulty once I got to the section where you go back outside near the Nazi outpost after rescuing the boy and only having a minute of air left. And I'm also the type that kills everyone and checks corpses and every nook and cranny.

Pretty sure I've seen mentioned elsewhere too that the filters you find on corpses are 'used' because picking them up only adds a few minutes of time to your total time, and the game mechanics limit you to picking those up whenever you're at less than 10 minutes of filter left or some such.

Point is though, that a bit of bad luck and maybe some poor time management early in the game can really screw you over later on, because what option do I have at this point but to load a save that's much earlier and buy extra filters at the beginning? I don't recall there being any kind of cheats available to get past this kind of thing.
