iOS 5 Rollout Marred By Issues

That's why I always let the technological fodder go ahead before me to find out all that is wrong with any rollout like this. Thanks of saving me the time guys. Buddy Christ gives you a +1.

I've updated my iPhone4 four times and 2 out of 4 times it had to do a restore because it stopped working.

Ouch. Did you not sync your contacts with windows contacts? Have you done previous backups of your phone? You should be able to re-restore it from an older backup (under the dropdown list). You might need to replace a few of your contacts, but it's better than nothing.

Lesson learned. Do regular backups and make sure to sync your contacts with Windows contacts (you can enable it in itunes)... I can't stress that enough. Losing all of your numbers/emails BLOWS

Apple pretty much trains their users to never be responsible for themselves. It all "just works" because they "think different" and people are surprised they can run into all the same kinds of issues that happen to everyone else despite thinking they were paying more for a higher quality product.

It's all the same crap in the end: An OS on top of an x86 architecture for computers and an OS on top of an ARM architecture for the portable devices.

Apple's gotten too cocky due to their size. Once the egotism sets in, first thing to go is QA.

And yep... this is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps.

Upgraded my 3GS last night with no issues. First try on the download failed but then I tried it again and it took 20mins.

Seems smoother opening and closing apps now. I used to get little delays and pauses when I would close and open apps and that seems to be gone. Moving between pages seems smoother too.

updated to iso5 last night, no problem at all. i really like hte new messaging and photo editing features.

ios4 upgrade didn't go to well for some people and bricked there devices. Thus when i heard this was going to be released i decided i was going to wait about 2 or 3 weeks before getting ios5 to make sure that there wasn't a lot of serious issues. without knowig how many people are just stupid and how many are having real issues i think i'll stick to my plan and just wait

Is anyone really surprised?

iOS 4 screwed everything up as well..

Worked fine for my old 3GS, haven't bothered upgrading the OS this time around, unless they have done something amazing, like when an app is closed, it's actually closed, I don't have to close them one by one.

Bricking is next to impossible on iOS devices. Just need to put them into DFU recovery mode if something goes wrong.

You're safe upgrading to iOS 5... just make sure you do a stand alone backup before you upgrade just to be safe.

I had error 3200 the first time around. Turns out, my USB barcode scanner (I stick iTunes on an old XP machine that handles the odds and ends) wasn't liked by iTunes, lol... anyhow, unplugged that, and everything worked fine :)

iPad 2 at iOS5 :D

It was just a traffic issue that caused the restores to fail a few times in a row.

The sort of people who were feverishly clicking update to get it the instant it arrived are also the sort of people that secretly love having tech dramas to moan about on interweb forums.

I'm sure the vast majority of normal folks won't bump into these issues when they eventually get prompted to update their phone at the next infrequent syncing session.

Mine went relatively smoothly, my apps didn't transfer on the first sync, but did on the second. No data loss. 3GS coming from jailbroken 4.3.3.

My i4 upgraded fine for the most part. There were a few apps that didnt work that I had to re-download. Also is seems I'm missing a few tones that I purchased too.

Couple thoughts...

The dashboard or notification screen that apple calls it is nice but it sucks that you can't customize the location/order of the widgets. Everything is in a predefined order. Also, I wish this notification screen was on the lock screen. So if i had the phone in stand by, turned it on I would see my widgets and notifications.

I have 4 email address configured on mine, its a bummer that you can't figure which of the 4 would pop up on the notification screen. Currently e-mail for all 4 show up, all or nothing Too much activiity so I shut off the feature.

Aside from that the features are definately an improvement.

What a bunch of fucking crApple. They remove multi-touch gestures from the first generation iPad.

Oh no!

I thought losing my contacts was bad...

I lost all my Angry Birds scores!!! I was only missing two stars in AB Rio! This is terrible!

It's okay...it's okay...I get to enjoy it all over again...yes...like playing it again for the first time...GAH!

;)

lol another reason to restore it from a backup (instead of setting it up as a new phone). I lost all of my progress in game dev story not long ago because of that :(

Are you kidding me? They disabled it on the first generation iPad but have them on the iPad2 so that's their real intention. Will not be jailbreaking this until there is an Untethered version.

Yeah, it's on the iPad 2. Honestly though, while it's pretty cool for it's wow factor, I don't find it all that useful.

aside from trying it out a few times, I don't really use it at all (although I'm used to using the standard multi-tasking on my iphone)

It's usefull for me. As long as I don't have more than ~ 5-6 apps open. I do wish my TF101 will get this functionality. It's that useful. It makes multitasking that much better, IMO.

Trust me it's pretty useful rather pressing/double pressing that stupid home button every freaking time for almost everything.

This is why i ALWAYS just do "Download" and not "Download and Install"

Thankfully I had gotten the GM and upgraded just fine.

How do these issues continue to happen when you only have a handful of devices to write for? It's not like Rage that has to support umteenzillion permutations of attached peripherals and configurations.

I've never understood why people update instantly when you know the servers will be slammed.

I always wait 24 hours at least...even with Windows patch days...

I know how frustating it is to try and do an update and get those error messages but lest facing people there is no way in hell that a company can have enough bandwidth to have 250 million user try and doenload and update without problems. As of October 4, 2011 Apple has sold over 250 Million iOS devices, that a lot.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm not going to defend Apple's poor flashing process, because it sucks (especially their secure flashing with handshaking to Apple's big brother servers).

But really, there's huge flipping warning boxes thrown up that say "BACKUP YOUR DEVICE NOW!" so I don't feel bad at all for people who lost data because of this. My mom's update got hosed, and all we did was let it reflash and then restored the backup we made before starting the flash. No big deal.

Yeah if you lost data you are an idiot, it automatically backs your phone up every time you connect it to iTunes.

50+ million users, all likely trying to get it at the same time. that would be tough for anyone.

Eh. Roll it out in increments. Make some partners happy by agreeing to host the update on their servers as well as your own. Don't try to roll out the whole update in one chunk. Break it up in to pieces somehow. Certainly a company whose held as high as apple is can figure these things out.

So apple intentionally release a crappy update so it can then tout about it's great itunes auto backup features and it's great new iCloud service!

I was getting the 3200 error for awhile. Update on my iPad 2 finally took and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

+1, I had friends bitching and moaning about loss of data and that they went in to get the Apple "geniuses" and were told their data was lost. First I laughed then told them what to do to get their restored versions back up and running. Cracks me up that Apple's "geniuses" told a bunch of them they had lost their data forever :D

Went fine on my 4G this morning, though it did take so long that I had to leave home without my phone while it did its thing...

Also, I just spent 20 minutes moving around all of my app icons on the home screen(s) since it messed them all up. I can't imagine a poorer interface! :-S At least I shouldn't have to mess with them again until the 6.0 update.

Regarding the update contents: Meh @ cloud computing, and yay for finally implementing a real reminder list! (For 3 years now I've been living my life off of a note titled "to do", lol)

Friend of mine has problems with SMS after the upgrade.. I keep laughing at her that the iMessage is sabotaging her SMS'.. she can send them but doesn't receive any, the phone keeps saying that her box is full.. lol..
ATT and Apple can't help her and keep sending her back and forth to each other, only resolution they came up with so far is to reset (or reboot, idk) the phone once in a while

Damn, Apple is on a losing streak.

Not sure if I'd say it's a losing streak. But every iOS release definitely seems to have rougher and rougher launches. To be fair to Apple, millions of users all downloading a several hundred megabyte package and trying to authenticate with the handshake servers at once is a HUGE amount of traffic.

If I was them, I'd stage the release by timezone. Start at +0 GMT and roll it over to the next timezone every 12-24 hours.
