For all the bitching and moaning I thought "here we go, this is gonna be worse than Doom3, which was awful, id can't make a game anymore, guess this is the last hurrah".

Six hours into the game and I've been very entertained so far. Very solid gun play, great monster animation, fun scripting events, amazing visuals. Yes I said it. The textures are ridiculously bad, but I have never seen a game with so much going on in every scene. There is just so much detail stuffed into every town, dead city, etc. I have had a dozen moments where I just stopped to take in and appreciate everything. The architecture is superb. This is the prettiest post-apocalyptic game ever... hell, if they threw some high res textures on stuff it would be the prettiest game ever, period.

It's a damn shame that id stopped 5% away from the finish line and as a result are getting trashed, and may well suffer business changing consequences. If they had only bothered with better textures, released without texture issues, threw in a decent CTF mode or something and paid lip service to PC as a platform instead of dissing it, I think this game would go down as one of the classics.

Man, I got 50 minutes in, stopped playing out of boredom and haven't bothered to play it again since.

I got to the first 'city', forget what it was called... through those gates you had to blow up... stopped playing for the night, and haven't started the game again.

I look at the icon on my desktop every now and then and think "Hey, that might be a good idea" then I see the Excel icon next to it and think "It would be more fun to play with some calculations in Excel!"

Installed game
Started game
'woke up' in game
took random orders for no specific reason in game
repeated same orders from a different person in game
turned off game
uninstalled game.

where are my fucking textures?

Minesweeper had better textures and more engaging gameplay imo.

Up close some of the textures are blurry but they look fantastic if you just take in the picture as a whole. The world has sooo much geometric detail, it almost looks like tessellation everywhere and make you realize unigine heaven demo is pure nonsense. The amazing thing is it runs 60fps constant using only 30% of my 5850.

This game got 7.5 to 8.5 ratings even though it doesn't work well on 1 of the 3 advertised platforms it's made for. That's BullShit. PC gamers got porked for $60 for a POS game. I liked the way it looked in previews & I wanted to buy it, but I'm glad I was busy, I just saved $60. Let me replay 4.5 rated Duke Nukem again, at least that works on the PC.

Fix the texture issue? After the latest Rage patch and the latest AMD drivers I don't know of anyone with issues anymore.

The game itself is in fine shape but there are still some AMD users having driver issues.

Instead of placing blame where it belongs, many are putting it on id software for some idiotic reason. It's also the main reason for all the backlash.

Yeah, after the Rage patch and AMD driver beta v2 the bug have all gone for me, I've fixed all of the other gameplay issues such as mouse acceleration and FOV and the game is actually a lot of fun.

You pick up some really cool weapons and alternate ammo later on, especially for the crossbow. You get mind control arrows which allow you to tag high power enemies like armoured dudes with mini guns and turn them on their friends, you get dynamite bolts which stick to people and they run around in a panic before exploding, electro bolts for frying people in water and stuff like that.

The game itself once it's fixed is actually pretty damn fun IMO, the technical problems are inexcusable, but they're also fixable.

When you get close up to the textures, a great many of them look like 2004 will be calling to get it's textures back. They look great from a distance but when you get close, bleh.

Megatextures!!!

FLCLimax was kind enough to give us a sample of it.

This is the texture issue people are still talking about once the popping/missing issue was fixed via game patch and beta driver release. The only fix for this is serious tessellation, or a texture upgrade. People expected next gen from iD, but they prolly would have excepted current gen. Unfortunately, the game is a mishmash of beautiful current gen, and elements that look like 2004. The difference make them stick out all the more imho.

So now this is the "can I make a more ironic and witty joke than the last guy" forum ?

Really ?

Do you disagree? The gameplay was subpar, the story was meh, the graphics suck, the glitches are unbearable, and the ending was perhaps the biggest let down in...well ever. Please praytell, what redeeming quality about this title that makes it standout?

Except it's not. Personally, I'd call Rage the best FPS in years.

Why? What makes Rage better than say Stalker, Metro 2033, Fallout 3/NV, Deus Ex: HR, Hard Reset, Transformers: WoC and F3ar? All of those games delivered either better graphics, better story, better gameplay, greater replayability or all of the above. While I guess some of those can be due to personal preference I'm still not sure how Rage can even be classified as better as any of the above.

Jesus christ graphics whores.. just play the game and get over the fact that some textures look outdated. It's not that big of a deal.

They will never listen but at least the rest of us can still enjoy the game. ;)

Well, just finished it... Wanted to reserve my opinions until the end and select the right thread to post in. Couldn't post in the love it thread because I didn't love it... Didn't think it sucked, so that one was out. So I landed in the middle.

Loved - atmosphere, artistic direction, sound, controls, weapons, voice-acting, minigames.

Hated - Technical issues on PC, occasional annoying driving issues, the uninspired "open-world" component of it - they could've done much more, and the ending akin to finally getting to third base with a hot chick after a good chase only to find she'd been stuffing her bra the whole time.

Overall, the game IS darn good, but that's it... The most memorable moment for me was the haunting melody in the opening intro, maybe finding the developer room by accident too (which was more of a WTH is this and why did I get cheese for it?).

Should be no spoilers in here... Was it worth 60 bucks? Not sure... Was it worth the 50 bucks I paid with the Amazon credit I got? I think so, given I took my time and played through it over 20 hours, so in terms of entertainment value - it worked.

id punched me in the soul with this game, in a bad way... at least the engine they used has some potential - they need to give it to a shop that really knows how to program for PCs because it's worthless in the hands of one that appears to have forgotten what a keyboard is...

I think that I can safely say that while the game had texture issues, the story (was there a story?) was weak and never present and the ending was a definite letdown I have never had so much fun shooting people in a single player game as I have had in Rage.

Give me Fallout New Vegas for story and RPG elements and the gameplay mechanics and animations from Rage and I'll be a happy camper

Which is what ID is known for - making a good engine with a 'meh' game, then letting other people buy their engines to make great games.

The engine as it stands has a lot of problems, which is why a lot of people are disappointed. Hopefully another studio will come along and use it to make something awesome.

The engine doesn't have a lot of problems, every issue we've seen so far are game specific or driver specific, not engine specific.

Who knows? Rage has good AI, responsive controls and satisfying combat. Top it off with excellent artwork and animation (not to mention solid performance) and I just found it a good overall package. The weaponry alone just makes it fun in a mayhem kind of way.

I haven't played all the games you mention but I found FEAR, Stalker and Metro to have much less satisfying combat. Same goes for Fallout (which isn't strictly an FPS so it's excusable).

The atmosphere in those mentioned games alone, make them twice the game Rage will ever be ;)

To each his own and all that. I found them pretty generic in that regard and I didn't exactly find them atmospheric to the point where it made up for their shortcomings. Rage has character enough and gameplay comes first in my opinion.

Except when the company releasing it hypes it for its "ground breaking texturing system". You would have a solid point if Id really pushed the game play ..but they didn't.

People expect more from Id because its been one of the premiere developers for the PC and is responsible for creating the first person genre. Rage doesn't break any new ground , its game play is recycled heavily and offers a vapid story line. The weapons aren't bad but again offer nothing new.

So if you take away the graphical elements of this release you are left with an average forgettable game. Borderlands is practically the same thing but much better and offers 4 player co-op , at a fraction of the price. If you can't understand why a large amount of people who play Rage are not impressed then you are obviously viewing it from a tainted perspective.

Wait, you're saying rage has more atmosphere than metro 2033 and stalker? Have you even played these games? I understand personal preference but some things aren't debatable and this is one of them.

Technical challenges aside, it's pretty standard fare for a first-person shooter. The gameplay is reasonably engaging, but predictably repetitive. You go from town to town solving people's problems for them, all while vaguely fighting The Man with no real motivation for doing so.

I've been watching the texture pop in videos. I'm a bit nearsighted and have Astigmatism in both eyes so literally this is how I see without my contacts. I don't think I could play a whole game like that. It's too painful. I'm not gonna shit on the OP I was really excited about the game before it came out. Maybe I'll check it out in a few months when everything is fixed.

The game itself is a great shooter. The animations are amazing and the shooting feels really solid. That's about all I expected out of ID. I'm satisfied.

You're absolutely correct, anyone who thinks Rage even compares to those games should just turn over their PC's now. Metro 2033 is one of the very rare examples of a cross platform game whose PC version was actually designed for the PC,not just a rushed console port.
And STALKER:SoC is,quite simply, the best damn FPS ever made.

After playing about 8 hours I'd have to say that it's a way above average first person shooter, as hordaktheman said the game has pretty good AI, tight controls and fun gameplay, the weapons are satisfying to use and the enemies are satisfying to kill, over and over.

It's worth mentioning the environments are also pretty varied and they make some really good places to fight in, with a lot of vertical gameplay often missing from corridor shooters, it's really cool the way the mutants can mantle all around the level and pull off cool moves.

The whole game is just very fun for me, the actual gameplay is very solid.
