Rage sucks

This game still does not run on my system. I am so disappointed by the neglect the PC version got.

I can't even get 5 minutes into the game and it crashes as soon as you pick up the pistol for the first mission.

Just an FYI. Amazon will refund PC orders. I did mine about 10 minutes ago.

While I like Rage so far (actually really do), its a lot like Borderlands (which I LOVED). So lets not claim its new game play. You basically do everyones bidding for them, for weapons and stature. To help save the world of course. Just like borderlands. So many things are similar or exactly the same. Sure Rage was announced first, but Borderlands came out 2 years ago. Yes this has been brought up before, but its true.

Game play is most important, but graphics are too. It is a valid complaint when the game doesnt look like screen shots from years ago, or even games that came out years ago. Not to mention the problems they had the first week it was out with graphical problems like tearing and pop up.

Personally I think most people are upset because most old school gamers had high hopes for this game because id made it. id was an instrumental part of early PC fps gaming (obviously) and they have always been on the forefront of graphics. Their engines the benchmark for graphic cards. Not so much this time. Add to the fact that the PC suffered from being co-developed along side the console, its a bitter pill to swallow. Some people feel betrayed because Carmack and id were founded on PC gaming, and then consoles came along id went with them. I realize its all about the bottom line, but PC gamers (or anyone for that matter) can be a fickle bunch. Im sure down the road they will get higher res textures, or someone will mod it. Bugs will be fixed, etc. Then it will be an excellent game. As it is now, its good, but could have been so much better upon release, imo.

I know some people get emotionally involved with some studios. I understand that as I am also a fan of some games. But games evolve, and change. If you don't evolve with it, then you will automatically give up gaming. As that happened to my older friends.

I'm in the Subway part of the game at present.

Bought the game on release and am taking my time with it.

As I got to this part, the game has really picked up. Ever since the prison break-out this has really been well paced and chock full -o- enemies.

This game is fun, despite it's graphical shortcomings.:D

Wow...........64 pages.......yikes.

Well, I fixed the vsync, but the texture pop in is the worst I have seen in any game to date. It feels like I'm running an old ti4200 card with how slow the textures load and I see it when doing a 180 every couple seconds. If I can fix this I may play through the game, but it still looks like ass unfortunately...

Do you have gpu transcode enabled? If you don't you should, also try lowering your AA to 4x or 8x.

I do have it enabled. The framerate is consistently 60 and up, I meant the texture pop-in is my biggest problem, it's a huge visual detractor. I have all settings maxed and everything is good except for the textures, which nothing will fix right now it seems. Another oddity I encountered is while driving a vehicle, my fps caps at 30 and runs like shit. Getting off the vehicle puts it back to 60 for vsync which is just odd.

I get no texture pop-in / very minimal with my setup. I'm running no config edits, everything maxed except 4x AA. You should use the latest Nvidia BF3 drivers if you don't have them.

It runs perfectly here on i5 2500k and hd 5850. 60fps with 4xaa silky smooth framerates, no texture streaming problems, no flickering, no crashes.

Why does it seem there a quite a few people who have posted in this thread, that do not realize the game lowers the visual quality automatically to maintain 60fps???

Yeah and that sucks, i would prefer a little over 30 but maxed quality and get rid of the stupid texture popping..

Man I love this game, so far up to the bit where I've gone back to Redstone after the Gearhead's power plant mission. So far so good as the story line goes, I've changed my initial score of 5/10 to 7/10 with points deducted for the still present and very little graphics flickering and popping and distorted low quality up close on the textures, but nonetheless, 16x AA, High Anistropy, Vsync'd the wastelands looks very nice and detailed. I don't know why people here are still bitching and not playing the game, I mean ok people get it now that this game is bugged and highly flawed and that I.D fucked up big time but no need to keep bitching for freakin' 65 pages with the exception of those that didn't.

Take your 16AA down to 8AA and see if that looks even a little better to you like it did for me. I'm convinced there is/was some kind of "glitch" there.

Played it more over the weekend. Without to much spoilers, I did start to notice texture popin, even on an SSD, when you had to go back into Ghost Town to retreive the data from the servers. I would be staring at a wall watching stuff draw in. Up to that point though I saw virtually zero draw in, even when I spun 180 very quickly. It wasn't much of a distraction though.

So far though the game is pretty good but the great firefights are few and far between. They made a mistake when they chose to have 60FPS for only 3 enemies on screen at once. Maybe on console for the lack of controls it's OK, but on PC :(

Subway city is a very gorgeous place. Has a very influenced-by-Blade-Runner look to it. I do like the fact that they tried to make places have a look and feel. Although, the textures here and there can be blurry there is some art to it and can be admirable.

Rage is the best game id Software has made.

Got this from Shacknews...more crappy news.

"We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage," Carmack revealed on Twitter. It'll look prettier, you see.

Asked whether id would also be releasing higher-resolution textures, Carmack's reply made it look unlikely.

"Our first test of a higher res page file didn't help much, because most source textures didn't actually have any more detail," he responded.

There's no word yet on when this PC patch will arrive, nor what else might be in it.

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with id over the years. I loved the Doom games, but hated Quake…until GLQuake and a bunch of mods came out and made it awesome.
Quake 2 might be my all-time favorite game they ever made (both SP and MP), but I still hate how they abandoned the horror feel for more of a sci-fi one.
Q3A was okay, but a little boring. I think the problem with id’s shooters is that the popular levels always revolve around a path pattern, while Epic’s levels are more open and hectic as a result.
I hated Doom 3 when it came out and still hate it to this day. Hard shadows and slow repetitious gameplay FTL. The imp was scary the first time you saw him. After sidestepping him for the 80th time behind yet another door, I was ready to quit.
With Rage, as a game, I like it. I enjoy the faster pace of things. Controls are simple and crisp. The human enemies are smarter than in 95% of other shooters. The racing is pretty smooth with a pad, although a little spastic with KB/M. The environs are pretty varied and the color palette looks good. If nothing else, I feel compelled to keep going and I’m having fun. I haven’t been like this with a PC shooter in a while, so there’s something special about it. I’m always curious what’s going to happen next.

I see your quake 3 and raise you a doom

I don't think that's a big deal. The problem isn't low res textures, the problem is we don't see the high res versions of the textures unless the stars align due to their on-the-fly 'optimizations'.

Oh, maybe this was posted elsewhere, but doesn't the whole Authority thing feel a lot like Combine soilders in HL?

Ahhhhh, I now understand what he was stating and your saying... I hope that is the case! :p

No, I'm fairly sure high res textures simply don't exist.

Basically the textures look OK until you get within about 10-15m of them, if you're running through an area indoors quickly you notice it less, but the moment you stop to look at anything close up you immediately see how bad it is.

The strength of the technology is lots of different textures, it's a technology developed to prop up the lack of texture budget for consoles, it's a console game first and foremost remember.

Waiting on my new build to try this game. Hope that you are not right, was really anticipating this game.

It still looks good to me, just not as smooth looking as 16AA does but you can definitely tell some difference.

I don't really think a new build is necessary for this game. An Nvidia GPU capable of enabling GPU Transcoding, a quad core CPU, and an SSD looks to be all you really need to totally enjoy this game.

I don't have a SSD and am more than happy. Good 'ol fashioned WD Black here.
Granted I'd love to have a SSD, but the decent sized ones can break the bank these days.

This game felt like a mash between Fallout and Half Life 2, with an ending as disappointing as Farcry 1. I also find that name "Wasteland" ironic because it is in fact such a waste. All that space and they just have you driving between missions with little to no reason to ever get of of your vehicle and explore. It was also way to easy and not balanced right. I never felt that I was low on ammo or had to be careful how much I used. You can also tell this game was built around the 360. The disc swap in the game is obvious. That's just a fucking disappointment. The game is fun in some parts but overall it's not that great.

This is how I felt. All around the game was a huge letdown in every aspect of it. Graphics, story, combat, missions, and the ending all sucked ass. I'm perplexed when I see some of the people in here talk about the great atmosphere, AI, graphics, and and guns. I stop and wonder if we're playing the same game. There hasn't really been any redeeming qualities about the game.

Given a choice, would you prefer id had delayed the game for more testing, getting the drivers ready and patching it. Or are you happy you get to play it now.

I'm kinda suprised id released it in this state - they certainly could afford to delay it another month easily and still make the holiday season.

That pretty much sums it up for me,as well. It's a complete mystery to me how some people can defend the game, let alone the lengths they'll go to to do it. When you have people actually trying to say it's a better game than STALKER or Metro 2033,it boggles my mind. Has consolization really reduced our standards for what is considered a good game to this?

I had no issues at launch.

I would have them delay the game as it's obvious they needed at least another year to just add more content to the game itself. The shit ending exsists only because they ran out of time IMO.

They'd pretty much have to start from scratch with new/better content IMO... the ideas might've been OK, but they seems to kinda skimp on the overall execution, and a bad ending like this is just an insult to many gamers
