Is this free upgrade for all 6.5 phones that you can do Over the Air or something? How does this exactly work? I'm thinking of getting a 6.5 phone and want to know if I can run 7 and/or mango on it.

PS Phone is the LG lg fathom(seems like the best phone I can get under 100 bucks with nice specs).

can't upgrade wm6.5 phones to 7.

it's how windows mobile has always been and I don't see any reason to believe it'll change now (and there's specifications for wm7 phones that wm6.5 phones don't meet).

The only wm6 phone that could be updated to wp7 was the massive hd2, which still is lacking some of the lessor wp7 requirements.

uh no...that was a rumor and faked screenshots
From all mobile phones available on the market at the moment with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.x operating system on board, the high-end HTC HD2 had most chances to enjoy an upgrade to the newly unveiled Windows Phone 7 OS, but it seems that it won't taste the new OS either. According to Natasha Kwan, general manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region, the HTC HD2 doesn't qualify for and upgrade, so those who already own the device should stop hoping.

It is a well-known fact that Microsoft has put in place a series of tight requirements for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series mobile devices, and it seems that this is the main reason for which the upgrade is not possible for existing handsets. In the particular case of HD2, Natasha Kwan said that the phone “doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons,” apcmag reports. HD2 has five buttons on the front, and Windows Phone 7 Series will have only three of them, namely back, home, and search, though other buttons will be included on the side of the devices.

“Because we have very specific requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series the current phones we have right now will not be upgradable,” Kwan continued. This very much narrows the list of handsets that might taste Windows Phone 7 OS down to zero. We already had doubts that any existing device would enjoy the new platform from Microsoft, especially since previous rumors suggested that there might not be compatibility among OSes, and now things seem to have been cleared up.

LOL, now you want to be pedantic.

next time don't respond that a phone can be "upgraded" when you really mean hacked...especially in response to someone specifically asking whether <wp7 devices will have official support receiving wp7.

or do whatever you want, I don't run the forums here but it's funny when you misspeak and then try to get into a pedantic argument over someone else's correct answer.

They're branded windows phone 7 and windows mobile 6.5 because microsoft wanted to establish a void between the two. The developers of Windows Phone 7 were given a blank slate when it came to designing the OS, and thus they chose to cut all ties with windows mobile. So officially, no windows mobile 6.5 phone can or will ever be supported in running Windows Phone 7.

Its going to take a while for mango to settle in. The multi-tasking API's were only released a few months ago, but they should provide a fairly short learning curve to android developers (or at least thats my understanding, having only glanced at them myself).

People won't let that Hd2 die will they? That thing is a hack whore lol

I'm rocking Android on mine!

Once I grab the Amaze 4G, I'm going to give WP7 a shot on the HD2.

Just got my first WP7. Sold my atrix running gingerbread, my wife has an iphone 4 so i'm familiar with those mobile phone OS's. I must say WP7 is pretty damn impressive. Really liking it so far.

Just finished setting up dualboot Mango and Sense 3.5 Gingerbread on my phone. Microsoft did do a good job on Windows Phone 7, but the lack of a complete backup and restore feature is a major letdown.
